Joystiq is reporting a price point and release date for the Harmonix developed Rock Band. Who wants to take a stab at the price and date? No one? Well then, there it is:

PS3, XBox 360 - November 23, $170

PS2 - December 10, $160

I could have sworn that they said that the prices would be manageable, not nearing the price of a PSP! Holy crap! Certainly my desire to get this game has significantly dropped off, even if it promises me a harem of women I will not be purchasing this game at that price point. What's even more fun is that November 23 is a special day in the US. It would be... Black Friday. Who wants to fight hordes of shoppers for their copy of Rock Band? Certainly not me.

Sorry EA, but you just killed my interest in your Guitar Hero killer.

Ed: It should be noted that this price is for the Rock Band Bundle. The game is still listed to be $59.99 for the PS3/360 and drums / guitar look to be $80.

WTF? They tell me I can use my GH 2 guitars for the 360, so I was just planning on getting the game and the drums. But $60 + $80 = $140. I might as well get the damn bundle so that I get the mic with it.

Guitar Hero is expensive, but still easily justified by the bundled controller. However, I think that this is just too expensive for most consumers.

I would never spend $80 bucks for a Guitar. Might as well go the distance then, which is way out of my price range.

The kit has a mic, guitar and DRUMS. I think the price is good. I'm in!

That'd be impressive actually, I thought it'd be closer to $199.99. Guitar Hero 3 is listed as $89.99 or $99.99 that's only 1 wireless guitar + game, so Rock Band is actually as great deal at $170 or so.

Two PS3 releases?

Look at it this way. $40 more than Halo 3 Legendary Edition...

I still can't afford next gen gaming... and the games that want me to get into next gen don't help the matter much...

I agree with Tan. The $170 price is $30 below the original estimates of $200. And to buy the whole kit separately would cost at least $250 ($60 game+$80 guitar+$80 drum kit+$30 mic). So it's still a decent deal, it's just that it's a stiff price tag in and of itself.

The fact that it comes out on Black Friday (Nov. 23) is largely irrelevant because pre-orders after this news will likely have the bundle close to selling out long before then.

I didn't realize PS2 was getting it as well. I think that most PS2 owners will likely stay clear of the bundle and focus on just the game and drum kit...provided their GH2 controllers will work with the game, which I don't think anyone has confirmed yet. Is the PS2 version going to have a wireless guitar? The article gave the impression that it does.

And on that note, as a 360 owner and seeing that Guitar Hero 3's guitar will be wireless, I'm wondering if that controller will work with Rock Band as well (just like they say the GH2 guitar will)? If so, I may pass on the bundle and just go for the drum kit and a copy of the game. And how is it that Activision was able to get wireless connectivity to the 360 but EA couldn't? Smells like a limited exclusivity agreement to me...which could mean a wireless 360 version of Rock Band 6 months or so after release?

Overall, I think I'm going to wait until after the holidays until I know more. I also wouldn't put it past EA to announce/release a "Drums-only"  bundle and/or a "Guitar-only" bundle sometime in 2008.

@Tynstar:

You spend that money!

I will! I was going to get it for my birthday but I am going to get rollerblades instead. I broke mine a few years back and have been wanting to get some new ones. Lord knows I could use the exercise. Plus it is OK to go outside again here. My father in law always gets me GameStop gift cards for my birthday and X-mas so that should cover about 100 of the 170. When I get it you can come over and play Dave. You and Eddie can do a road trip.

WOW
Hey, if these are the prices for the next gen in gaming, I think I'll sit this one out.  I love gaming as much as the next person but for the price, I can do so much more.

I can only imagine how huge the box is going to be.
