When the new DOOM was revealed at E3 last year, I was not remotely interested in playing it. It looked like just another first-person shooter that seemed to be gory for no good reason. I had limited experience with the original games - I'm more of the Wolfenstein girl - so the nostalgia factor wasn't even there. Pass.
However...
Once the game released and rave reviews started coming out, I thought maybe it would be worth a look. Boy, am I glad I gave it a chance. DOOM is some of the most fun I've had with a game in a long time. The pace is relentless, the combat is satisfying, and the level design is fantastic! By going back to basics and skipping mechanics like cover, regenerating health, and having to reload your gun, id Software produced a game that feels fresh.
I was really excited to make this review and found myself writing it in my head as I played the game. Give it a watch if you want to hear some more about DOOM.
Great review. I was shocked and delighted at how fantastic this game ended up being. It keeps the perfect amount of feel and features from the old Doom and is smart about the new things it brings to the game in ways that don't betray what was so awesome about the original. And the references to the old games are well done too. Between this and the excellent Wolfenstein: The New Order I'm excited to see what they do with the new Quake.
Never was a big Doom guy, but really got into Quake II back when it came out. This game looks pretty neat and some of the combat tactics (especially the health regeneration) remind me a bit of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, which we played through last year. Great review Pam!
I ignored this game based on the feelings that Doom 3 was not a "real" Doom game, and thus, this isn't either. But you are not the second person I've heard praise the fun level of this game, so looks like I'll be picking this up in the near future.
I watched this video when I first saw it on your channel, and I must say, it looks pretty cool. Too bad my 7-year-old PC probably won't run this, and I have no plans to buy a PS4 or Xbone anytime soon. Still, one to keep on my "to buy" list once I do. I did enjoy your take on it.
@zophar53: I love both the new Doom and Wolfenstein. I'm not sure about Quake though, as it seem like multiplayer only? Or competitive only, at least? I usually shy away from things without a single player campaign.
