I've got a friend from high school who has always loved adventure games.  Mainly the Lucas Arts adventure games, Monkey Island and that ilk.  As it turns out every year he gets an itch to play The Dig.  Said itch is currently in the process of getting scratched.

Many moons ago he let me borrow this game, but my computer was to slow to run it.  I never got around to playing it.  Plus I am atrocious at adventure games.  So my friend, in the spirit of old fashioned competition, issued the following challenge:

Complete "The Dig"  the way we used to play video games before the internet.  No cheats, no FAQS, and no help from him or anyone else.  Well GAME ON!  I'll keep this blog updated as I progress through the game/pull my hair out in frustration.

I think its only fair I issue a counter challenge to him.  I'll decide on that in the next few days.  I've a couple ideas already.  Turns out his main motivation for the challenge is to see how long it takes me to complete the game.  Knowing my inherent lack of ability when it comes to adventure games, I will be following this theme in my blog for the next couple of decades.

Wish me luck!  I'm gonna need it.

neat idea. I'm looking forward to hearing your progress!!

I love the idea of anti-faq gaming since that's how I grew up playing... though it's easier said than done.

I ALWAYS make sure my first playthrough of a game is done faq-less. No exceptions. If it was good enough to warrant a second playthrough then I sometimes check faqs for those obscure items or unlockables I missed. I find it really takes a lot of the enjoyment out of the game because instead of focusing on the game (and actually becoming drawn into the fantasy world) I focus to much on the faq and it ruins the experience for me.

yeah. I'm trying to get back to faq-less. I don't rely on them much now. But if I'm stuck for too long then I tend to give in. But like I said, it was a lot funner pre-internet, even if it was more aggravating.

Seems like a cool idea. Your friend won't have any problem playing the game if he has done so every year. He could probably do it blindfolded. Tongue

@Sirgin:  Yeah my friend has beat the game yesterday.  I think it took him a total of 3 days.  Its me i'm worried about.  I've never played it.  Plus Watching me meander through an adventure game is like watching Keanu Reeves give a reenactment of the Gettysburg address.

Awesome idea. I'm playing Persona 3 right now and sad to say I have an FAQ open the entire game for social links. When it comes to boss battles though I come up with my own tactics and stuff which is where most people would use an FAQ. I just want to max out social links. My second playthrough of the game I'll definitely just respond to people however I see fit.

But yeah I love the idea of no guides. I frequent a Super Metroid board and it always disheartens me when people ask for help saying they've looked at the maps and stuff. It annoys the regulars of the board because that's not how the game is meant to be played. We tend to just give vague hints to lead them in the right direction instead of straight up telling them the answer.

Also, for your counter gaming challenge I recommend Grim Fandango (assuming he hasn't played it).

@yassassass:  I'll keep Grim Fandango in mind.  I'm thinking of something that will get him out of his comfort zone a little.  He doesn't like a lot of games because he doesn't feel skilled enough to play them.  So i'm thinking that has some button mashing but a heavy story element to it.

On a side note he was freaking awesome at killer instinct.

Longest it has ever taken me to complete a game was half a year. It was Shining Wisdom, bloody Sand Labyrinth had me stuck for oh so long. I have to say I think walkthroughs suck and that the internet truly does bring about the best and worse of everything.
