Posted under E3 2008, Microsoft, Xbox 360, Price drop...but not really

Here's the first big news to come out of E3 this year. The rumors have come true. Microsoft is indeed dropping the price of their 20 GB Pro version of the Xbox 360 to $299.99, a $50 savings.

However, there is a catch: this price drop is the exact same thing as the PS3 60 GB price drop of last year. It's merely a move to get rid of the 20 GB models so they can replace them with the more expensive 60 GB model. Yes, that's right, MS is introducing a FOURTH MODEL. That's right, Microsoft is going to be selling four editions of the 360 at once. This model, as stated, will have a 60 GB hard drive and will retail for the $349.99 (the current price of the 20 GB model). So once the 20 GB Pro model is gone, the price drop benefits won't be there...but at least you get 40 GB of additional hard drive space.

But what about the other 360 models? There will be no changes. Yup. Ol' Gimpy (aka: the Arcade) is still $279.99 and the Elite is still $449.99.

Keep it on RF Generation for all the latest from E3.

No surprises here.

I haven't heard any news of a stand alone 60gb Hard drive. I'd actually like to upgrade my 20gB to a 60...but if the price is reasonable.

I honestly don't understand why the Arcade version is still on the market. And if they want to keep it on the market, that's fine, but at least drop the price to $249.99 so it makes prospective Wii buyers at least take a look at it... Tongue

I think the whole SKU setup is retarded. The cost of manufacturing a 20, 60 or 120 gig HDD varies only by a few dollars on their end. Since there is no market for 20 or even much of one for 40gig HDD's, it might even cost more than ones with 100+. These drives are made by the same manufacturers that make PC and laptop drives, so these are considered custom ordered.

They should just have 2 models, the Pro and Elite, separated by a $100 margin with the appropriate accessories and goodies in each to reflect the pricing. This is coming from a guy who owns an Elite but who is still using his 20gig HDD because it's more than enough space than he needs. Yes I have demos, DLC, themes/gamerpics, XBLA games etc etc for dozens of games. Tongue The way I see it, if you need the extra 40gig that the 60 has over the 20, you'll eventually need the 120 gig anyway. Better to have (120Gb) and not need than to need and not have. If your in a country that has a video marketplace worth a damn, 60gig won't last long anyway.

Oh my GOD, it's a FIRE...... sale!
