Well my second blog is for sad news. But at least this time I am not pissed! Kari's cat Nikki has to be put to sleep. She has cancer really bad in her abdomen. Since she is 17 years old and any surgery would probably kill her we have decided not to go that route. She has been diabetic since 2005 and has been getting two insulin shots a day.

The last month or so her health has been going downhill. So we take her to the vet and her diabetes is OK but now her liver levels are off the chart. She starts 2 liquid meds and a pill in addition to her insulin and potassium supplement. The vet says if this helps the liver levels will drop pretty fast. You might be asking yourself what is a liver level. Well for a cat it should be around 130. Nikki's was off the scale and the vets scale goes upto 999. So she is on these new meds for a week and her level is still off the chart. In that week she looses a pound. Well that really sucks she is now on a second pill.

Just a recap that's 1 pill, 2 liquid meds, insulin, potassium supplement and wet food in the morning and at night 2 pills, 2 liquid meds, and wet food.

Ok back to the vet we go after another week on the new pill. Success! Her liver is doing better. It is now in the 800 range still really high but coming down. She gained a little bit of weight back also. So we are happy.

That was last Wednesday. Over the weekend we notice she is walking funny, not eating, and she is sleeping more then normal. So Kari calls the vet this morning and they say bring her in. The vet seems really concerned. Kari leaves Nikki and the vet and they are going to do a bunch of tests on her. The vet says she looks great but only the front half. She is purring, alerts and seems happy. The back half not so good. She is having a harder time walking now even since last night. So Kari leaves her there and heads in to work. I get a call and Kari is crying. Nikki has cancer real bad. There is a huge lump in her abdomen. The vet is sure it is cancer. We knew do to her liver being messed up that cancer might be the cause. It was a huge let down since the good news last week.

So tomorrow at 3:00PM we have an appointm%nt to put her to sleep. It sucks really bad but it is what is best for her. She has had a great live and we don't want her to suffer. Kari has had her all 17 years. This is the only bad part of being a pet owner. She might be gone but she will never be forgotten.

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

Sad news my friend, my condolences. I'm sure so soon after Peaches makes it that much harder on both of you. Sad

Take some solace in that Nikki lived a full life. 17 years is a long lifespan for a cat and something to be grateful for.

Kari and Scott,

Sorry for your sad news:(  Like Tan said, it is awesome that Nikki had a full and happy life.  Now Nikki will give back to you many wonderful memories:)

@c797:
Even so it can still be tough.

I had a cat at my fathers house that i had grown up with, he was 16 or 17 years old when he had died and even though i didn't see him daily it still made me feel awful.

You could take consolation is knowing that not only did she have a full life but it was filled with attention and you guys did your best to keep her in good health and take care of her. Thats what ended up settling me a bit on the issue anyways...

As I have said to you over the phone, I'm glad Nik didn't have to suffer very long. That and she did have a very long life.

My condolences to you and Kari.

P.S. I am going to miss it when Nik would come into your room seemingly whenever I was over.

I'm sorry to hear that.  That sucks.  Take care of each other. Your other pets with know, too, so make sure you take care of them also.

Thats sad... I would of personally put her down when she got diabetes.  My cat needs to be put down...  as described by the bro the other day... "Ty today the cat was running, it ran right into the wall. It was the first time I saw it run in yours.  than it fell down and took a nap"

yeah... thats not a good sign...
