One of these things is not like the other...

Once upon a time, the most desired trait of any home console gamer was to play arcade ports.  In this fashion, one could say that arcades ruled the jungles of electronic video game entertainment.  While complete faithfulness to the arcade original was the holy grail, it was certainly not a requirement, though individual interpretation on the quality of the port was certainly in place, especially in the playgrounds and hallways of schools.

Another episode of But I Like Those Ports! follows, and another three games are presented for your reading pleasure.  In a way, these were the most ambiguous of the small list I drew up of possible games, but it was still hard.  Out of the games left, I might have one more episode left, but who knows.  Perhaps I should start branching out a bit into other territories.

A few days ago I checked-off a bucket list item.  It is a minor one, probably somewhere in the three- to four- hundreds on the list, though it has been there since my early teenage years.  I finally got a decent ending on this little gem:

How this was accomplished makes it an inauthentic accomplishment for some, but it represents an interesting angle on modern and retro gaming and collecting.

May's game of the month here at RF Generation was the quirky musical roleplaying game Rhapsody - A Musical Adventure. It was fun to play through and discuss with everyone else playing along and gave me a reason to review a JRPG for the first time ever. Rhapsody is short and sweet, turns some typical rpg tropes upside-down, and includes great musical numbers. But does the gameplay hold up? Here's my take on the game.

Gargoyle's Quest was released by Capcom in May of 1990 in the west, just over a year after the Game Boy's Western launch. Konami had impressed shortly after launch, with Castlevania: The Adventure, at least visually and in terms of audio, but the game play left much to be desired, as it had been scaled back from its console counterparts and felt incomplete. Rather than trying to bring Ghosts 'n Goblins to the diminutive monochrome handheld, Capcom took a different approach, crafting a unique action game with some storytelling, and added light RPG elements, to make one of the system's finest releases. Watch my latest episode of Dramatic Readings! and see the game in action, while I talk in depth about the game's mechanics. Hopefully, you'll see just why this is such a special game!

In theory, a pinball-centric Metroidvania shouldn't work but Yoku's Island Express feels like a breath of fresh air in an increasingly crowded genre. It's whimsical, charming while staying true to everything I love about 2D platformers. Despite an occasional frustration with the pinball paths I enjoyed every minute of the six-hours I spent unraveling the mysteries of the island.

Cleveland Play House's State Theater

Walking into the theater lobby, it was pretty obvious this was no ordinary stage performance. It wasn't quite the crowd one might see at a con, but it was close. Some were in cosplay, some were wearing tshirts proudly displaying their love of what we'd all come to see. Part of me felt a little overdressed, but thankfully, I wasn't the only one who'd dressed up for the event. I'd thought about trying my hand at some cosplay, but this was theater, and I'm of the mind that theater should typically be dressed up for. Besides, considering I don't have many instances in my day-to-day life when I have a reason to be all fancy-like, I tend to do so when an opportunity arises.

Started in 2007, Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy wasn't the first FF symphony performance to come together, but it's by far the longest running. And so, me and about 3400 other fans decended on the Cleveland Play House to watch conductor Arnie Roth take us on an orchestral journey through some of the most beloved music in all of gaming.

Like most fans of the Castlevania series, Symphony of the Night in particular, I am incredibly excited for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and even contributed to the Kickstarter fund for the game a couple of years ago.  As a nice bonus to Kickstarter backers, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is the fulfillment of a stretch goal promising an 8-bit style game, and it is now available to download for Kickstarter backers and available to purchase for everyone else.  This was a nice surprise for me, as I was unaware (or had simply forgotten) that an 8-bit game was in the works.  When I received an update from the game's Kickstarter informing me that Curse of the Moon was available, I did not hesitate to try it out.

Ion Storm was an interesting company. Its active presence on the market was relatively short, being founded in late 1996 and going belly up in early 2005. For being around nearly a decade there are only two games that most people think of when they hear the company's name. The overhyped and woefully underwhelming Daikatana from Ion Storm Dallas, including one of the most legendary and tasteless advertisements any game has ever had. On the flip side Ion Storm Austin produced the critically acclaimed instant classic Deus Ex. The company later produced a sequel to Deus Ex in 2003 and the third game in the Thief series in 2004, months before closure. Sandwiched between all of these was a game called Anachronox, releasing in 2001.

After the surprisingly fantastic experience I had with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon on the Nintendo Wii, I became curious about one of the other two Wii games with Clancy's moniker, H.A.W.X. 2. I have been aware of this series for quite a while but had never played one of the games. Much like Ghost Recon on the Wii, H.A.W.X. 2 is a game completely independent of games with the same title on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. With H.A.W.X. 2 I kept my expectations low and went in hoping for a low-rent Ace Combat rip-off. To a certain extent, that's what H.A.W.X. 2 is. So, is it worth checking out? Let's take a closer look.

Once upon a time, I was walking through an OfficeMax to get printer paper or some such, when I spotted the PC games cart.  Do you remember those?  This was sometime in 2004, so pretty much every store imaginable had some sort of budget or reduced price PC cart, and given the breadth and width of PC gaming at that point in time, the contents of the PC games cart were always a surprise, and this time was no different.  From the middle I pulled out an orange "small box" PC game with the title, Konami Collector's Series - Castlevania & Contra (KCS-C&C) printed all over.  Per usual, I had no idea what I was holding in my hands, though I was pretty sure it was a collection of pre-1990 PC ports of some of the most beloved classic console games, and that had me very excited.

I imagine you can see where this is going.  Wait, wait, don't look it up yet; you will spoil the fun and possibly deprive yourself a good chuckle at my expense.  The rest of you - well, you know what's coming.
