Welcome to another Random List, now it's no secret that I'm a big fan of video game music, some of my favorite composers include Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu, and Motoi Sakuraba. Today's list is a compilation of some of my favorite updates to songs from games of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, I'm sure many of you probably remember hearing many of these songs at some point, as for me many of these songs are nostalgic due to my being young when playing many of these games for the first time. My only real restriction for this list is the the updated song has to be from a game, so no fan made stuff on this list, and all of the songs will be presented within for your listening pleasure. Anyway, without further ado, here are some of my favorite updated video game songs...
Overworld 2 (Super Mario Bros. 3)
The first time you hear this theme is in world 1-2 of Super Mario Bros. 3, the original game's music was composed by Koji Kondo, this updated version of the song comes from Super Mario Galaxy, the soundtrack for Galaxy was handled by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo.
Vampire Killer (Castlevania)
The first stage theme from the original Castlevania, it has been used several times in various Castlevania game, with the most recent version being from Castlevania Judgment. The original 8-bit game was composed by Kinuyo Yamashita, this updated version was used as Simon Belmont's Theme in Castlevania Judgment, however, I was unable to find the name of the composers for Judgment at the time I was writing this article.
The Decisive Battle (Final Fantasy VI)
This song is the boss battle theme from one of my favorite video games, Final Fantasy VI, and was originally handled by one of my favorite composers, Nobuo Uematsu. This updated version of the song comes from Dissidia Final Fantasy, this game's music was composed by Takeharu Ishimoto.
Boomerang Kuwanger (Mega Man X)
In my opinion this is one of the more underrated songs from the Mega Man series, anyway, the original is from the SNES Mega Man X, which was composed by Setsuo Yamamoto, Makoto Tomozawa, Yuki Iwai, Yuko Takehara, and Toshihiko Horiyama. This updated version is from Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, the remake of the original Mega Man X, with the music again handled by the original composers.
Ice Man (Mega Man)
My favorite of the remixes from the original Mega Man, the original game's music was composed by Manami Matsumae and Yoshihiro Sakaguchi. This version of the song is from the Playstation Portable remake, Mega Man Powered Up, which was composed by Shihiko Horiyama.
Pokemon Trainer Battle (Pokemon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow)
This is an updated version of the trainer battle theme from the first generation Pokemon games, this theme was originally composed for the Gameboy version by Junichi Masuda, this updated version is from Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Gamecube, though I wasn't able to find out who handled the arranged version.
Gourmet Race (Kirby Super Star)
Originally from the Gourmet Race game from Kirby Superstar, and composed by Koji Kondo, this arranged version was done for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and was arranged by another of my favorite composers, Motoi Sakuraba.
Well, that about does it for this list. Thanks for taking the time to look over this, if the response from this is good I may do another music list like this in the future. As I write this I am also working on another article that should be up early next week. Take it easy guys, and I hope you enjoy the music.

@logical123: This. Great list though. And you should check out the Portrait of Ruin remake of Iron Blue Intention. Probably my favorite Castlevania remake along with Dawn of Sorrow's Bloody Tears.
|
@logical123: Yes. fixed it.
Nice list, I love the Kirby Super Star remix and the Boomer Kuwanger remix. Those are really good.
|
@TraderJake: Awesome! I love the Trainer, Kirby, and Mario remixes the best. Nice list!
|
Hells ya! The Decisive Battle rocks!
|
How about ANYTHING from Bionic Commando: Rearmed?
|
@Tondog: Actually, I've never played the original or Rearmed, otherwise something from those games would've likely been on there, since Capcom had some great music back in the 8-bit era. Honestly, I'd like to do another list like this, since there are more songs I'd like to mention, but I'd also like to do some lists looking at some of the old 8 and 16-bit era music.
|
Nice list!
I like the version posted by TJ some time ago of that Kirby song better though...this one is too much rock.
|
no one could get more music into an 8-bit cartridge like Konami could
