Through the years we have seen games come in all sorts of packaging, some pleasant to the eye while others being downright abysmal. This next installment of
The RFG Pulse focuses on the overall appeal of the media's casing - not the performance or content of the format itself.
When thinking about how to cast your vote, consider how well a particular game package would look in your
Room of Doom. Other items to consider are the durability and artwork of the housing for a respective system. I did not include the latest CD or DVD game offerings - they pretty much are all the same (except the
Xbox's distinctive neon green case).
Some of the pictures depicted below are not entirely indicative of the game case - but you get the general idea. This is especially true with the
Panasonic 3DO and the
Neo Geo AES pictures.
Without further adieu, the contenders for the
Best Media Presentation.
Sega Genesis
Excellent design, durability and artwork.

My vote is definitely for the Neo Geo AES carts. Those big bastards are 'da bomb'. I like the Sega CD casings a great deal, followed by those long 3DO boxed games (I have around 90 of them). I did not include the N64 DD game carts since many people would not be familiar with them - but they were cool.

If I had to pick one of those, it'd be the Genesis games, simply because they are so durable. But my favorite box design as far as art design goes, is the N64. I like how the front shows you quickly and easily what the game supports and how many players can play. And the way the ends of the boxes are all similar but different from game to game make them look nice on a shelf.
I always hated the Sega CD cases simply because they crack so easily. PS1 games would be bad too, if they weren't so easily replaced.

The art on the NES boxes are by far the best IMO, but the Genesis gets my vote due to the durability of the boxes.

Definitely the Genesis, had that great artwork matched with durable cases. The Midnight blue of the PS2 cases is nice too and also the DS cases. Many people hate the Sega Master cases, but at least they look matched and consistent on the shelf because they were all the same colour, well at least up here anyway, I believe in the US some SMS games came in coloured cases.

Yeah my copy of Rampage (in a red case) sticks out like sore thumb among my other SMS games.

I love the NES boxes. They really gave the publisher freedom of design.

I'm going with 2600 as my box art of choice. Even though the games were never fairly reprsented, the art used was often very good. Look at the art for games like Yar's Revenge, Defender, and many others. Sure, it had it's lemons. It had Pac-Man which not only sucked as a game but also for the box art. Lots of great stuff was done for other systems but of those listed, I had to go with 2600. Now, if Super Famicom was on that list, I'd have to say it had the best. The box art of Xardian was hands down one of the best.

The design is nice, they're simple boxes and don't break.

I love the way a nice shelf of Sega CD or Saturn games look. The foil on the Working Designs games helps out, too
A close second for me would be the Genesis cases.
Sega really did a nice job of packaging their games.

The AES boxes are cool in my opinion, on par with the Genesis. I just like the idea of cases for cartridges. No more worrying about damaged boxes! Still, I maintain that my favorite overall case format is the Japanese Dreamcast. The orange and white is consistant throughout, yet, the DVD-case games and all the other special editions do require a second section for any DC collection.

I had to go with genny.
It really is a matter of durability for me.
I love the clamshell Unfortunately there are a handful of cardboard genny games :-/
On the whole most systems have some pretty awesome box art. So my decision was easy
