Many of us Video Game collectors and enthusiasts toy with the idea of having our own Game Store, or at least working at someone else's store. It's definitely more of an option at a younger age, but some of us have trouble letting go of this idea. On May 4, 2013, I posted a thread here on rfgen asking for ideas and opinions about opening my own local Video Game store and it was met with great supportive response. Flash forward to September 1, 2014 and I was celebrating my first successful year of running a such a business. This blog is going to be a chronicle of my involvement from its conception to up to whatever shape it is currently operating in. It will by no means be a "How to", but simply a way for me to explore my experience and open it up for discussion and comments. I hope for it to cover each and every aspect of my journey and I don't expect it to be chronological, but to travel through my store's progress uninhibited. My hope is for this to be as candid as possible so that no subject will be ignored or glossed over. And I will often be looking to the community for ideas on future topics. My time with the store has been both joyous and frustrating, a pleasure and exhausting. I'm eager to share this story with all of you, warts and all.

Can't tell you how excited I was when you first proposed this blog idea to me. I'm sure that I'm not the only one looking forward to it.

Yay! I love warts... what?
Congrats on the first year, Crabby. Looking forward to what you have to share with us.

So exciting. I've thought over and over how I could do the same thing as there are very few game stores outside of GS in my area.

@Duke.Togo: BEST. RESPONSE. EVER.

I am lucky to have been a fly on the wall for the first year. I did my best to support a local business and in turn met the proprietor, who coincidentally, turned out to be a pretty stellar dude.
I have been to Game Quest probably around 200 times, so have been privy to a slow evolution of the store layout. Its been interesting watching how things started, when there was several consoles set up to play on, with 3+ screens, and access to a washroom!! And all seemed pretty good...until the surprise bylaw enforcement in February.
The local bylaw really was maybe a bit too broad in definition, and luckily/seemingly, city council has recently seen the error of their ways. Before the bylaw, trade-ins could almost be a free-for-all but luckily, were usually amicably divided amongst parties present. It was fun and sometimes a challenge, to decide what games a guy wanted to add vs. what he was ok with letting go of. Often Crabby would help nudge by saying: "Don't worry about not grabbing (insert title). It will be here again." I look forward to this again.
As a newer collector of games, but longtime gamer, it has been interesting just observing regular stock that comes through as well. Just random odd observations like: Game Quest has had at least 3 copies of NES Duck Tales 2, but maybe only 2 copies of Metroid. Or the friendly bet that Crabby and I had going about which NES game would have more copies traded in, Mega Man 3 or Metal Gear.
It has been fun to hang out there the past year, and has been a bit of a roller coaster as a regular, but I can't wait to see where the store goes.
