Overview:
Supports:
I'm sure I don't have to say it, but I will anyway: this game was only
released in Japan, and is very sought after. It isn't cheap if you can
find it (moreso because of the American release of Ikaruga, which is the
spirtual sequel to Radiant SilverGun, as at the begininning of Ikaruga it says "Project RS2").
The Basics
First of all, all the menus are in English, but all of the story and
dialogue are in Japanaese. What may suprise you is this game is even harder
than Ikaruga on the hard setting. There's even a slightly more complicated
chain system in that you dont absorb bullets in the same way (you can't
absorb all bullets either) and there are three colors instead of two. Chaining
raises the levels of your weapons as well as racking up more points, of
course.
Absorbing bullets is done by using your "sword," which is one of the most
interesting aspects of the game. Absorb enough bullets and you can use a
massive screen-clearing double sword for one shot.
In addition, there are six shot types at your disposal from the very
beginning, all assigned to different buttons or through pressing more than
one button at a time. Of all those, the sword is still the most powerful.
Review:
Graphics
As far as graphics go, this game is as beautiful to behold as Ikaruga, if not
moreso. I can't say how good it looks compared to the arcade version as that
was never released outside of Japan either, though there is some occasional
slow down. The moving pre-rendered backgrounds are some of the best in any
game period. The bosses are always huge and cool looking, as well as being
extremely well animated. (Fighting the final boss stands out the most.)
Audio
The music is classic Treasure and very similar to what you hear in Ikaruga.
Very epic booming music that draws you in. Explosions and other sound
effects sound just as you think they should, and every thing seems very
crisp and clear.
Gameplay
This game is very challenging. If you were to attempt to play Berzerk
blindfolded while at the same time reciting the Chinese alphabet backwards,
RS would still be harder. That may be a bit of a stretch, I'll admit.
However, your ship responds like it should, and it is extremely fun to
play, though frustrating at times. You can't blame it on the game; it's just
that you are not good enough yet. Truly mastering this game is something to
show off to people, even non gamers.
Overall, for shooter fans, I can't reccomend tracking this down enough. This
really isn't something for the casual fan, unless just as a collecters' item.
Then again, give it a chance and it may convert you.
