Hey, so RFGeneration, am I right?
This site has been decrepit for... a while now. I'll not waste my time going into the specifics, like how the copyright banner said "2008" for the longest time, how the latest episode of the Press Playcast will be two years old relatively soon, how there are many relics of the just-starting Web2.0 still found here, and the code that just keeps breaking, especially the images... oh wait. I just wasted my time going into specifics.
Let's not get ourselves down about the whole thing, though. slackur and some helpful tech-minded people have been working at giving the site a nice refresh (some of the aspects of which you can already see, such as HTTPS support, some fixed image code, and the removal of the "2008" in the copyright notice, among plenty of things going on under the hood). In the meantime (and hopefully continuing on into the refresh!) we need to breathe new air into the dust to get it living again. This breath happens to be video game flavored, due to how things work around here.
slackur put me on content creation duty when it comes to the refresh, and while I can certainly help with other things necessary (such as graphic design drafts; I am Gen Z), creating content is where I've found my best skillset for this website. This shows, since it's been a while since one of my articles HASN'T been on the Hot Community Entries list.
What better idea to both have new RFGen content and have something to do all year gaming-wise then stepping back in time to a console with a lot of very fun games known as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and trying to beat all of its (North American, officially-licensed) games?
What started as a couple of jokes on the #nes2019 channel in the RFGen Discord has now become a full community challenge that hopefully will have several interested people and a lot of fun to be had.
As previously stated, our goal is to beat all of the officially-licensed North American SNES games on official hardware. A secondary goal is to use the forums as much as possible, because the best way to drum up interest in a site is to use it.
If you don't have official hardware, that's okay! Emulators are fine, as long as you don't use save states or abuse emulator-specific functions.
I really think that this will be a fun event and will help drum up interest in RFGen. Signing up isn't necessary - you only need to be an RFGeneration forum member, and have the ability to play SNES games, and considering that most of us are collectors, we probably have an SNES or two lying around (...or a computer that can emulate it...)
If you want to contribute to the refresh but aren't able to code or anything that Those Tech Wizards can do, then beating them SNES games this year and using the forum while doing it is a great way to contribute. It drums up interest in RFGen, and you're actively doing things for the site on the site, something that hasn't been done in many a year. With this goal, I really think many people would be interested in RFGen, give it a try, enjoy it, become lasting members, and then we can have a bigger community of collectors. Let's get this site out of the grave. Clear out the cobwebs! Refresh the site! having actual content is a great way to contribute. SNES games for the win, baby!

2017 was a very weird year for me. I was in a funk for much of the year and not really enjoying any of the things that I used to love so much. I wasn't happy running my game store, I didn't want to air guitar to my favorite bands, I wasn't exercising or eating healthy like I typically do, I wasn't watching cool sci-fi movies or TV shows, I wasn't reading any new comics, I wasn't socializing much if at all most months, and for the first time I can ever remember I didn't really have a desire to play games when I had the chance. It was a lame year and 2018 started off just as depressing. Early in 2018 though I was able to get control of my mind once again and make some important changes in my life that made me start to appreciate things again and see the joy in all the things I used to love so very much.

Our most active and devoted database editor and fellow collector is currently dealing with serious short-term financial issues. Although selling off his collection, which may be very difficult to reacquire, is an option for him, I know we can let him know how much we appreciate his work on the site by providing in his time of need. When you purchase a new game for $60, tossing a $5, $10, or $20 donation to assist affects your wallet so little but helps so much. This is a community, so let us show what we can do. Shadow can always purchase a copy of Earthbound for each of us in better times.
As some of you may know I've been slowly gathering licensed NES carts over the last several years working towards my goal of a cart only licensed set. When I first started getting into collecting NES games it was because I scored a lot of around 50 games on ebay for a low price back in something like 2005-6ish. It amazed me how many interesting games I hadnt even heard of.
The collecting bug took hold and I scoured ebay for a similar lot, but with different games. After several months I ended up with about 100 games, for around $100, and a new found passion. Going to school, getting married, and having a son put a bit of a strain on my finances shortly after. I was still very interested in pursuing new games for a variety of systems, but with a special interest in the NES.
After looking around online for more info on these games I stumbled across racketboy, and through them, rfgeneration. Learned tons of tips on finding games both locally and online that fit my budget made my interest in collecting explode even further. Every day on the way to work would involve a quick stop at local pawn/resell/thrift stores and my saturday morning eaten up by relentless garage sale-ing.
Because of the poor area I live in for picking up games I decided to learn to supplement my local finds with some online purchases and trades. Ebay had been getting less and less appealing as I honed my new penny-pinching skills over the last couple years. Buy/Sell/Trade forums became a great resource and I owe thanks to dozens of members from sites like racketboy, rfgeneration, nintendoage, and gametz. These forums supplied me with cost effective, reliable, trustworthy and equally passionite gamers and collectors to deal with. Much more satisfying than buying from a faceless ebay seller on all fronts.
So you may be wondering whats promting my wave of nostalgia and praise to these communities. Well its thanks to conversing and dealing with the fantastic people across these forums, and feeling that I'm a part of a community, that helped lead me to the conclusion that I need to dive right in and work hard towards completing a goal thats important and enjoyable to me. With that in mind I've been snatching up the generally obscure NES titles over that last couple years. The ones that are generally in most peoples last 10-20 games. I've picked up already: Flintstones 2, Little Samson, Bubble Bobble 2, Snow Bros, Power Blade 2, Bonk's Adventure, Duck Tales 2, Chip n Dale 2, Panic Restaurant, Zombie Nation, Fire n Ice, Contra Force and others. Most of the games left were obtainable withing a certain amount of time with the one obvious exception.....Stadium Events. After dicsussing it with my wife and spending the last several years being quite frugal we were finally in a situation where I could justify the expense.
So in short I just want to thank all of you for assisting me in the formation of my conclusion that is ok, even rational, to spend a large sum of money on a game that I can not only buy a variant of for less than $10 any day of the week, but play for free through a computer. I really appreciat it guys!!!! Should be smooth sailing from here on....

But seriously, bad puns aside, the site is finally back Online, and I could not be happier. I would like to thank all of our wonderful Staff Members for working so hard to bring it back, and putting up with me in the Chat Room while they were doing it.

What we want from you is to ask us some questions. slackur and I both agreed that there should be some sort of an introductory episode that lets you know just where we are coming from when we are giving our opinions. The time between our ages is about the same as a console generation, so while we have probably played many of the same games, we are bound to have different viewpoints on different games and topics. Over the years, gaming has gone from a sort of niche hobby to a full-blown, mainstream activity. I seen gaming go from an activity that only a few of my friends growing up did to dorm room gaming to my 1080p, 5.1 audio setup at home. The first community I was a fairly active member of was the GameFAQs forum. Did the collection on IGN, tried out Digital Press forums before finding my way here. I lurked for a while, primarily using only the Collection tools. I finally started posting more and more, and the people here are extremely nice and really my kind of people. Then came the chat.
I jumped in, and as the new guy, I sort of found it difficult to jump in. After 2-3 times (that I could tell), I felt like I was starting to feel as a part of the group. I am now on a first name basis with pretty much everyone in chat. This type of small community is what I need. I grew up in a small town, and that's the sort of vibe I get here. These people are RFGeneration, down to the roots.
I'm very thankful for this place. It's kind of hard for someone like me to put myself out there and jump into conversation, but when I did, I wish I would have sooner. I plan on sticking around for a long time and I really hope that the community grows while keeping the roots of the small site. I consider all of you my friends and hope to meet many more of you along the way.
