In order to spice things up a little for summer, the playthrough teams have decided to switch hosting roles for the next two months and host games for their counterparts. This month GrayGhost81 will turn the wheel of time back a little further and host the Retro Playthrough, and I (singlebanana) will try my hand at hosting a more modern game (though of course, not TOO modern Wink ).  For June, we have picked two very exciting and revered titles on the Playstation and Playstation 2. So without further adieu, here are your playthrough titles for June:

This month, play as the son of famous general Teo McDeol,  and lead a ragtag rebel army against the evil empire in the original Suikoden on the Sony Playstation. Travel across a vast land while trying to recruit the 108 Stars of Destiny to your cause. Experience one of the deepest stories and meet some of the most interesting characters in video game history. What looks like a traditional turn-based JRPG at first is sure to surprise you with its depth and sweeping scope. So please, join us in playing Suikoden for the June retro playthrough. Suikoden is available on the PSX, as well as the PSN.

In June's modern playthrough, you (Wander) make a deal with a mysterious being, known as Dormin, to travel across vast lands to slay 16 colossal monstrosities in hopes of resurrecting a deceased lady named Mono. Armed with only a legendary sword and your trusty bow, you must scale these giants and exploit their weaknesses to bring them crashing to their knees.....or wings, as the case may be. Shadow of the Colossus is not your typical action/adventure game, but also has strong puzzle elements. Each colossi requires a different strategy and means to defeat it; often times, you have to exploit parts of the environment to earn a victory. What fate befalls our hero after slaying all 16 colossi? Join us and find out. Shadow of the Colossus is available on the PS2 and on the PS3 as a combo pack with Ico.

We are very excited about this month's choices and hope that many of you will join in!

wouldn't Shadow of the Colossus be retro by now ?

So excited.  I've played through Shadow several times already but I'm always willing to go through it again.

Shadow of the Colossus... just went to Video Games Live a week ago and experienced the music and beauty of the game. It's a fantastic experience.

For those that usually double dip on these playthroughs, I suspect you'll have to focus on one this month. For Shadow of the Colossus, I suspect many may want to play it on the PS3 to reduce problems with framerate, but I don't know if there are any differences between the versions.

douglie, PS2 isn't officially sunset yet, so it's still not retro even though it's 10+ years old. Wink

If anyone wants to play SotC, I have an extra ps2 copy, PM me and just pay shipping.  2 conditions, you have to play in the playthrough and participate in the discussion and you have to pay the game forward when you are done with it.

@Shadow Kisuragi: I have to respectfully disagree and encourage people to sign up for both playthroughs.  Suikoden is as long as you make it and SOTC can clock in at under ten hours.

My advice for those playing SOTC for the first time: set aside two hours for each colossus. Most don't take nearly that long, but if you get a little lost finding one or figuring out what to do or you just have trouble getting to that weak spot, the battles can take a while.

Yeah, I agree with GrayGhost. SotC is typically a shorter game, figuring out the puzzles can take a little time though. I think Suikoden is very doable in terms of double dipping. Just take breaks to slay some giants. Smiley

I've seen people take 20 hours on SotC because of being lost on what to do with some of the colossi, and Suikoden games always take me A TON of time because I invest into completing all the sidequests. It was just a warning, since Suikoden games take a bit of time... but then again, I played Suikoden III and IV, not I!

I have an extra PS2 copy as well that I was going to offer - it's a mismatched copy, so I was planning on selling it anyways, but if anyone wants it let me know.

Thanks for the game offers guys. Please also throw those offers on the game threads. I think Disposed Hero mentioned that he has an extra copy of Suikoden he would sell.

man that is tuff: both games i have heard and read a lot about. since i actually play South Park, i will go with SotC for more action, than playing another RPG for now.

@Shadow Kisuragi: I know I saw some Soccer titles released on the PS2 last year like FIFA 14, but they must be officially done releasing PS2 titles by now...right?
