The PlayStation was released in the mid 90's by Sony, a relative newcomer to the video game market. Questions abound at the time as to whether the new system would have staying power.

After more than 3000 games were released between the 3 major VG regions, those questions were answered, and the foundation was set for Sony to become a major player in the market, with the 5th iteration of the console set for the not-so-distant future.

But what were the best games for the first PlayStation? Time to decide-

Quick reminder for those new to these lists-

1. Make an ordered list of whatever games are your favorites for the system being covered that month.

-Make your list about what games you think are the best that system has to offer, NOT necessarily the most important. (For example, Super Mario Bros. is one of the most influential games in VG history, but not many would call it a better game than SMB3)

-Also, your list needs to be limited to games you have personally played. Don't include a game just because you've heard it's good, include a game because you know it's good.

-For a few of the games, try to include a few thoughts on why that particular game made your list. That way, those not as familiar with the game can see why it's one they should put on their radar.

2. Personal Message EZ Racer with your ordered list.

Just put "Top 20 games for the (whatever system we're covering that month)" in the subject line. Throughout the month, I will be compiling the results, and release a full list based on votes sent in. I will be putting extra weight on games voted for the top of the lists, so please make sure that your games are listed in numeric order. The reasoning behind a private vote is so that each member's vote can be their own, not influenced by what they think others would want.

The voting cutoff each month will be the last day of the month at 11:59 EST.

Please stick to NA and PAL releases, later in the year we'll do some lists for Japan exclusives.

Super NES- http://www.rfgeneration.c...m/index.php?topic=19263.0

Thanks again and looking forward to everyone's thoughts!

Gotta say I'm personally stoked for this list. I remember the first time I turned on the machine and was greeted to its deep bass console intro. Right away, I felt like I was witnessing a 'game changer'

I'll have to participate in this one, as well! I logged A LOT of hours on my PlayStation when I first bought it, and over the years, it has been a mainstay in my gaming.

Think we can only nominate jRPGs in our top 20 this time around?

Hehe, I've already got this list mostly finished.  This was the system I had when I first moved out of my parents house, and must have logged five trillion hours on various games with a jury rigged "surround" setup using a stereo receiver, the headphone jack on my JVC and some wood-grained speakers from the late 70's I found in the trash Smiley.  Extremely nostalgic.  I'm in fo sho.

Definitely in for this one. PS1 is up there with SNES as a system that I've been going out of my way to play the last couple of months in anticipation of this list.

Totally agree. I currently use a PS2 to play PS1 games, but I've considered getting a PS1 just to hear that classic intro.

It would certainly be possible, but I can't neglect all those classic survival-horror titles! Smiley

A top 3 all time system for me.  I've been collecting a lot for this library over the last two years and can't wait to dive into it and make my picks.

My list is going to be mostly jRPGS but I got to save some spots for my survival horror favorites too haha

Are games like Final Fantasy Chronicles/Anthology or Namco Museum eligible for these lists? This is the first console we've covered where there are a significant number of great past games getting rereleased. Should they count?

Just out my initial list together and I was only at 14 games! Was too picky with my selections it seems so I'm going to have a few games on my list that I like, but don't consider essential.

Man, with having almost 200 PS games I knew this would be a hard list to make.  You can only imagine how many Playstation games I've played.  I have 55 games on my list and need to get that list down.

I submitted mine.  I looked over it, but I've had this list together for weeks now, so why bother.  I know what I like on that system.
