It's been a while since I played any Genesis, but I recently got a Mega SD flash cart, which has opened the library up to me considerably. The past weekend I sat down with the intention of trying out a bunch of games for a few minutes each. When I started up Shinobi 3 though, I found myself unable to put it down and played through the whole thing. Here's what I thought of it.
Excellent review! Shinobi 3 is one of those games I discovered as a young adult, when I began buying more games as I had spending money. When I got a Sega Nomad, and then ended up in a job working 3rd shift, I took the Nomad with me, and played many hours of Shinobi 3 (among other games) during downtime. I was stoked when Data Discs announced the vinyl treatment of the soundtrack. I know everyone loves Yuzo Koshiro's soundtrack in Revenge of Shinobi, and it's great, but despite him not being involved with the sequel, Sega really knocked it out of the park, and I think it's awesome. The dive kick move is super satisfying to use, and one of the things I like most about the game. It always makes me feel more like I'm controlling a ninja, versus just shuriken and sword slashes. I've still never managed to beat the game, but I always have fun when I go back to it.
@Pam: Yes! Dive kicking on the hoverboard is very satisfying, and a necessary tactic to use against that level's boss.
