Where does your screen name come from?

Was the name of an appliance a guy made up in an old blog I used to enjoy when I was in junior high school. Thought it was amusing and started using it at my username on pretty much everything from 1998 onward.

How did you find RFG?

Lucky Internet searching when getting more into collecting and looking for people that could answer questions I had.

What made you stay and become part of RFG?

Did a trade to get some cords to complete a few systems I found at garage sales and sold a few items. That's the first online transactions I had done outside of eBay purchases. Was such a cool experience that I keep doing it to this day!

Have you ever met or personally know anyone at RFG?

Lucky to have met several!!

Fleach has made the trek across country and stayed in my home for a few days.

In 2015, I had one of the greatest trips of my life and got to meet many members. Flew to Indiana and stayed with Dr. Duke.Togo for a couple days before we went on an epic gaming road trip over to WildBil52's home/game convention. Got the chance to meet and game with Bil, Izret, Bickman, Ericeskapade, Singlebanana, Russlyman and got a second dose of Fleach. This was one of my favorite trips of my entire life. Had such a great time and felt likebt I've known these guys for years. We really had a blast and just laughed and gamed for days. Really hope I get the opportunity to do it again this year.

EngineerMike and Charizard01 also live local to me so I get the pleasure of interacting with those dudes quite often.

Frostbite (which I mistakenly had been calling Iceberg for decades until Rich corrected me one day and sent me a copy)

What was your first game you bought yourself?,

Saved up many allowances and read about it diligently before deciding my first game purchase should be Kirby's Dream Course for the SNES. Remember being super disappointed that as soon as I got home and excited to play my new purchase my dad told me we were going camping that night. I packed the instruction manual with my camping stuff and read it ragged over the weekend. Still hate camping to this day.

What made you decide to buy that particular game?

Hours of combing through Nintendo Power mags and previously enjoying other Kirby games.

First game you ever beat?

Super Mario Bros (NES) At least once a year my family argues at dinner over who accomplished this first. I still swear it was me...

Have you ever broken anything due to frustration from a game? Be honest, we won't tell...

Got a little to aggressive pulling a stuck PS2 disc tray out that ended up wrecking the system once.

Are you collecting now, if so what anything specific?

Always in collecting mode. Currently close to finishing Virtual Boy, Dreamcast and Turbografx-16 libraries and closing in on SNES. Plugging away at getting a copy of every Mega Man game and Atlus release. Other than those just looking for games for any system that I think I'd enjoy or that are collectible.

When did you feel a tipping point from gamer to both gamer and game collector?

When I realized that I was a collector by accident. Just by keeping games I loved and never trading them in I had a library of about 200 games growing up. Didn't realize that was unusual until I moved out from my parents with a couple friends who kept around 10 games in their libraries. Once I found communities like RFGen and Nintendoage it just got worse in the best kind of way.

What are your goals as a game collector, how have you developed them, and how do you feel about your progress toward them?

Collecting full libraries or subsets is a lot of fun. Gives the collecting a purpose and keeps it enjoyable for me since I don't get the chance as often these days to scour thrifts and garage sales like I used to. Used to just find whatever was local, but now I find myself trading and buying online a lot more to find titles that have evaded me for years.

How many games, systems, etc. are "enough"?

I'm actually nearly where I want to be for consoles. Only 2 I'm missing that I would like are the Jaguar CD and Neo Geo CD then just keeping up with new consoles. If a system has at least 3 games I want to play on it that I cant get elsewhere I consider it a must have for the collection.

As for games I'm sure there is a point of stopping. There are just too many interesting releases to ever get close to it though.

What's your proudest moment as a game collector?

Getting my final NES game as a gift from the generous and amazing RFGen community. Not wanting to simply buy my final game online I was content to wait it out until I had the chance to buy it locally. Much to my surprise EngineerMike showed up one day with a gift wrapped package for me. Inside was a copy of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusaders along with a note signed by all the members who had chipped in to get the game for me.

Was really an amazing moment.

To make the game even more prominent in my collection I had Dicky Beer, the stuntman from the movie, sign my copy as well last year at a local fan convention.

What's your least proud moment as a game collector?

I feel like I conduct myself in a reasonable and trustworthy manner both in life and collecting. Don't have any moments I feel ashamed of.

If you had to give part of your collection away for a worthy cause what part would it be, and why?

If one of my kids got very sick, I wouldn't hesitate to unload some expensive parts of my collection to assist with expenses. I can always obtain another copy of a game. Can't make any more children Wink

Where/how do you store it all?

Been fortunate enough to have a wife who allows me to keep one room in our home as a dedicated game room. We just moved to a new place a few months ago and I have ambitious ideas for the new game room so it's still under construction, but when it's done I'll have all my gaming stuff in one area.

What's your favorite part of your collection?

Nostalgia-wise: Final Fantasy IX (PS) - the oldest game I still have the original copy of from my childhood.

Sentimental-wise: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (NES) - for the reasons mentioned above

Value-wise:Stadium Events (NES) & Magical Chase (TG16) - I've been fortunate enough to actually own 2 copies of SE at one point. Magical Chase was more of a pain to find, but a solid Nintendoage member brokered a deal for me through his friend and I ended up getting a great deal on my copy.

What about a favorite series?

Classic Mega Man for sure. Really love just slamming through levels spamming that P-Buster. Nothing else quite captures me the same way.

What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to gaming?

I have no shame! I've enjoyed Mario Kate and Ashley's Crush Course!!

What is the most valuable part of your collection(Value or sentimental)?

Kinda covered this earlier. Stadium Events for Value and Final Fantasy IX for Sentiment

What game do you have the most nostalgia for?

Lots of great memories, but one of my favorites is coming home from school one day and out of the blue (pun intended) my dad had rented Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for my sister and I and sat down and played with us for a few hours.

This happened when I didn't know Sonic 3 was even a thing (too young to follow release dates) and from a father who constantly shamed me for playing video games. After introducing me to Tetris, Civilization II and Super Mario he had abruptly stopped playing any video games. I don't think he picked up another game after Sonic 3 for two decades. It was a really special day for me.

What would you like to improve in your collection?

More shelves!! I'd like to explore handheld a bit more. I've often neglected it and with lots of modern stuff going digital only or just moving in directions that I'm not a fan of it seems like the perfect time to dig deeper into that world.

What do you think was your best deal while game buying?

Probably the 2 Fitness Model Exertainment Bikes each with copies of Mountain Bike Rally/Speed Racer for $300......total Wink

Bought lots of stuff that wasn't a deal at the time though but is in retrospect. $100 for Little Samson seems like a steal these days (was normal at the time)

I'm totally jealous of those bikes. What item in your collection do you feel you overpaid for?

Never done that before

What do you feel is the strangest or weirdest item in your collection?

Most unusual item is probably my Virtual Boy Demo Kiosk. Looks really awesome and came from an old store owner in town who had closed up shop over a decade ago. And how many people can say they have a copy of Wayne's World (NES) signed by Tia Carrera....I'm betting not many.......schwing!

What item(s) do you not have in your collection that people are surprised to hear you don't have?

Any GTA game after II. Once they went 3D I stopped enjoying the series. Get the same flack for any big open world games like Red Dead, Far Cry, Skyrim, etc. Not my thing

Is there any way you'd ever stop collecting?

Nope

Do you have a funny story about your collection?

I've crossed the US Canada border twice with more video games than clothes in my suitcase

Have you ever had to move your collection to another house? What was it like?

Just recently actually. One third of our moving truck was the game room. 2 thirds was all my furniture and families belongings. It was time consuming, but really only have 3 boxes worth of stuff worth fretting over so it went relatively smoothly.

It sucks, period.

If your significant other told you no more games, what would you do?

Put all that money into comics and vinyl to make her rue the day!

What percentage of your games are still sealed?

Probably 5-10%

What percentage of your games have you actually played? Completed?

Not a huge percentage since it's so much quicker to buy than to play. I have however beaten over 300 licensed NES games!

Do you own any complete collections?

Just licensed NES right now. 6 shy of unlicensed too. 2 short of TG16 and closing in on several others.

Time to bring out the fanboys! What is your favorite game of all time?

Mega Man 3 is empirically the greatest game of all time.

Least Favorite?

Resident Evil 4. Ruined one of my favorite franchises!!! Also GTA anything after 3 and any other open world games!

Do you collect anything else besides games?

Heavy Metal music (CD and vinyl), comic books and Brad Pitt movies

What do you do outside of games?

Father to an 8 year old and 8 month old, husband, store owner, care aid, weight training and would love to start playing my guitar again soon!!

What other features would you like to see more of at RFG?

I wanna track my strategy guides and be able to rearrange my collection when I don't agree with your alphabetizing (Iron Sword belongs between Wizards and Warriors 1 and III dammit!!)

Right now I'd have to say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles is probably still my favorite looking, but I'm hoping to restore a Nintendo Red Tent this year and that might take the new spot when it's all done.
