General Submission Questions

Add Title, Add Variation, Add Regional Variation, What does it all mean?

RF Generation allows for titles, variations of a title, and regional variations of a title to be added to the database, but perhaps you would like to know which add script you should use to submit that title you want to add. Let's first talk about the most mysterious script of the bunch, the Submit Regional Variation script. You would think that you would use this script to submit a Japanese Variation of the American Game Elite Beat Agents. Well, you'd actually be incorrect there. See, RF Generation's ID system has what are regions and subregions. The submit regional variation script is used to add a subregional game to the database. For example, if you wanted to add a Canadian Version of an American game in the database, you would use the submit regional variant script. A French Version of a European game would also use this script. If you wanted to add a European Version of an American Game already in the database you would need to use the Add Script, as Europe and America are Regions, not subregions. To see all the regions and their subregions, click this link. If you are submitting a title in a region that has regional variants, make sure that the title's regional variant is not already in the database. A submission will be rejected if submitted incorrectly, and submitting a title as a new title when it should be added as a regional variant will result in a rejection in the interim.

A straight up variation is generally a package or cosmetic variation for an existing entry. Bundles, colors, Greatest Hits, packaging variations, etc all are examples of variations. If you think that your submission could be a variation of another entry, try submitting it as a variation by searching for the main entry in the database. If the main entry is not yet in the database, it will need to be added to the database first. For example, if you want to add the Onyx DS Lite but the original DS Lite is not in the database yet the original DS Lite will need to be added or submitted before the Onyx Lite can be submitted. Never submit a variant as an original title. Kingdom Hearts Greatest Hits Edition should not be added before the original Kingdom Hearts, so keep that in mind. Moral of the story: The basic entry should be added first and foremost, and variants should be added after that. Keep that in mind and your submissions will probably not be rejected.

Last and not least is the Submit a Title script. If you are certain that this is not a variant and this title's regional variant doesn't exist, then select this option.

Tell me about the regions and countries.

We've done away with selection a region, then country. We ask that if you are not sure that a game was released only in a certain country, assume it was released regionwide. An example is if you bought a game in France, but you are not sure that it was only released in France, then select Europe as your Region/Country.

How do I get new regions or countries added?

If a region or country you need is not in the list, talk to an administrator about getting it added to the system. Pending verification, we will add the region to the database.

How do I get a new console added?

Consoles are interesting in that while it may be in the system, it may not be enabled for a region. Just because the Sega Genesis is a selectable console does not mean necessarily that you can add games to the console in any region you want. The console must first be enabled for that region. If it is not enabled and you would like it to be enabled, contact an administrator, who will then verify whether or not the console needs to be added to the region.

What happens though if the console doesn't exist at all? If you find that instance to be the case, contact an administrator, who will then verify whether or not the console needs to be added and if so will add the console to the regions you desire.

Why does the submit script now ask for my forum password?

RF Generation now keeps track of how many major, minor, image, and rejected submissions you make. If you are logged into the site and are submitting something you must provide your forum password so that your stats can be updated. If you do not wish to enter your password, or would not like to update or have submission stats, simply log out.

Hardware Submission Questions

Why is the Manufacturer Field Required?

The thing about hardware is that there can be a lot of the same thing. Many manufacturers make a controller for a console, so we can't just check a title to make sure it isn't already in the database for the region and console. We now need to check to make sure that title does not already exist for a region, console, and manufacturer. This system is used as a check to keep as many duplicate entries out of the database as possible.

Help! It says the title already exists for the console, manufacturer, and region!

This error can mean one of two things. It could mean exactly what it says, the title exists already in the database, and doesn't need to be added again. That is one possibility. The other possibility is that it could need to be submitted as a variation or regional variation. Unfortunately we can't tell you through this FAQ which possibility it is, but a good way to find out is to always search the database for a title before adding it.

If the console is region-free, what region/country should I use for submission?

Even though some consoles have software that is not region protected, publishing rights are still handled on a per country/region basis. You should select the country/region that the publisher has the rights to release in. For example, Limited Run Games do not have exclusive rights to their releases, and use the ESRB rating system for their releases, so they would be classified as North American. If you're in doubt, consult the publishers website for territorial information or what country's ratings system they use.
