You know what? Five years on April 28 we came into being. Five years ago seems like such a long time ago, but it's true. We're really five years old. Are we getting up in age? You tell me.

A lot has changed in those five years, lots for the good, and some for the not so good. Whatever the ups and downs though, the truth is that we're still here and we're still going strong, thanks to people like you. Without you guys we'd be nothing, and for that we're truly grateful.

You know, with our birthday we like to do contests. This year is no different. As for what the contest is... why, it's the PAIN YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS AGAIN CONTEST. We're evil, we really are, and we like to see you work for your spoils. Want to play? Here are the rules:

Submissions, they make the site go round. We just don’t grow if we do not have anyone submit stuff. Funny how that works, and well, we do have one heck of a community that loves to do submissions. Perhaps, with this contest, you’ll be interested in doing submissions as well. Submissions will garner you points, and these how are they are ranked:

   Title Addition: 4 Points
   Variation Addition: 4 Points
   Page Edit*: 2 Points
   Review*: 30 Points
   Overview*: 10 Points
   Image Upload: 15 Points
   Submission Review**: 1 Point
   Blog Post*: 30 Points
   Blog Comment: 1 Point
   Forum Post: 1 Point
   Forum Karma: See Explanation

*Regarding the asterisk: For page edits, it is noticed that you are consistently only adding one field per edit multiple times for a single ID just to up your points, you will be disqualified. Any review or overview completed will count as a page edit as well the points for an overview or review. To get the points for an overview or review you MUST contact me via Personal Message so that I can keep a tally. In addition, the review or overview must be on the actual game / hardware page. A review or overview of poor quality could result in less points than stated being granted. The same statement holds true for blog posts.

Because we want the forum to be a lively place of fun and interesting posts, we're enabling Karma during this contest. Karma rewards members that make good posts and smites those who do not. Your Karma will play a wildcard role in posts. Positive Karma at the end of the contest will increase your point total by a factor, while negative karma will decrease it. The equation used to decide how karma affects your points will be announced at a later date before the end of the contest.

As with any contest, there is fine print. Any submission that you make must adhere to the RF Generation guidelines / policies. We wrote these policies and guidelines for a reason, and well, we’d like everyone to adhere to them. Failure to adhere to the guidelines could result in a disqualification.

Any point reduction or disqualification can be contested. In the event that you wish to contest, you must explain why the reduction or disqualification is unfair. If you win the contest, we’ll restore your greatness, but if you lose, you shall be pelted with figurative rocks and garbage.

**KICKER!  Everyone, except for the directors of this site, is in this contest. There is a catch though for staff members… their final score will be halved. So, that should lead to a lively competition. I think halving their scores is fair, and I hope you do as well. Oh yeah, there is that 1 point for a submission review, that unfortunately only applies to staff members because they are the poor souls who must review your submissions.

What do you win? Well, we’re a poor bunch here at RF Generation, especially since we're on a dedicated box, but we've got a lovely prize for the top winner:

Gaming swag not to exceed $60 and an RF Generation Ringer T.

Also, anyone in the top 5% of points gainers shall get some sort of recognition, to be determined later.

So, won't you get started? The contest starts as of 20 hours ago (midnight last night). When does it end? It ends at MIDNIGHT, JUNE 8th, 2009. (Sunday 12:00AM) So, what are you waiting for? Have your cake and eat it too! Good luck!

YAY! It's on, all, it's on!

Woo! On like DONKEY KONG!

Sweet, this was a blast last year, now I get to do it as a staff member. Fortunately for me, this year, I won't have school during the contest, so I'll be able to devote more time for the contest than I could last year. Although, I still don't have anything to scan right now, so I better find some new games quickly.

30 points for starting a blog topic? That's so much more than any other thing on there and it's way easier than finding games not in the database and whatnot.

Sweet but booo! I just uploaded like over 300 images in the past month lol oh the points the points I say!

Ah, I was wondering why the karma aspect had returned to the forum, and here it is.

Happy Birthday RFGen! So.... do I get 30 points for my blog post about Heart-kun? He's adorable. ^_^

I don't understand this.....I thought the karma thing would be regulated by the staff yet I noticed I can click on applaud and smite for everyone else. So I figured it some kind of voting deal and decided to click applaud on everyone who replied to my "favorite spaceship shooter" thread. I saw how everyone got 1 karma added to their totals and that's cool because I feel like I'm being a real nice guy and gave props where appropriate. Problem is I see my total is at -1 so apparently only one person decided to smite, but what for? I've read and re-read the announcement but I must be pretty dim to figure this out...help?

Happy b-day to rfg Smiley

Do i count as staff even though i don't have the ability to review DB additions? If so that gives me a distinct disadvantage. Submit 2x as much as a regular member and have to beat full staffers who can approve all member submissions.

aargh! Last sentence should read "....pretty dim to NOT figure this out..."

If someone read one of your many posts where your not being a nice guy you were probably smited.
Or someone you have argued with smote you just because.
Ganon must have been at negative 1000000000 last year because of smites.

Basically the karma is if you like what someone has posted you give them good karma. If you think the person is an idiot, asshole, troll, waste of life, and/or any combination of those things and/or other reaons you can smite them.

ALL MIGHTY SMITER!!!

Much like last year, I'm going to publicly bow out of the competition and continue fulfilling the obligations of staff as usual.  Besides, all I realy want is a t-shirt anyways.

I'm wondering, is it too soon to start placing bets on who gets smited the most or is that considered tacky?

Oh yeah, happy 5th RF Gen.

And thanks for the karma point froggin ashbowl. Smiley

I gave Crabmaster2000 a point, I will disperse points to members

5 Years... Seems like it was yesterday when I was pulled over here by Scott.

Happy birthday, RF Generation!

A contest like this is always fun, but I won't be participating all that much. If only I had more games...I can't just start making up submissions, you know. Wink

Also, I have exams during this period, so boohoo for me! (Maybe an idea for next year: don't start the contest until July (aka the Summer vacation))

@captain_nintendo: You mean it wasn't? I thought the member 85 thing was just a damn dirty lie. Tongue

@Sirgin: If it started in July, it would kind of defeat the purpose of it being for the celebration of the birthday of the site Tongue
Didn't the contest end on the site's birthday last year instead of beginning on it? I seem to remember being in school during the contest.

@NES_Rules: XD

@NES_Rules: The start and end dates for this contest are deliberately picked. Not going to change, sorry.

If only Regal_Sin was still here.  He'd easily have - 9 kajillion haha

Think of the start date as the day the site was conceived(eeewwwww) and the end date the actual birthday Wink

I don't know why, but lately I've felt compelled to become more active/contribute more. This contest couldn't have started at a better time.

Though I am sure I won't have near enough points to win, it really sounds like fun. Out of curiosity, is there any place where we can see our current score tally? It'd be cool to know just how much we are actually contributing to the site during the competition.

I remember when I was five.

I am really busy at work (have been for the past 3 year LOL), but maybe I'll pull out some of that old submission magic...

Wow rock on guys. I can't believe how well this site is still doing after all these years.

I know someone who would be very proud of his friends who continue to run the fantastic site he wanted this to be.

Kudos.

I'll second NESJunkie's comment -- Mike would be proud.  Thanks, guys!

It's on like an on switch stuck at on!

@y2richie: You got that right, I think I might have gotten addicted to submitting. Somehow I blame this on Dave.

@Lios: haha nice one. It is fun and a great way to improve the site. Smiley Cheers!

@Lios: Are you using an emulator to make your screenies? I am using my PS2 hooked up to my PC right now and some video capture software. I am going to have to figure out the best way to screen capture my console games that are non SCART cable based so that I can get a good resolution size on each grab. I'm not sure how this is best worked out just yet but might search for a cable that will work between RF and SCART/RGB if there is such a thing.

@y2richie: Emulators, for sure. For the older stuff they are perfect for getting a few screenshots, and they are going to be the best quality you are going to get for the old stuff.

Newer stuff, as you probably know by now, is a lot trickier. Mainly because you need to use a capture card to get any decent quality shots.

If your system outputs RGB externally, you can make your own custom rgb cable to work with scart, or if you are like me and live in the US, run the rgb into a RGB to component video encoder.

@Lios: Ok thanks for the info on RGB/SCART etc. I'm confident that I will find a way of getting decent screenshots for my older consoles. I will die trying, hehe. Anything to complete the images in my collection and have it looking good. I will use emulators if I have to but would prefer to use the original consoles if I can to create screenshots as per the image FAQ guidelines. I am planning on being on the road for the next few years and may have to keep my collection in storage. It's mostly in storage now which is a shame. So my goal is to come here and be able to view my stuff wherever I may roam. Smiley
