As many of my friends know, I absolutely despise Critics and everything about them. They're stupid, and everyone agrees with them no matter what.
Where did this all begin? It began when I first read Gamespot's review of Mobile Suit Gundam Crossfire. They were completely harsh on this game, and because of they're review of it, everyone judged the game unfairly, when in reality, there is a fun game here.
My point is this: Whenever a Critic says something is bad, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE agrees with them, even if they're opinion is different. People would rather be wrong than be different, for whatever reason. It annoys the hell out of me how things work with these people.
Am I a Critic? Yes, I am. I review Games and Movies, but I differ in the aspect of reviews in that mine are opinionated and that very few people agree with them. Critics like IGN and Gamespot just put what the people want to see, as opposed to writing what they truly feel. In short, they don't know what the hell they're doing.
For example, did EVERYONE hate the House of the Dead movie? No. Did it get judged unfairly? Yes. Why? BECAUSE OF CRITICS!!...Sorry. Anyway, I really don't like critics, and that is final.
Disclaimer: This is just a rant. If your going to agree with me, fine. If your going to disagree, at least keep your argument civil and under control. I don't need any flame wars happening here.
Oh, and Duke Nukem Forever does not suck.

My roommate's a game reviewer, and he's had threats of personal violence, including a pipe bomb sent to his office, because people didn't like his reviews, when he posted exactly what was on his mind. I'm not surprised most reviewers just go with the flow.

That's why I only agree to disagree with anyone who agrees with me. That way I maintain my group independence with everyone who thinks like I do, except myself. We're all individual; We're all independent! Except me.
Kudos if you catch the source.

Just wanted to mention that I love your profile picture.

I've learned that its ok to like bad things.

But.... the House of the Dead movie did suck. I love the games and never saw any review of the movie so hired it in good faith.
The whole thing felt more like a music video with such a long bullet-time sequence while the music blasts away and with actual scenes of the game even thrown in.

Dear Sir,
Duke Nukem Forever is amazing, and you have every right (and my undying gratitude) for posting this rant
Sincerely, Anyone who actually played the game for fun

Well, I can’t speak for everyone—and I mean EVERYONE—but I’ve always taken most critiques and reviews of various forms of commercial entertainment, be it games, movies, or music, with a grain of salt. It’s probably due to my local paper’s film critics rarely giving any new theatrical release a rating above 3.5 stars. Well, except for the more artsy stuff.
One thing I do before I read a review is consider its source. I’m a bit more skeptical of reviews in publications that are directly linked to a particular company involved in the industry (Nintendo Power, the official PlayStation & XBox magazines, and GameStop’s Game Informer) than I am of others. ‘Course, that’s not to say there isn’t any collusion and/or payola goin’ on behind the scenes at other video game publications…
I also consider the fact that many critics either used to work in the industry that they are now critiquing and weren’t successful at it, or they weren’t able to get into the industry in the first place. Which means they probably harbor more than a little bitterness over their experiences, not to mention jealousy over those who have been successful, and take it out on their former employers & colleagues with their poison pens.
I’m also sure there are a few critics who do negative reviews because they grab the reader’s attention more than mediocre-to-positive ones. Cuz if there’s one thing that grabs attention, it’s negativity, especially the angry and caustic kind (just ask that Angry Video Game Nerd guy, he’ll tell you). Basically, they’re IRL trolls who’ve figured out how to make a living off of what they do best: pushing people’s buttons.
Still, I’m not of the belief that all critics and reviewers are complete and utter dirtbags. While there are those who are only in it to get a rise out of people, I still have faith—a naïve and foolish faith, perhaps, but faith none the less—that there are some out there who are giving their earnest and most sincere thoughts on what they’re critiquing. Only problem is, it can be tough to distinguish the genuine folks from the trolls and character-actors with a keyboard and an agenda. Hopefully, with some solid critical thinking and experience, one can make the distinction, and not get all butt-hurt over some yahoo’s dopey opinions.

Was it Ted Kaczynski?
Seriously, while one might disagree with another’s opinions on various entertainment media, and perhaps even dislikes how the opinion is conveyed, those aren’t any reason whatsoever to react with that kind of malice and violence. Hey, I can’t stand Pokemon games or the Star Wars prequels, but I’m not gonna go postal on those who do.
I might respond with a vigorous noogie, but that’s about it.
‘Cuz when you get down to it, they’re just fun diversions (well, fun for someone else, anyway), not life-and-death.
It’s stuff like this that have me praying for the aliens to abduct me… permanently. Just take me away from this planet, and never come back. The idiocy of others simply overwhelms me some times.
Before I hop off the soap box, though, I’d like to know if they ever caught the nutso who mailed the pipe bomb to your buddy? I sure hope so; that dude needs to be permanently segregated from society, preferably in solitary confinement. If he went fu©ko-bazoo over a game review, God only knows what other relatively insignificant stuff might set him off.

Recently bought a lot of games for my Sega Game Gear, and my favorite of the lot may be Legend of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse. Do I care what anyone else thinks? Not even! I don't hate all professional critics, but you have to match the critic that most closely resembles what you like. NEVER pay attention to all of them!!!
|
I never read professional reviews. If something looks good to me, I play it (or watch it, in the case of movies) and make my own opinion of it. If I'm unsure, I go to my fellow gamers and see what they're saying/writing about it. But I always take what they say with a grain of salt, as I know everyone has different opinions and taste.
My only real criteria for rating something is if I enjoy it. If I watch a movie and am able to follow it and don't get bored, its a good movie IMO. If I want to keep playing a game past the first few minutes, its a good one. I want my entertainment to entertain me. I don't care if the storyline was done before, or who the Director/Writer/Developer/Publisher was, and I don't care if they used the latest technology to make it.
