The above Ad/Promo was used for the 3DO in Japan. If you watch the beginning of it, you'll notice it says "BIG HIT IN THE USA!", which leads us to today's topic: Lying through Advertisements.

While it is true that the 3DO has it's fans (I'm one of them), the general gaming public was not ready to welcome the thing with open arms, partly due to it's high price tag, which even the PS3 couldn't match. It's a known fact that the thing didn't exactly sell all that well. That being said, why do the people who make Ads call what they are advertising the best thing ever, when all it takes is word of mouth/a little research to reveal the truth?

What I'm getting at here, is why do they lie about it in the first place, knowing that it's just going to come back and bite them later? Are the Advertisement People just doing they're jobs to put bread on the table, or are they truly dedicated to what they are doing? If I had to guess, I'd say the former applies here. That being said, I'm honestly not sure what the real reason is, I'm just guessing.

Don't get me wrong though, I really do enjoy the 3DO, but I'm also not an idiot. It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to see that the thing didn't make it.

If you have any thoughts on this, feel free to shout them out in the comments. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play Samurai Shodown RPG.

My guess is that they forgot to add a letter to the word "hit."

Other than that, I wouldn't mind trying the 3DO out, seeing as I own several games that are rarin' to be played. Sigh. Some day...

Honestly,  the internet was not as big at this time and information did not flow as smoothly as it does today.  It looks as if it hit store shelfs in japan 5 months after the launch in america.  I am sure at this time sales slowed down but most consoles start off selling a decent amount around launch just due to the early adapters.  He also says "coming to you soon" at the end of the video.  I would just say it is safe to assume it was doing ok at this point since it was new to the market.

I think it was prepped to be the next big thing, and if you didn't take into account a few key things (overpricing, limited controller) it looked like a sure-fire hit.  Heck, a friend and I spent a great deal of time haunting the 3DO kiosk at the local Best Buy, playing Crash N Burn and Need for Speed waay to much.  I remember being so disappointed when it came out at that price point.  There was just no way my piddly job at KFC was going to supply that, certainly not when FF3 was just around the corner.

Like you guys I'd love to pick one up some day.  They had probably the best port of Star Control II available (which was later ported to the PC and released as freeware).  It's just not in the cards for now.

Something interesting: While I looking at Wikipedia I came across a list of competitors.  Taking into account consoles and name branded computers (Amiga, Tandy) the 3DO faced a total of 12 competitors though out it's life (1993-1996).

There were two things in the Christmas catalog I knew I could never afford at launch - the 3DO and the Laseractive. $599.99 and $799.99 base price, if I remember correctly. Cry
