Overview:
There are a certain few video game franchises that invoke such emotion in so many people as Zelda. Throughout Nintendo's video game history, there has always been a Zelda game gracing each one of their consoles. The games of the past have caused the games of the present to be held to the highest of video game standards. People expect an experience that is unrivaled in gameplay, graphics and fun, and the Zelda franchise most certainly delivers on those expectations.
To say that A Link to the Past is not awe inspiring would be a big fat lie. Released in 1992, the game still holds a high place in the hearts of many gamers alike. From its myriads of accessories for links, to the more than ample dungeons, and the truly impressive gameplay, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past epitomizes what a great game should be. Many games may try to emulate the series, but only there can be only one Legend of Zelda franchise, and that distinction allows for some world class games.
Review:
Of all of Nintendo's franchises, there arguably two that stand above all others in grandure and stature. The first one is the Mario Universe. Recognized nearly everywhere, that plumber and his cohorts are easily one of the most well known franchises in all of video gaming. The other franchise that stands out above all others is the Zelda universe. In this review we are going to talk about the latter franchise, more specifically looking at one of the most acclaimed games in the franchise, The Lengend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
A Link to the Past starts out like virtually all other Zelda games -- Zelda is captured by Ganon and Link is called to save her. Armed with only a wooden sword, Link sets off on what is arguably one of the most epic journeys in the entire SNES library. Spanning over a huge overworld and a myriad of Dungeons dispersed between a light and dark world, the game will most certainly be giving you hours upon hours of gameplay, and boy, what gameplay it is.
The basic architecture of the gameplay is very similar to the very first Zelda game, seen on the NES. Most enemies are killed through an effective use of the sword and shield. When an enemy sees Link, it begins to charge towards him or attack from long range. That doesn't mean though that the game consists of the player constantly wielding the sword and shield. Rather, over the course of the many dungeons and hidden areas Link is able to obtain many accessories, ranging from his trusty boomerrang to the more than useful hookshot. All of these articles have a role in the progression of the game, and are used to the fullest extent in making the game a better experience.
A Link to the Past also has some extremely memorable boss battles Aside from the final battle with Ganon, there are many awesome boss battles. One of the more enjoyable battles is perhaps the dungeon battle with a wildly rotating snake. In this battle Link must hit the end of the tail of the snake three times, all while at the same time the snake moves faster and faster as Link hits it. Additionally, the edge of the battle arena does not have a wall, so it is possible for Link to be knocked off the arena.
For a game created in 1992, A Link to the Past has some nice graphics, innovative gameplay, and hours upon hours of play time. This game is truly a gem of the SNES library. Many games try to be like it, but there is only one Link to the Past, and boy is it ever so awesome.
