Review:

Guitar Hero II is the sequel to a highly addicting and enjoyable game. The original incarnation's game play and atmosphere was highly enjoyable. The original game had a good formula for success, so could its sequel possibly one up its predecessor? The answer is a resounding yes.

Guitar Hero II (GHII), like the original, is music and rhythm game. The player selects a song and difficulty, and then the song plays. As the song plays, fret notes come down a guitar neck on the screen and the player must hold down the correct fret notes and strum at the right time. Seems easy, right? Well, it may be, but likely for most people it will be hard, very hard. Luckily for them, there is a practice mode.

Practice Mode is something that should have existed in the original game, but didn't. Fortunately, Harmonix made a practice mode that should satisfy most people. If a player has a section that he just can't master, then he can select that section in the practice menu. Perhaps he wants to play the section at a slower speed so that he can acclimate himself to the notes. He can do that too. The truth is that practice mode is a sorely needed addition to GHII, and thankfully Harmonix delivered in that department.

Another thing that makes this game better than its predecessor is the improvement of the Hammer On and Pull Off system. A hammer on or pull off basically allows a guitarist to play different notes while only moving frets and not strumming. In the original game, this action was really hard, but in GHII, this action is made simpler, which is good since one has to be able to move rather quickly across frets in this game, and hammer ons and pull offs will all that movement to happen.

Mulitplayer mode in GHII is also vastly approved over the original. There are three multiplayer modes, cooperative, face-off, and pro face-off. In cooperative mode, one player plays the lead part of a song while the other plays the rhythm or bass part of a song. It's a fun time trying to work together to get through the end of the song. The next mode, face-off, has both players playing the lead, but they alternate on and off the part. Such alternation could lead a player to accuse the other of having an easier part. Luckily for those people found with a complainer, there is pro-face off mode, which gets both players playing the exact same parts. Therefore, no one has the 'easier part'. Pro face off mode is a mode that should have been in the original, and thankfully they added it to the sequel.

Guitar Hero II is one of the best music/rhythm games out there, and if you have a PS2, or 360 then I hope that you will check the game out. From all the new features I touched on to features I haven't like new venues, characters and over 55 songs, Guitar Hero II is a game to be checked out.
