It looks like it's finally going to happen. I'm finally going to move my game room again. Ironically, it's going to the same room it was originally. So, I thought I might as well do a blog on what's going on with the move and how it's working out.

But first, I'm going to give a little background on the history of my game collection and how it got to be where it is today.

It all started a few years ago when I first started collecting. I had no other place to keep my collection, so it went into a somewhat unused corner of my bedroom. At first, it worked out nicely, I had my GCN and N64 in the living room and my NES and SNES hooked up to an old spare TV in my gaming corner. At this point, I had less than 100 games in total, so space wasn't an issue, and I figured it wouldn't be for years to come.

This is the first iteration of my game collection, I call it Room of Doom 1.0

But quickly things started to pile up in places they didn't belong and it was too crowded to enjoy anything. It wasn't long before the couch in my collection corner looked something like this:

On the days when it was actually clean and things put into place it looked like this:

I call this Room of Doom 1.5 and it was very cramped, but I could still live with it, barely.

Luckily, at about this same time, my sister was moving out of the house, so the smallest bedroom in the house was empty, so I was able to take it over.
Having an entire room for my collection, I was able to spread things out considerably and had room for many, many more games. Once I had it all set up, I could no longer fit the entire collection in one picture, but the majority of it all fit into this picture:

This was Room of Doom 2.0 in June of 2007. Since then, I've added a ton of new games, systems, accessories, and memorabilia, but it's retained it's overall design. And I really do like it the way it is now, it's just too small of a room to properly display and house my collection.

My most recent picture of Room of Doom 2.5 (taken in January 2009) looks like this:

In that picture there was still a little bit of room to expand, but not much. And since I've acquired over 300 more games since then, it's really at its breaking point as far as being presentable. Just about every shelf is filled (or over-filled) to the max.

So, a few months ago, I decided I wanted to switch my bedroom and game room, putting my game room in the larger room and my bedroom in the smaller room. My only obstacle was getting my parents' permission. Finally, after months of negotiations, my mom and I came to an agreement that I could do the switch, but I had to completely clean out both rooms, paint them and have new carpet put in them. I thought that was fair, and now that both my parents are retired, we have the time to do it all.
There is only one problem with this. My mom wants to carpet the entire upstairs and since her and my dad are also pack rats, we don't really have any space to clean out 3 rooms at once, so we're currently trying to figure out just how we are going to pull this off.

So far, I've sold off a lot of my duplicates, so that's helping, and today I started cleaning out anything I could from my bedroom. I'm probably going to move a lot of the stuff I have in there to our empty rental house for a couple weeks just to get it out of the way, and then it'll be time to box up the old collection and move it somewhere out of the way.

The next post will be a final look at Room of Doom 2.5 and hopefully a look at the future Room of Doom 3.0 when it's all cleaned out.

Looking forward to the progress towards 3.0

Room of Doom 1.0........so familiar.

I've almost got my current bedroom empty. The plan right now is, to finish emptying it of everything except the large furniture (bed, dressers, and computer desk) then wash and paint the walls. Then I'll move the furniture from my bedroom into the current game room and then have the carpet put into the bedroom. And then I'll probably put my bed and a dresser back in there until both rooms are done. Then I can finally start taking stuff out of Room of Doom 2.5 and putting it in Room of Doom 3.0.

I still haven't figured out what color I want to paint the RoD3. Any suggestions?

@NES_Rules:No stupid colors that you get bored of quickly and/or hurt your eyes if you're in the room for a long time. So no black, bright red or any other fluorescent-ish color. I'd go with something simple, like light-beige. If you have painting skills you could then paint a couple of iconic video game characters on your wall in different colors, like pacman or the space invaders enemies, just a few, that would be awesome. Good luck with the painting! Smiley

@Sirgin: Yeah, definitely no bright colors. I'm probably going with some shade of off-white probably leaning toward the brown or green shades.
I have no artistic ability whatsoever, so no murals for me, but it would be awesome. I would love to have a life size Super Mario Bros level wrap around the room.

I went and got the paint today. I ended up going with "Mississippi Mud" for the game room. It's a nice light brown with a tint of green. As soon as I finish cleaning out the closet (taking out the remaining clothes and washing the walls) I'll be ready to paint.
I'll probably do another update tomorrow with pictures once I'm ready to paint.

Painting is all done. I've started putting some of the room back together, but I won't be able to start really setting up until after the carpet is installed some time this week.

@NES_Rules: That's great to hear, can't wait for the pictures. Smiley
