I'm sure most of you had heard about the newest codename for the upcoming Playstation console "Orbis." For those of you who haven't there are two big rumors associated with this new name. First off there will be zero backwards compatibility for Playstation 3 games. Secondly there will be a lock out for used games. Now, before I get started and go off the deep end, I will begin by stating that I have always been against Sony and everything they do. I find little to no pleasure in anything they do. They have repeatedly reminded me why I have always stuck by Nintendo throughtout the years. So if this comes across as a little coarse towards Sony, it's supposed to.

I'm confused. I always thought that Sony tried to keep up with the market. They've seemingly looked at all the things that made their competition successful and done the opposite. The numbers don't lie. The Wii is 100% backwards compatible with the GameCube, the Xbox 360 is about 80% backwards compatbile with the Xbox and the Playstation 3 is...well who knows? Some consoles are with PS1, some with PS2, some with Blu-Ray it's too much to figure out. And look at the numbers. Nintendo has a huge lead in sales while the PS3 is waaay behind. I'm not saying backwards compatibility is the reason for it, but it helps. I've heard some say they won't be buying a PS4 to play PS3 games. I get that. But why keep both consoles around. People seem to trade in their old consoles to get a price break on new ones. Why give up your PS3 if all those hundreds, if not thousands of dollars you spent on games are now useless? Heck backwards compatibility should be standard in this era. It's been done since the Game Boy Color! Every Nintendo handheld has been backwards compatibile with the previous and Nintendo is the industry leader.

As for used games...I don't even begin to comprehend it. I get that they're trying to kill GameStop. But considering they are the leader in game sales locking out your biggest distributor is a killer in and of itself. If GameStop stops selling their games and hardware, they are done. And they would alienate alot of the consumer base.

Call me a cynic, but I sort of hope these rumors come true. I will enjoy watching Sony crumble. I of course wouldn't be buying the console anyway, but for every one they sell I'm sure there are 5 people who boycott the system for these reasons. If either holds true for the new Xbox console, count me out on them too. I'd love to hear every one else's thoughts on this one though. Another review is coming soon too!

The Paystation Orbis huh? Tongue

I think you're looking at this the wrong way.  You're harping on how backwards compatibility is so important, yet the Wii is Nintendo's first console with that feature.  Not to mention the fact that GameCube, PS2, and Xbox are all dirt cheap enough to render the BC argument moot.  All PS3s are PS1 and Blu Ray capable, most are not PS2 compatible.  Personally, I'd rather Sony focus development time on the PS4, and waste no time adding in PS3 functionality.  Does it make more sense for them to linger in the past, or make sure the PS4 is as up-to-date as possible?

There is nothing to figure out when buying a PS3; they haven't been PS2 compatible for nearly 4 years, and they have no reason to be.  I bought a PS3 to play PS3 games, not PS2 games.  I have a PS2 for that. Just like I bought my Wii for Wii games, and when I get a 360, it will be for 360 games.  The backwards compatible argument is ridiculous.  Also, to nitpick, the DSi and DSiXL are not backwards compatible, but I still bought them because they provided a noticeable enhancement over the DS lite (Finding them for dirt cheap was also a factor Smiley).

Old consoles are cheap, and don't take up much room.  You also shouldn't let your hate of Sony detract you from experiencing one of the best gaming generations ever.  Although the Wii has its share of great games, it has only a fraction of what is available on the 360 and PS3.

Brand new games are dirt cheap nowadays.  I rarely ever buy a brand new game for over $15 unless I buy on launch day.  Sure, I completely agree it sucks that we won't be able to trade in games or let friends borrow them, but it certainly won't make gaming more expensive.  I don't agree with this practice at all, but I don't think I will avoid the next generation completely.  I'll just wait much later until I can get the consoles and numerous games for a fraction of the cost.

Another point; just because Nintendo has a massive sales lead doesn't mean it is a better console than the 360 or PS3.  Sure, it is potentially better for developers/publishers, but the Wii has always been the secondary console for me, only because I can't get Nintendo games anywhere else.  I'm willing to bet that the number of games sold for each PS3 and 360 is much higher than the number sold for the Wii.  How many people do you know with Wii that just collect dust?

I also don't think GameStop will stop carrying new games for a new Sony console.  GameStop only stands to lose massive profit potential there.  Sure the margins on new games are likely not much, but to cut off an entire revenue stream wouldn't make financial sense.

I used to only buy Nintendo consoles, but I realized that I was only missing out.  I want to play great games, and limiting myself to one manufacturer is only limiting the games I get to play.  I realize Sony has made some poor decisions, but so has Microsoft and Nintendo.  The bottom line is that they are business in business to make money.  They can't always please their audience when it isn't financially feasible.

I'd like you to know I'm not trying to flame you, just posting my opinions.  I love to hear what you think about my points.

Pay to Stay? Get it? Cheesy

Wow, you just got blcklblskt'd!!!

You have 14 games on Sony systems in your collection. A few of them are good, play them!

Its too early to go off on unsubstantiated rumors from Kotaku of places. They said the exact same thing about the PS3 and guess how many used games were locked out of it?

If there is any one of the 3 manufacturers to hate then go for Microsoft, I deal with their completely shoddy hardware engineering on a near daily basis. I consider it a god send when I'm working on non-MS systems, and I can get those caught up in a day or two. But I've been fixing red rings, disc trays, wireless receivers, too many things to list for every single model of 360 literally from day 1 of my new job with very few breaks.

99% of the gaming public doesn't care about BC capability after a year or so, and every single PS3 can play PS1 games. Since they already have the software emulation developed I would not be surprised at all to see it in Orbis, along with some form of PS2 software emulation if they actually stop manufacturing that magnificent system before the new one is released.

The hardware architecture of the PS3 is radically different and developing software emulation for it would be incredibly difficult since the Cell processor is unlike any other on the market, ever.

I don't see too much wrong with Sony's business practices, MS is by far the worst offender for anti-consumerist practices. Also the PS1 and PS2 are the two greatest disc based systems ever made, that is a fact. Tongue

Just wanted to add that I can't remember when I last saw a blog on RFG so blatently fanboy-ish. Are you 12 years old? I mean, really? Do you perhaps own Nintendo stock? I can't see another reason why you would care what companies wholly unrelated to you do? While you're sitting in your room being mad at the world, the rest of us are playing all great games on all systems.

Furthermore, there are always tons of rumors like this when consoles are first announced/leaked. 99% of these rumors are false and merely created to drive traffic to the sites that post them. Just a few weeks ago there was a rumor about how the Xbox 720 will be doing the exact same thing (no used games) and won't even have a disc drive! I highly doubt any of this is true.

I'm off to play some more Final Fantasy 7. A terrific game, on a Sony console, no less!

@Sirgin:FFVII..... gross

@Crabmaster2000: Lol. Smiley

I don't consider myself a fanboy (well, maybe of Halo, and Gears of War, and shmups, and Myst, and Halo Wars, and...shoot.) but a lack of BC and the 'Online Pass' taken to a bigger extreme does greatly diminish my interest in any console.  I have no doubt I will eventually own the set of new consoles, but I can honestly say that the current direction of gaming is making me very thankful that I have a retro collection.

If for no other reason, I like the idea of ownership, not leasing.  Sure, I don't mind buying a game new and supporting developers, but one day the server one has to access that unlocks the rest of the game will be shut down, and then even legit owners are out of luck.

@blcklabskt I'm actually excited to read your opinions. What I was driving at was not that backwards compatibility is the be all end all but just touching on the two biggest rumors out as of now. And while Nintendo's sales numbers for the Wii are kind of skewed, the software sales don't lie. The top selling Playstation 3 game in terms of copies sold new is Gran Turismo 5 which has sold 7.43 million copies. The second highest is Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which tops out at 5.34 million, making the combined sales of the two just under 13 million. The top selling first party games are Uncharted 2 & 3 at 3.9 million each. The top selling Xbox 360 game is Call of Duty: Black ops at 12 million and the top first party game is Halo 3 at 8.1 million. The top selling Wii game is MarioKart Wii which has sold 31.91 million and 2nd place is New Super Mario Bros. at 25+ million. I'm not including pack-in games or any that include extras such as Wii Play which had an extra Wii remote included or Wii Sports Resort which included the Wii Motion Plus. The numbers don't lie.

@sirpsycho The fact that there are 14 games in my Sony collection is kinda stretching the truth. 5 of them are sports games that exist on so I have something to play in my bedroom since the PS2 in my house ultimately is an expensive DVD player at this point. It was my wife's and became mine when I got married. And two of the games in my PS1 collection I only have because I played them on the PC originally and my laptop is my only functioning computer and it barely functions at that.

@Sirgin I actually agree with Crabmaster2000. Final Fantasy took a crap after VI. But that's just personal opinion. I'm sure it's a good game, just not for me. And it's less fan-boy posting then just what I know. That's what I grew up with and it's what I play. I intend on reviewing a different console's game in the near future.

Bottom line? Pre-official announcement rumors are usually the most false, and even a lot of the official ones are bunk. Patience is a virtue.

Haha I agree, I actually enjoyed reading those myself. I never realized there were similar rumors for the ps3 as well. I had no interest in the console so I never noticed. I appreciated the links as well, thanks.

I personally find the idea of a hardware company trying to "break" the used game market makes me just a bit sick.  Though of course, sirpsycho is right.  Remember the "all digital" rumor made the rounds prior to the PS3 release, and we all know how factual that turned out.  However, unlike seven or eight years ago when these rumors were making their rounds there was nothing on the market that could be used as an example.  Now in this modern age there is actual precedence for the rumor (the Online Pass).  If MS and/or Sony decides to go even 70% digital (as unlikely as it sounds) this would be a very easy thing to implement and enforce.  Plus, all the game publishers would love them for it.

I tell you, this may be the first gaming generation since the whole 3DO/CDi/Jaguar crapfest that I sit out entirely.  While I have fully embraced digital game distribution, the only two services that I patronize (Good Old Games and Steam) allow me to backup as I see fit, play on multiple computers with no fuss, and play games with no Internet connection (with only a few exceptions on Steam).  The console manufacturers have just want too much control over my purchased content to make me believe they could "do the right thing."

@Monkees:

The examples you used for the Wii are extremely rare cases though.  I was referring to the number of games sold per console.  Although Mario games and their ilk have moved immense amounts of software, they are far and away the exception.  Like I said in my first response, I truly believe the number of games per 360 or PS3 owner is far more than the number of games per Wii owner.

Again, sales number do not equal quality.  The games you listed for Wii are first party titles.  Very, very few third party developers have had anywhere near the success in software sales that Nintendo has had.  I think you will agree with me that there are more quality third party games on the PS3/360 than there are on the Wii, no?  Despite the PS3/360 not selling nearly as many consoles as the Wii, I think there is more than enough evidence to suggest that there are more "good" games to play on the aforementioned consoles over the Wii.

Granted, if you consider gobs of mini games and a slew of dancing games as "good" games, then the Wii is obviously best in that respect.

@monkees19: You speak of sales numbers as a way of proving that Sony sucks? How is that even relevant. With your blind Sony hate you probably liked the GameCube a lot more than the PS2 and the PS2 sold a lot more games. So what's your point?

@monkees19: I wasnt implying that FFVII onward sucks, just VII in particular. IX is one of my favorite games of all time and I was one of the few that enjoyed XIII and X-2.

If you want to compare sales numbers you should probably use a much larger sample than the top 2-3 selling games on a system (you seemed to have missed the last 3 CoD on PS3 selling 9-11million worldwide?).

Wii - 133 million+ sellers (including pack ins) [537,000,000+ pieces of software]
PS3 - 136 million + sellers (including pack ins) [330,000,000+ pieces of software]
360 - 143 million + sellers (including pack ins) [407,000,000+ pieces of software]

The PS3 isnt quite moving software as well as the other 2, but its definitely holding its own. If you ask me, sales-wise, no one seems to be hurting this generation.

@Crabmaster2000: Of course FF7 onwards sucks, they're on Sony consoles! How could they not?! Wink

FF9 is my favorite FF as well (of the ones I've played) but so far I'm enjoying FF7 a lot and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it.

@Sirgin: Your face is wrong with it!!!

Clearly my post reads as more hate driven...I certainly didn't want it to come across as harsh but I stand by it. As for the game sales numbers I was only using examples. But I digress...I just hope that these rumors aren't true for future ps4 owners' sakes. It'd be a shame for some to have to give up their ps3 games or risk having to pay for them twice, as in digital downloads...and we know how I feel about those...

And yes, I liked the GameCube more lol

@monkees19: Why would anyone have to "give up" their PS3 games? People that own PS3 games tend to own a PS3 as well, so what's the problem?

The Wii is the first Nintendo console (I said console, NOT handheld) that is backwards compatible. Were you mad when the GameCube didnt play N64 games and did you "give up" your N64 games because of that?

I meant the people who would have normally traded in their old console towards a new one are out of luck. And I cannot say how I would've felt back then. I did not get either console at launch as I was sort of young at the time. But that's a bit of moot point since there was a change in medium in terms of how the content was delivered. I could only imagine the cost of trying to deliver a console with disc and cartridge capabilities.

@monkees19: The people who "trade in" their old console for a new one don't care about their old games. Trust me.

I just knew this was gonna happen Tongue
