Well, there are plenty of games out there, and by golly, many of them happen to be First Person Shooters. So, yeah, why not go shootin'? Here in Ohio it's deer season, after all. Don't want to shoot deer? Why not try the featured game, Timesplitters? I hear that it is made by the team who is made up of mostly GoldenEye team members. I hear that GoldenEye is apparently a good game, does not make Timesplitters de facto awesome? Don't know, but I bet our reviewer Shimra has a good idea. You should read his thoughts.

So yeah, don't own Timesplitters? Why not drool over our featured image. Someone was cool enough to submit a PAL Timesplitters 2 box front image. If you can't get into the Timesplitters carnage, then perhaps you can drool over that box.

Lastly, BadKarma has our featured collection. He owns Timesplitters. He also has images associated with his collection. By association, he has the featured collection. Congrats!

Stay Tuned to RF Generation, great things will happen once the Site Director's autumn quarter ends on December 7.

Posted under Site News, CD Interactive, Philips, Sony, Nintendo, Promoted Articles

The word "CD-i" often invokes fear in the average classic gamer, and because people fear what they don't understand, they hate. Unfortunately the CD-i is probably the single most hated console there is, unbelievable since very few people have even played one. So the reason I'm writing this is to try to persuade people to judge this console without going with the majority of people and just hating it without giving it a fair chance. To better understand the CD-i it is useful to know its history.

The CD-i came about as a result of joint venture between Sony and Philips to develop a new CD format which would incorporate audio, graphics and text. In 1986 Philips announced the Compact Disc Interactive and the 'Green Book' standard a.k.a CD-i was issued. However it wasn't until 1991 that players were finally released on the consumer market and this is when its downfall started. It was meant to be released in the late 80s because new powerful 32 bit systems such as Amiga CD32, 3DO and Sega Saturn weren't that far away. Unfortunately this was not the only factor going against the CD-i. When released, Philips marketed it as a multimedia device rather than a gaming platform. As a result people didn't even know it was a console, but who could blame when there were titles like Lamb Chop's Sing Along and Bernstein Bears. It wasn't until 1994 when low sales started to affect Philips that they decided to finally market it as a games console. A newly designed model of the CD-i, the 450 which was recognizable as a games console, was sold with a pack-in game "Burn: Cycle" to try boost sales. And in 1996 the system was discontinued from the consumer market, and that is the history of the CD-i in a nutshell.

That doesn't mean that that is all there is to it though. During that time many, many models of the CD-i were released. In fact, I don't think people realize this but the CD-i is undoubtedly the gaming console with more different models and manufacturers then any other! To give you an idea here is a list of all of the consumer models.

Philips CDI 205 - The first model released in Europe in 1992, same as the 910 model.
Philips CDI 210 - Cut down and Cheaper version of the 220 model.
Philips CDI 220 - This is the Best model of the 200 series.
Philips CDI 450 - Marketed as a games console, lacks the features of a regular CD-i.
Philips CDI 470 - A mini hi-fi component type looking model was also a high end CD player.
Philips CDI 490 - An improved version of the previous 470 model, both have integrated DVC.
Philips CDI 740 - Cadillac of CD-i's. A high end CD player, integrated DVC and 2 joystick ports.
Philips CDI 910 - The first model released in the USA in 1991, same as the 205 model.
Philips CDI 310/350/360/370 - Philips' range of portable CD-i players.
Philips FW380i - Mini hi-fi sound system with an integrated CD-i player.
Philips 21TCDi30 - TV set with an integrated CD-i player, also has DVC integrated.

Bang & Olufsen Beocenter A/V - A high quality TV with an integrated CD-i player.
Goldstar GDI 750/1000 - This model is Goldstar's version of Philips' CDI 450 model.
Goldstar GPI 1100/1200 - Goldstar's portable models, the 1100 has no LCD screen.
Grundig CDI 100V/110E - Grundig's own versions of the CDI 220 and 470 models respectively.
Kyocera Pro 1000S - A portable CD-i player sold by a Japanese company.
Memorex CDI 2200 - Tandy released its own version of Philips' CDI 205 model.
NBS Lookman ID - This portable player was based on Goldstar's GPI 1100 model.
Vobis Highscreen - This European model is Vobis' version of Philips' CDI 450.

Phew that is some list! There are 25 different CD-i player models in that list and that is not counting the solely profesional marketed models. The effect the CD interactive had on the games industry is very often underestimated. Remember that Sony jointly developed the Green Book standard with Philips and this was important for Sony as they got invaluable experience. They also got more experience with CD based gaming consoles with developing and marketing its own portable CD-i players. Thanks to Philips, Sony was able to 'get it's feet wet' in the games industry, in fact if it weren't for Philips' CD-i the Playstation might have never even existed. But Sony wasn't the only major player in the video games industry that the CD-i would have an effect on.

Nintendo had signed a deal with Philips to develop a CD-ROM addon for the Super NES, but for one reason or another Nintendo backed out and to compensate Philips allowed it to use characters from their popular franchises - Legend of Zelda and Mario Bros. No one can deny that the video games industry would be very different if the Sony Playstation never existed or if a SNES CD-ROM add on was released.

This week is special for a lot of us.  Families are getting together to remember everything they're thankful for, a good meal, some board games with the cousins, or some good shopping deals.  The anticipation for that turkey to come out of the oven is great.  Well, what better game to feature than Anticipation for the NES?!  I know it's not one of the best NES games (nor is it in the top 100 most likely), but I felt that this was a great time to feature it!  It plays like a board game on your TV.  Read the review for my take.

Our featured image is from Family Feud on the SNES.  As I sit here watching a little TV, I see that Family Feud is on reruns right now.  It's starring that Al guy from Home Improvement.  It's basically the exact same show as 30 years ago.  Pretty amazing that it's still around in a similar form (...please, please return Wheel of Fortune to it's simpler, better days without hundreds of bonuses and crap quick puzzles).

Our featured hardware is the new Nintendo Wii glove from Nintendo themselves.  Maybe the TV market will start to die off since they may not be throwing their WiiMotes mindlessly.  Nevermind...people still will.

The featured collection is from shaggy.  Shaggy works extremely hard to keep his collection clean, organized, and complete.  I think he's slowly compiling a great collection!

Everyone, please have a safe, happy, and wonderful holiday.  Remember everyone that is in your life to allow you to eat that turkey this Thursday.  And when you've eaten your fill, come over to RFG to talk it up!

For his 15th birthday in 2004, Mega Man (or Rockman, if you prefer) recieved the special treatment and had all 8 of his original games bundled up and re-released with some special extras on the Xbox, PS2, and GameCube.  Fortunately (or unfortunately) each version has unique exclusives, making no version inferior to the others (that includes you, GameCube).  If you're a hardcore Mega-Maniac and that still isn't enough, there's always Mega Man X Collection gathering up all the other titles.

Whatever you call him, the blue bomber always delivers the right technique, and should he defeat you... he will assimilate your specialty move into himself, further expanding his arsenal.  Just look at the lineup of bosses little Rockman conquered in Mega Man 2, he means business.

There are few "Mega" things that can rock as hard as Rockman himself, but Sega knew how.  Affectionately called the Mega Drive in Europe and Japan, this 16-bit system ushered Sega into the golden age of gaming in the early 90s; with an edge that showed even mighty Nintendo that the stakes were raised.

Finally, we acknowledge a collector with fairly even-spread numbers for most of his consoles.  All games in silentscythe's collection are childhood favorites, and likely get some play every once in a while.  A healthy helping of RPGs and adventure games always catches my eye, and are a welcome addition to any collection.

That's all for now.  Check out chat tonight, and tune in to channel 3...

All hail our Nipponese Overlords. We know not where we would be if we did not have our PlayStation, Wii, or precious Sega (you know, the good, pre I whore out Sonic sega). We look forward to the day where like in the land of our Overlords, there is a Ramen machine on every street corner. Who needs crack anyways when you have ramen. Today, we celebrate our overlords and their interesting gaming culture.

First off, we have a game to talk about. It's called Radiant Silvergun. It's a shooter. Apparently, it is damn good. I also hear that it was developed by Treasure. I hear that so long as we forget around Wario World, Treasure is a damn good company. Sin and Punishment, Mischief Makers... thank our Overlords for affording us the opportunity to play games by this development house. Next, let's talk about the featured image. Look at it. It has a GUNDAM. Who doesn't like the GUNDAM!? You should be careful of how you answer that, your overlords may come and whisk you into nothingness via this behemoth. Worship our Overlord and their mightly GUNDAMS!

Next, we talk of the past of the company that prints money. You know, Nintendo. There was an add on for their hugely popular and enslaving piece of hardware we affectionately call the SNES stateside, or as they call it in the land of our overlords, the Super Famicom. Check out this add-on. Worship its might.

Lastly, we honor the collector that is truly devoted to our overlords. This one goes out to you, Fuyukaze. Our overlords command for your continued devotion. WORSHIP THEM!

As a friendly reminder, do not forget to thank your overlords for this wonderful day before you fall asleep. You never know when they may be listening.

No one should be forgotten. Such was the statement of the first webmaster of the site, and such is our ideology today. To help people get a grasp of those who contribute to our site, I have made submission stats available to view.  They can be found under the submit menu as Submission Stats. Please note that these stats only are valid back to about November of 2006, when we began logging submissions. I apologize if you made a lot of submissions prior to November of last year. I wish I could say that we have logged your submission, but we just have no feasible way to determine when you made submissions. Your submissions though will always be documented on each game or hardware page.

I hope you enjoy the new toy, and stay tuned... more is to follow when you keep it on channel 3.

This week's features start out with a well made game from the Nintendo Entertainment System library. Bionic Commando is a game that most NES fans have played and enjoyed. It has a neat concept where you cannot jump. Instead, you use your bionic arm (a la Inspector Gadget style) to move from platform to platform. Not only does it help you move, the arm also attacks enemies and grabs items from a distance. Overall, a great game for a cheap price.

The featured image this week is from a system that not many of us bothered with. The Nokia NGage's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Team Stealth Action. The gun on the art is pointed right at your head, or possibly at the head of the guy standing over your left shoulder! Ack!

Our featured hardware is for the Double Player Wireless Head-to-Head System by Acclaim. What does that long title suggest? 2 wireless controllers. I know, not as exciting as the original title, but trust me, these controllers we awesome! Not very many third party controllers can stand up to the original, but these do the trick.

The featured collection is that of justabum's. He has a very impressive NES complete in box collection that looks like it's nearing completion. It must have cost a ton of money, or possibly just great trading. Send him a messege! Maybe he has something you're looking for or maybe you have something that he values.

Well, that's it for this week. It's time for me to get back to work. Until next time, keep it tuned in to channel 3 here at the wonderful, splendiferous RFG.

(The writer of this article takes any and all responsibility for harm that the word 'splendiferous' may have caused to the reader.)

Posted under Site news, Weekly Features, VS Fighting, Capcom, SNK, Capcom vs SNK, SNK vs Capcom, SVC Chaos, Street Figther Anniversary, Slayer1,

In 1999 Capcom and SNK struck up a deal to license each other their intellectual properties to produce two fighting games each.

Capcom's first entry was Capcom vs. SNK for the Dreamcast.  Drawing mainly from their own Street Fighter, and SNK's King of Fighters series, Capcom made a solid 2D fighter with balanced characters and challenging gameplay.  Hypnotic menus draw you in from the start, and animated backgrounds keep you interested through while you fight.  The "groove" system lets you pick how you get to activate power ups and special combos, and the flexible ratio system lets you add a few more characters to your team if they are all weak.

SNK's first attempt is widely overlooked as its release was only for the Neo Geo Pocket Color.  Unfortunately SNK's poor financial standing led to bakruptcy in 2001, followed by a buyout by Playmore that same year.  The new SNK-Playmore followed up on their obligation with SVC Chaos.  This title definitely puts a SNK twist in style, but still feels a bit forced with some unbalanced characters.  The best part by far is how SNK draws characters from more series than Capcom, leading to higher variety of characters.  Also, the artwork from the game is stunning.  Game sprites and special attacks received a visual makeover, while the backgrounds are truly something to look at.

In 2005 Capcom celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Street Fighter series.  The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection hosts a fair selection of SF games on the Xbox and PS2.  Capcom also licenses a number of character-themed collectible control pads to Nubytech to mark the occasion.  The Xbox recieved Akuma, Bison, and Guile while the PS2 recieved Akuma, Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li in addition to wireless control pads featuring Cammy, Evil Ryu, and Sagat.  The premier item released with these was an arcade stick for both Xbox and PS2 that brought the arcade experience home.  Sometimes the standard controller doesn't quite cut it for these arcade style games.

Slayer1 gets the spotlight this week as the featured collection.  The size might be considered average, but a detailed view will show how it truly shines.  Ratings for most titles, and a large number of micro-reviews in the comment section give just enough personal input on games to determine his taste in gaming.

The Game Boy Advance, and more particularly the Game Boy Advance SP, brought me back into the wonderful world of handheld gaming. With great games like Golden Sun and Metroid Zero Mission, the GBA was a leviathan of its time. Today, we celebrate the GBA with this latest round of features. Truly its sales speak volumes about its popularity, and while the DS may be Nintendo's bread and butter now for the longest time the Game Boy line kept Nintendo happily in the black.

So, let's salute the Game Boy Advance. From the featured game of Game and Watch Gallery 4 to the Featured Image of Metroid Zero Mission, we hope that you enjoy the GBA-centric features. Also, we hope that you will check out the featured collection of TH14Arsenal. He may not have the largest collection on the site, but a collection is still a collection, and we look to feature collections ranging from small to large. Thanks for showing off your collection on our site! We appreciate it.

Stay tuned to RF Generation, more is still to follow when you keep it tuned to channel 3.

The Saturn Database is slowly being completed. I am putting all of the UPCs, Part #s, and Ratings in, but we still need scans!!!

Check out the Image database and see what scans are missing. We need just a couple Front and Back Scans, Quite a few Manual scans, and some game scans. Let's get the database finished!!!

With more of the database finished, it will be easier to see if you have that ultra rare Mortal Combat variant that you have been wanting. Finishing the database is all good!!!

Also, site appeal will go up, and more members may actually register! The big collection guys such as izret, tan, and nes_rules have done so many scans its not funny, so even if you can't do scans, try putting in part numbers and such, on any game for any system. Give back to the best gaming site there is, RFGeneration!!!!

Edit: Im soooooo sorry i forgot to put you in there Tan! Lets give him a round of applause!!

Here we have it.  That game of the century!  Well, not quite, but we do have a fairly pleasant little game here to feature.

This game, Dolphin, is a fun concept that uses one of the smartest animals on the planet as it's hero.  Well, he would be a hero if the game actually had a story line.  In Dolphin you are trying to get away from the evil giant squid that is chasing you.  There's even a way to make the chaser become the pursued!  Give the game a shot and then post your high score in our Atari 2600 scoring thread!

Our featured image is for Gopher by US Games.  I've never played this game, but look at the cute little guy eating a carrot.  Precious.  If anything, maybe it'll give you a good laugh thinking about Caddyshack or something.

The featured hardware is the Wico Command Control[Ball] for the Atari 2600.  Ever use this controller?  It was surprisingly easy to use and the metal design of the stick made it very easy to move around.  It almost felt like 360 degree motion.

Lastly, our featured collection is of GagaMan.  Although he doesn't have Atari 2600 things listed, he at least has a great Sega collection kicking.  Check it out!

Well, that's another week of features from us at RFGeneration.  Is there something you'd like to see featured?  Please send me a message, and maybe you'll get to see it up on the front page!  Thanks again for taking a look and remember to keep it tuned in to Channel 3 here at RFG.

Posted under Site News, Weekly Features, Racing, OutRun 2019, R Racing Evolution, PS2, GT3, Gran Turismo 3, Reps911, I WANNA GO FAST

This week we're shifting gears and cutting into the fast lane.

OutRun 2019 takes the lead this week as our featured game.  Easily one of the fastest racing games on the Sega Genesis, it still plays like the other games from the outrun series.  Of course, with these fast speeds come big crashes.  If you like any of the F-Zero or Burnout games, you'ld certainly get some fun out of this one.

The featured image this week is a real bargain bin gem, but don't let the cover fool you.  R: Racing Evolution looks to be another Ridge Racer game as it was made by Namco and features a shiny car and young Japanese female on the cover.  At least thats what I thought when I picked it up.  It turns out to be a racing simulation (that isn't Ridge Racer) with more simplified tuning options and a storyline.  This game features a lot of real cars with upgrade options where all can be obtained in a reasonable time period.  Stock cars, F1, offroad circuit, and drag racing are all represented here.  My favorite cars here are the DeLorean (yeah it was really intended to be a luxury sports car) and the Hummer.  The Xbox version of this game has a special Hummer with an Xbox paint job, adding in a touch of humor due to its ridiculous size, unplayable slow acceleration and speed.  This game is fun to play, and the variety of races keep it fresh.  The other drivers taunts are a little corny though, so try and keep the lead so you don't have to hear them as much.

The Gran Turismo 3 PlayStation 2 console bundle closes the gap for hardware.  The Gran Turismo series has always been the leading car simulation with high attention to detail and realism.  GT3 also helped give the early PS2 the big push for which Sony was hoping, contributing to the largest juggernaut in gaming history.   While there are millions and millions of PS2s out there, this bundle proves to have some collector's value as its the only real box variant or bundle for the early model PlayStation 2.

Speeding his way to higher collection numbers is Reps911.  He claims to have rekindled his collection habit after meeting his (approving) significant other.  Over the past couple years he's shown a fast accumulation of games and systems, and shows no signs of slowing down.

So next time you're rounding the  channel circuit, don't forget to stop by channel 3.

RF Generation is a community of gamers, collectors, and generally good people that make this place truly special. With this site though there are costs associated with it, whether it is domain registration fees, server costs, contingency budgets, or contests. Well, these costs add up, and for poor college kids such as myself it is a cost that we would love to be shared amongst the community. As such, today we start the 2007 "keep the site running" donation drive.

Any donation made during this drive will be used solely for server costs and contingencies. Over the past year, we've seen readership grow immensely, and we want to make sure that we have the funds available to ensure that the server and site are always running properly. With your help, we'll have the funds to keep the site going for another year. This year, we are looking for a goal of $500 to be raised.

The question then arises - what is the incentive for donating? Well, don't you love the site? Wouldn't you hate it if it disappeared? Well, while the site will never disappear, you certainly would make the poor college kids (and Scott) happy if you helped defray the costs of running the site.  Additionally, there are perks. Anyone who donates money this year will get to be given donor status, which let's everyone know that they helped to keep the site running. Additionally, we have something new this year for donors - freebies! If you donate $20, you will get RF Generation Logo Magnet, and if you donate $50, a cool RF Generation ringer T is yours to keep! That's our way of saying thanks for donating! Please note that to get your shirt or magnet you will have to provide an address to us via PM, and while we're pretty sure we can deliver our merchandise anywhere, we can't guarantee it. If we find out that you live somewhere where we can't deliver the shirt we'll make every effort to make things right, including having the shirt delivered to our house and then out via UPS, DHL, or Fed-ex rather than having it shipped directly from the manufacturer.

To donate, click the donate button located in the navigation area of our forum, or click here. We certainly appreciate any donation that is made, and with your help, we'll reach our goal. Thank you!
