A Momentary Lapse of Awesome

I went to the retro game expo in Portland this weekend. So much to see and do, I ended up with tons of pictures. I thought it would be better to blogify the whole thing rather than clog up some thread.

PRGE has been going on every year for the last several years. Last year was the first one I went to, it was great. This one was as good as last year, with even more added. The first few pictures are a little bit from the show, the ones at the end are of things I bought.

Just a few of the arcade machines, there must have been more than 100, all on freeplay.

A row of pinball. We spent some time here, would have liked to have spent more.

The All Gen Gamers panel. My wife stood up during the question and answer part, I bet she'll be on the next podcast.

They did a screening of the documentary The Ecstasy of Order, about the Tetris world champions. Afterward most of the cast, the best Tetris players in the world, came up on stage for questions and answers.

On to stuff I bought:

Some random less than $1 stuff.

More $1 or less stuff.

PC games. Got two copies of Mech Warrior 2 'cause of lan parties, looks like one might be a preview/demo though. I don't know if it will work with the other.

I am now the proud owner of an e-reader. This will have to count as my new console for the show. I wanted to get a TG16 but all the sellers wanted more money than what I wanted to give them. In fact all the consoles seemed to be more expensive this year, I wonder why?

e-reader was $5, e-reader card $1, the (sealed) deck of cards and controller less than $1.

Saturn games seemed a little spendy too, which is why I only got these. And the Command & Conquer is missing a disc. The cart is great though, ($25) now I can play imports! I had to buy one import game, so I just picked something random that was cheap. Really, the Saturn games seemed to be as high or higher than ebay. Most everything at the show was a great price, but consoles and Saturn games. They seemed spendy to me anyways.

Taiko Drum Master! My wife has really wanted this. We only found the one, but it is complete and in great condition. $30

I am on the hunt to get a complete (or near complete) US Odyssey^2 collection. Up until now I didn't have any import stuff, a guy sold me all this for $25. He was a pretty nice guy, even had some other, way expensive and rare, import O2 stuff there I got to see and talk to him about. As it is, those four games on the bottom right I'll need to enter in to the database.

Managed to find a few more games I needed. Conquest of the World! is merely a placeholder as this is a game you really need to have complete but at only $2 I picked it up. Monekeyshines! and Pachinko! were in the $2ish range. Demon Attack is one of the harder ones to find, it shows up on ebay but only a few times a year. The value has been hard for me to peg, I paid $25, maybe a little high, but it was there in front of me Smiley

I am down to needing 7 games for the complete US set. 7.5 if you only count Conquest of the World! as half a game.

Looks like you had a great time and found some nice items. What was your favorite part of the show?

great haul man! And you're so lucky to have an actual Halo 2600 cart. I played thru the ROM a couple years ago and was just blow the hell away by that game. If you haven't yet -- read Racing The Beam. That will just make you appreciate the game even more.

How was Ecstacy Of Order? Been dying to see that myself.

And so cool that you got to see All Gen Gamers live.

@Addicted: Yeah, I had a great time. My favorite part is the vendors area. Going there to buy stuff is great, good deals to be found all over. And just looking at all the stuff for sale is cool too, all sorts of stuff normally only seen In pictures on the internet.

The arcade is somewhere I could spend all day, I wish there was more time :-)  And I could see someone just sitting in the panels all day too. You know, its just a fun show all around.

@noiseredux: Thanks! Halo 2600 is the first, "homebrew" (not quite the right word for this game) I own. I've wanted it since I heard about it. I'll definitely be on the lookout for Racing the Beam.

Ecstasy of Order is a pretty solid documentary. We enjoyed it. I don't think there are any huge surprises, but it is fun and interesting. If you think you might at all be interested in seeing it, you won't be disappointed. A few weeks ago I heard it may be coming to Netflix, I don't know if the movie is there yet but you might want to check that out.
