In Episode 027, Addicted and MetalFRO pick apart a Japanese doujin title that borrows heavily from Taito's RayForce, as well as its sequels. Siter Skain's Kamui originally released in 1999, and hit Steam 15 years later. Does is blatant plagiarism detract from the game's own original elements? And is this game fun? Listen to the episode, and we get into all of that, and more!

Hey all you retro gamers! In this episode of RetroActive we look at the Sega Genesis classic Wonder Boy in Monster World. A video game that released early in the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive lifespan and has been on a lot of compilations but still flies a bit under the radar when compared other games of the era. If you enjoy your classic side-scrolling action games with a bit of RPG flair it is worth checking this game out. Watch the video and learn why!

One of the things that I've been thinking about lately is variety. As the saying goes, "Variety is the spice of life." As I've gotten older, and have less time to game than I used to, I want to make sure that I'm still having new experiences, and not getting stuck in a rut. Being a podcast host, focusing on a single genre, it would be easy for me to fall into the rote exercise of playing that one type of game, and make my gaming life pretty shallow. Thankfully, I haven't (yet) succumbed to such a fate.

One way to alleviate that potential  fate is to jump into mobile gaming. Already, some have stopped reading after the last sentence, but I don't mean you should play terrible phone games. What I mean is, do something different. I don't play a lot of mobile games, but I enjoy the occasional match-3 type of game. It exercises my brain differently than the types of games I play on console or PC. I also play Words With Friends, to help continue to develop my vocabulary, and I often fire up some version of Solitaire on my phone, when I only have 5 or 10 minutes to play, and don't otherwise have access to something else. Besides that, Solitaire makes a great distraction while you're sitting on the throne, so to speak.

Department stores that have been forgotten to the past and closed down. Lots of these department stores and retail outlets have lots of fond memories for us adults now. Growing up and going to some of these stores like Circuit City, Toys R Us, Caldor, and more, bring back a different time. Now that they no longer exist we cherish these memories of browsing their aisle stacked with toys, video games, board games and much more!

The rumors have been swirling for what feels like years now about Amazon getting into the video game space. It's one of the few, if not only, areas of content delivery they have yet to tackle. This past week it finally happened. They're calling the service Luna, and like Google's Stadia, it's a cloud-based gaming service. We're close to a year out from Stadia's shaky launch and mere weeks since Microsoft's Game Pass cloud gaming (formerly X-Cloud) rolled out to Android phones. So how does Luna compare, and more importantly, will it learn from Google's mistakes?

As I've likely mentioned on the site before, I'm a huge fan of the survival-horror genre and like to dedicate as much of the months of September and October as I can to playing titles from the genre. While everyone is familiar with genre staples such as the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series, there are plenty of more obscure titles that are well worth checking out. With the Halloween season upon us, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the lesser-known games from the genre that fit the mood.

Spooky Plays: Dead Rising: http://www.rfgeneration.c...lays-Dead-Rising-3793.php

A couple years ago Spooky Plays looked at the first Dead Rising, a fun and unique open world zombie sandbox experience that's not really much of a horror game. Its more of a love letter to classic zombie movies with some other horror tropes thrown into the mix. Lawyers working on behalf of George A. Romero even sued Capcom for how similar Dead Rising is to classic zombie movie Dawn of the Dead. For most of the game the zombies are little more than a nuisance and the real horror comes from the game's still living Psychopath boss fights. After the success of Dead Rising, Capcom tasked Blue Castle Games with development of a sequel, which would release in 2010 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and a bit later on PC.

Lately I've been going back to a lot of albums that were important to me in the 2000-2010 decade. It all started when we were doing our 2007 alums of the year list for the podcast. Though the Justice self-titled album made my list, I mentioned that I didn't think it quite had the lustre it used to, but that another album I listened to a lot around the same time, Crystal Castles self-titled debut, absolutely did. Since we recorded that episode, the Crystal Castles album has remained in heavy rotation. It is still every bit as fresh and exciting as it was when it came out. I would end up going on a bit of a rabbit hole looking for albums I used to love but had kind of forgotten about. Here are a few that deserve a look.

In Episode 026, Addicted and MetalFRO cover a game that's just 2 years old, but in that short time, has already garnered wide attention from the shmup community. ZeroRanger, from Finnish development duo System Erasure, is a game that wears its influences on its sleeve, along with wearing them everywhere else. And yet, the game still carves enough of its own identity, to not be consumed by the games that it homages. What makes this game special, and why has it got so much attention? Have a listen, and we'll try to quantify that!

So it's time for September's list after a short hiatus in August, but instead of looking at just one system, we looked two systems that didn't quite reach the mainstream sales of their competitors, but had some excellent titles nonetheless.

The TurboGrafx 16 was ahead of its time with some of the innovations it brought to the gaming world, and several titles have become "cult classics" at the very least. Produced by NEC alongside Hudson Soft, it was marketed as a 16-bit console (though it was more of a hybrid between 8-bit and 16-bit technology) to compete with Sega's Genesis, and later Nintendo's Super NES.

The Saturn was Sega's fifth generation console, set to compete Sony's debut console, the Playstation, and eventually the Nintendo 64.

Posted under how to forget how to live losing your mind to a 15 dollar puzzle game., the brilliance of, baba is you

Welcome to the first of a series called The Brilliance Of! In this series I plan on showing my favorite ames and reasons why you should play them!

Baba Is You is a puzzle game. Now, before you go click off this article, I didn't like puzzle games either, until this game led me to explore the genre again. Baba Is You is a 2D box-shover puzzle game, but it gets more advanced than that. In the game you control a character named Baba. I couldn't find good art of this guy online. Sorry. So, like I said, this game is a box-shover. You move this Baba around (the developer puposely made the character a blank slate [I will admit it does look like a sheep though]) and move rocks.

                                                                       here's my first
                                                                   SPOILER WARNING

If you plan on playing this game, here are the links:
Nintendo Switch: https://www.nintendo.com/...etail/baba-is-you-switch/
Steam: https://store.steampowere...m/app/736260/Baba_Is_You/
Developer official website: http://www.hempuli.com/baba/

Ok, now back to our SCHEDULED PROGAMMING, in this game, the rules of the game are actual blocks that can be pushed around. For example, WALL IS STOP is a rule that is used commonly, meaning that you can't go through walls. Another one used commonly is ROCK IS PUSH, meaning that by holding to rocks, you can move them one tile per turn holding to them. BABA IS YOU meaning that you control Baba. The last one of the bunch is FLAG IS WIN, meaning that if you touch the yellow flag you win the course, meaning that you get one flower added to your total and unlock the next PATH in the set of the world you're in. Now, by pushing these rule blocks into other sentences, such as WALL IS PUSH, FLAG IS STOP, ROCK IS YOU, and BABA IS WIN. These sentences act like their usual counterparts, too.

                                            Congratulations, you just unlocked another
                                                                SPOILER WARNING

Seriously, if you haven't played the game and intend to, it's probably in your best interest to
                                                          not read beyond this point.

After playing the game for a long period of time, you'll start to realize that everything can be interacted with in this way. From the characters to the collision to the way game works to the levels entirely, everything can be interacted with. And there isn't a difficulty spike, either. Every time you step into another area or world, they introduce a new concept and they build on difficulty over the course of the world or area. The developer, Arvi Tekari (Hempuli), says that the way he does this is he'll take a concept and create a level, then work backwards from the solution to create a fun and enjoyable experience for the player. This game made coding, in part, seem much more fun to me then before. And, coding is fun, by the way. I know that now after, let's see here, 5 hours of coding.

                                                              GNINRAW RELIOPS
I'd recommend reading this before purchasing the game.

In other areas, Baba Is You will still excel. The music is perfect. It's my second favorite video game music. It is a treat to listen to. Baba Is You is great for the price, too. This is the best game you can get on Switch for $15. It even sometimes goes on sale!

This was a pain to make, but worth it.

This is a game collector's website. That seems like an obvious statement, but I feel it's important to frame this article immediately. After all, one of the first rules you learn about writing, performing, etc. is that you need to know your audience. Most of you who visit this site, and decide to make a home here, do so because you collect games. I collect games, as well. Over time, however, the way I collect games has changed. My tastes haven't changed, so much as other factors I'll delve into here. Ultimately, what I want to accomplish with this write-up is to instill the need for you as a game collector to have a plan.
