Hello again, everyone!

I alluded to some major changes in the RFG Thanks for November 2012, and for the past couple months, there have been a huge chunk of changes from our DB Staff. Many of these changes have been Game Additions from our own Paully, but a large chunk of changes have been a direct result of our new European regional guidelines with the help of Paully, Sirgin, Bildtstar and myself.

Early in RFGeneration's history, games were added based on the supported region - North America (NTSC/U), Europe (PAL), and Japan (NTSC/J). The staff realized that this limited scope would not suffice, and added support for country-specific releases. When this support was added, however, there was only limited knowledge on the country-specific releases in Europe.

Fast forward to this year and a major project that I started working on came to fruition - resolving our Europe (Regionwide) variants for Sony PlayStation 2. Sony did many things right with their software releases in Europe for Sony PlayStation 1 and Sony PlayStation 2, including even having language flags on their box art!

Instead of attempting to find the retail regions for many of our database entries, I instead resolved to utilizing the supported languages and utilizing the major countries that supported that language, which incidentally was Sony's method as well. This method works for a large majority of the titles in our database, so we've decided to move in that direction for our European releases.

While this does not remove Europe (Regionwide) in its entirety for software, especially for older releases, it does give our database the granularity it needs to track the current generation of consoles.

A new Region Submission Guidelines policy is being drafted to address the new requirements. In the interim, until this is published, please audit your collections appropriately and submit any new Variants to the database. If you own a copy of a game and it's missing information or is set to Europe (Regionwide), please submit any information you can so that we can remove the ambiguity from the entry. The best way to determine if you have a Regional Variation are the EAN/UPC and languages on the back of the box. Scans are also extremely helpful in this regard, and are always appreciated!

Unfortunately, this means many of our European collectors will suddenly have titles they don't own due to the regional changes. This is an unfortunate side-effect of our changes, but the Europe (Regionwide) entries were incorrect to begin with. This means that you will need to adjust your collections to match what you own. Taking a pro-active approach during this transition will ease any auditing needed for your collection, so please get those entries/information in to prevent any unwanted changes to your collection at a later point.

So far, I have completed changes to Europe (Regionwide) regions for Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox - there should be no further edits to these besides new additions. Sony PlayStation 1 is next up on the list (thanks Sirgin), and Sony PlayStation Portable is in Paully's hands. We will be going through most of the major consoles for the 5th-7th generation of consoles and making changes where appropriate, so please bear with us while we transition over to our new policies.

If you have any questions dealing with this change, including help with submissions, please bring them up on our Announcements/Feedback thread.

Well said, Shadow.

This is definitely the right way to move forward on the Euro DB.

sounds like a ton of work, thanks to all the staff who are putting time into this project. anytime the database because less vague and more accurate, the better it will be for everyone.

So it's ok to romve belgium for all french/dutch releases?, can make a start with my own collection

@sharp:
It's okay to remove Belgium from these, though I would caution on doing so until you verify that there is no Belgian packaging. We've noticed from some of our Dutch image submissions that there are .be web addresses on packaging, which indicates that the title is supported in Belgium. While it's hard to accurately track this without scans, it's nice to have confirmation that Belgium was intended for support for the title.

I only do it for the games with the fah code for nintendo, which have only french and dutch manual.
