From the original Zelda games on the NES to GoldenEye 007 on the N64 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the PS2, we take a look at the consoles of choice for retro gamers across America.
You never forget the first time you completed Super Mario Bros. You also never forget the first time you held one of those iconic retro Playstation controllers or when the best way to troubleshoot a game was to blow the cartridge.
Times have changed and new consoles have come and gone, but there is still something to be said about those iconic gaming systems that we were raised on. Their games have a unique charm that no amount of fancy graphics can make up for, which is why we turn to emulators and why original NES games still in their boxes go for hundreds of dollars on eBay.
To celebrate the release of a new infographics, which digs into the favorite consoles by state and favorite games by states, we thought wed jump on in and take a look at the data.
Head on over to https://www.jjgames.com/blog/ to check it out!

It's hard to believe that, only 1 year ago, the RF Generation Shmup Club was just ramping up, and starting our 2nd month. After playing various versions of R-Type throughout the month of May, we were beginning to jump into the original Gradius, and getting steeped in a couple classics of the shoot-em-up genre. As I reflect upon the past year, it's been an interesting ride. I never imagined I'd be doing this, but I'm glad I started it, and I'm even happier that it's taken off in such a big way.

I recently stopped at Goodwill and came across a Halo Green Xbox 360 controller. I noticed it was weathered and the button presses felt like stepping in mud, a telltale sign that someone had spilled soda on it. The back had duct tape holding the battery pack in suggesting that the controller suffered from power issues. I moved the thumbsticks around and surprisingly they centered almost every time. I decided that this controller was worth saving and would be a great project.

This would be so noire if it weren't for all the blue and yellow While live-action movies based on anime have been met with mixed results in recent history, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu has the benefit of the insanely popular title characters. Between that, a trailer that looked not terrible, and the star power of Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, I was fairly confident the movie would make scads of money regardless of its quality. That said, I was interested to see if it held up for someone who doesn't know a pokeball from a dive ball.

There is plenty of opportunity to participate regardless of your skill level, favorite style of game or the amount of time you have to invest. Come over and play with us here:

For the last couple months even cutting our community goal drastically we've continually fallen short of our monthly targets. So this month, and possible just going forward, I'm scrapping the community goal to hit a certain number of games. I was really hoping to have at least half the library done by now (and we are extremely close to doing so) to give use some extra wiggle room later in the year, but we will persevere regardless.
Participation has dropped off massively in the last 2 months and we could still use all the help we can get. So please take a look at the list of remaining games and join in if you're able to. Still lots of great titles that haven't been attempted yet as well as many hidden gems to yet be uncovered!
I wish I had liked this game more than I did, because everything but the gameplay is really fun and enjoyable. I wonder what was going on over at Stormfront Studios that made them drop the ball when it came to the gameplay for Demon Stone. The Two Towers was a great mix of linear levels and big setpieces, with responsive and satisfying combat. Then they took out a lot of the good parts and gave us this game.

I am not generally a person who likes to poke the past too hard. True, most (if not all) of my writing tends to be nostalgia based, but I like to think of it as nostalgia with a purpose. There are some games that I've purposely kept at a distance, primarily because I am afraid of damaging the nostalgia for said game. Suikoden is one of those games. But when I saw it in the PSN store for just under $4, I couldn't help myself, and decided to jump in and play. I wasn't disappointed. Well, almost.

Episode 011 of Shoot the Core-cast is here, and it's all about the lone shoot-em-up produced by Japanese RPG factory, Squaresoft. During the mid-late 1990's, the company deviated somewhat from their RPG formula, and tried their hand at a few different genres. Ehrgeiz is an interesting wrestling/fighting game, Tobal No. 1 is a fighting game with some unique elements, and Einhander is a side-scrolling 2.5D shooter, wrapped in 3D graphics, and soaked in an esoteric, dystopian, cyberpunk, futuristic story. Complemented by a varied electronic soundtrack, this game brings a unique ability to take weapons from your enemies, and use them to defeat everything in your path. Over the years, the game has earned quite a reputation as one of the best shooters on the original PlayStation. Why is it so well loved, and what makes this game so special? We dive into that in this episode, and try to dissect this game, to see what makes it tick.

Thanks in no small part to the ongoing RFGeneration 2019 NES Challenge, I have been working through dozens of NES games that I have never played before. While I have logged most of these toward the site challenge, I have also been going back and playing some of the titles that were claimed and completed by others just to satisfy my own curiosity. One such title is Strider, which was a completely random pick and one that I was fairly unfamiliar with. Upon starting it, it didn't take long for me to become engrossed, and I now consider it to be one of my favorite titles for the system.

In hindsight Nintendo looks prophetic with its adoption of a touchscreen in the years just before the idea of the smartphone takes hold in the public consciousness. This touchscreen allowed many gameplay ideas that were once slow and clunky to become much smoother. Point and click adventure games are mostly known from the PC market, but there have been some ports and original point and clicks on older consoles and handhelds. The DS with its touchscreen allowed point and click adventure games to be played in the palm of everybody's hand, and there was an explosion of them. One of the early prominent developers of DS point and click adventures was the Japanese developer Cing. In 2005 they released Another Code: Two Memories, which was renamed Trace Memory for North America. In 2007 the company released Hotel Dusk: Room 215, both of these titles did quite well for the small developer. However, Cing was not able to keep this momentum rolling and went defunct in 2010.
Hotel Dusk was the first of a two part series, with its sequel being Last Window: The Secret of Cape West. Both games released on the DS, and Last Window was also Cing's final game before going bankrupt. Nintendo published all these DS titles, but part of Cing's problems may have been the seemingly random release regions of their games. Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk released in Japan, North America, and Europe and achieved some success. Last Window and Trace Memory's sequel, Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories for the Wii, only released in Japan and Europe. Last Window released too late in Cing's life to likely come to North America, they were already dying when the game was releasing. What was strange about Hotel Dusk was that its first release region was in North America. So what made Hotel Dusk so special that many adventure game fans had to have it and play it? What gave it the crossover appeal to give it that little extra push?

Devil's Third is an obscure title only available on the ill-fated Wii U, but fans of schlocky action games should take note.

If you've never been to a video game convention, I can't recommend it enough. My Beloved and I have been attending a few on an annual basis for about fifteen years, and every time has been exciting and fun. It is more than coming across some great collection finds; over the years we have forged great friendships, shared fascinating stories, competed (poorly) in competitive tournaments, seen some great cosplay, realized we weren't alone in our passion for gaming, and overall had great experiences unique to every year. Now, my family has finally decided to plunge into the other side and give back.

Jackie Chan has starred in a few video games over the years. After Hudson Soft purchased the licence to use his likeness, they released Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu on NES.
