Welcome to a world where a game's physics engine doesn't dictate what happens. Welcome to a world where damage means nothing, or everything. A world where random spawns are the norm, where accidents DO happen. Welcome to a world of Glitches. Welcome, to The Glitch Files, where you will encounter some of the strangest, most bizarre, and downright odd glitches of the gaming world. Not only will we show you footage of the glitch, but will give directions on how to exactly preform said glitch for yourself!

Today's episode takes us to the Pokemon realm, with the awe-inspiring Missing No. Glitch. This glitch can be preformed on both the Pokemon Red & Blue Versions. This glitch comes with a warning however: you MAY have a chance of corrupting your game save. If you are goofing around, and want to just check it out, download a game save from GameFAQs and find the rom and Emulator for the GB. However, just because it MAY corrupt your game (or some aspects of it), doesn't mean it will. I've done this glitch many times, and my games always remained in working order. And now, to present to you my favorite glitch of all time...

Of course, a video to show what exactly the glitch looks like, by the youtube user PokemonGSC.

*laughs*

What a whacked out glitch, if I do say so myself. Side effects may include: Cloning of everything in the sixth spot of your item bag, botching up Hall of Fame Records, inability to save, Pokemon with levels over 100, Pokemon with 2 moves of the same name, graphical errors, and full data corruption. Very whacked out indeed.

The basic gist of the glitch is a Pokemon, who is a glitch. So, a glitch Pokemon. It has different characteristics depending on your game, as well as its effects. They can vary from game to game. What does always occur? Well, the cloning of the item in the 6th spot in your item pack. You will have roughly 1000 of them, but it will look like 2 garbled characters next to the item name. Some will tell you to never catch this glitch, others, will say it doesn't matter. None of that matters. All that matters is that this is a very cool glitch, and all Pokemon fans should eventually experience it at one time or another.

So, the steps:
  • Turn on your copy of Pokemon Red or Blue, on whatever method of playing you choose.
  • Go to Viridian City and walk north until you reach the Old Man who's just had his coffee. He'll ask if you're in a hurry. Tell him no. Watch a demonstration on how to catch Pokemon.
  • Fly to Cinnabar Island. Get on a water Pokemon and Surf along the east coast of Cinnabar. (In this area, you will encounter Pokemon from the last area you visited. Perhaps visiting here after Safari Zone is a good idea?)
  • Keep Surfing until you discover a "glitched" Pokemon! There you have it! Missing No.!

Now, there are many theories as to what Missing No. is, what it does or doesn't do, etc. You can check out this site to learn about some of these theories, as well as to get more insight into Missing No. itself.

That's all for this episode, but wait! Do you know a cool glitch and want it to be featured in our upcoming shows? PM logical123 in the forums with your idea, and you might just see your glitch featured in our next story!

Until next time, Happy Glitching!

My favorite glitch of all time.  Used it a lot back in my Pokemon obsession days to get lots of Rare Candies.  Never lost any data either, though I did have the messed up hall of fame.

MissingNo. rocked.
I used him for rare candies once.
After that i used him to dupe calcium and the other things you could give to raise stats. It was way more worth it since rare candy made your pkmn wimpy.

Mine always had the stats increase with everyone caught. I also experienced pretty much all of the downsides of catching him. I am pretty sure i have 1 blue and red copy that don't save anymore because of it.

Excellent job. I liked this one because it was a blast from the past for me Smiley

I dont like these kind of glitches. I really like the last two you talked about because they are just neat extra things to tinker around with. I dont like the fact that you can use a glitch to greatly help you improve your characters in this game. Not a fan of missing no.

I love this type of glitch. This was how i started catching Taurus after my first playthru.

One of the strange speculations on MissingNo. was that it was part of a computer system at the lab on Cinnabar and had been altered/combined with various pkmn DNA. Like a Cyborg. Thats why it was a missing number because it wasn't really a pokemon Wink
Kids think the darndest things.
"Pokemon! With the poke and the mon and the mon and the poke!"

Lol, "there are many theories as to what Missing No. is".

It's a glitch, what else?

Or are people really that naive to think Nintendo "put" it in the game, hoping that someone would find out. Tongue

Because the pokemon series has extra pokemon that are not in the initial pokedex count so people want to believe that it really was supposed to be another extra pokemon. Like mew was.

Mew was a last minute edition for the upcoming movie at the time

Mew was already available in Japan as a promotional. They have done promotional pokemon with every game. Come to this event and get this character/item!

The movie was just one of the ways to distribute it.

Pokemon Yellow has surfing pikachu. I think you had to get him from TRU.

Surfing Pikachu could be had by doing something with Pokemon Stadium, I believe

Well, MissingNo. is technically all the Pokemon combined. That is what the programmers used to create the other Pokemon, they took this base, gave it a sprite, and gave it different attacks and names. So, basically, you are just meeting up with a Pokemon, the very first one (being logical) ..
