The time is around 1:30 this morning, I sat up in my room playing The legend of zelda: Link's awakening on my SNES's super gameboy, The light hum of an air conditioner in the background, every other mutant in the house fast asleep.
I went to go get some more kool-aid, when I happened to stumble upon a comic book. Eastman and laird's Teenage mutant ninja turtles adventures no. 7, I'd take a look if you happen to have a copy laying around.
I realized I haven't read this one, I pick it up and read decide to take a looksie.
It started off explaining the last few comics, but than completely cut-off.
The turtles were some how transported onto a meteorite by a cow that can talk and a capitalist tree-stump. They forced the turtles to wear ridiculous costumes and fight some dog with 4 arms. There was another fight going on, which, for no apparent reason at all, brought back leatherhead, a baddie that we thought was dead.
So the turtles win of course, the cow takes them back to there own place. Think you've heard enough bull-shit already? I think not.
The cow took them into New york, but it was flooded. The cow says "Uh-oh, I didn't take you back to your right time..."
He than goes onto say that this is 100 years in the future, and its because of Ice caps melting and global warming. Michelangelo declares that he doesn't like this future, and wants to go back to his own time. The cow says this is one of many possible futures, and "only they we can change it" He proceeds to take the turtles along there merry way back to 1980's New york.
WTF??? What a line of liberal propaganda. If I wanted to be brainwashed, I'd read some of Al gore's books, not a TMNT comic. Seriously, I didn't know that people even believed this kind of bull-shit back in 1989.

Heh heh. GLOBAL WARMING & WWIII FTW!!

Scientists found the hole in the Ozone layer caused by pollution in the 1950's. Most schools around the world have been teaching about the human causes of global warning since the 70's. Except the poor Americans, whose government likes to shape the educational system by denying or not releasing the same info the rest of the world has been embracing.
Do you think 181 countries signed the Kyoto Protocol because of bullshit propaganda? Every cartoon and most every comic covers social and world issues in a subtle way. Whether it's "sharing with your friends", "brushing your teeth daily" or "combating global warming", literature has been used for centuries to fill in the moral gaps of one's education. What better way to send a message out to a generation of young children then through their childhood heroes in a half-shell?

Sorry, but yeah, they were teaching me this stuff in schools through the 80s and 90s too. I'm surprised they didn't also mention that the world would be carpeted in garbage in addition to the rising sea levels, flooding, scorching UV rays, and smog covered skylines. Granted global warming has been recognized for a long time... I just think its BS that people recently started acting like they cared. It only seems like a trend now.... a fad. Even all the alternative energies companies claim to be preoducing account for only a small percentage of energy production. It is also BS that Al Gore gets all the credit for something thousands of real scientists have been working towards for decades.

@OatBob: I BELIEVED IN GLOBAL WARMING BEFORE IT WAS COOL!!!
Ben, Al Gore invented global warming...just like he invented the internet.

as a huge tmnt fan, just wanted to point out that the archie brand of TMNT comics held many enviromental messages, they even did mini specials like "TMNT meet the Conservation Corps" etc. Also Peter Laird is very left wing liberal and he isn't afraid to write letters proving that in the newer books.

@OatBob:
People don't seem to realize that the threat of global warming is not that we're all going to melt as the sun asplodes the planet, it's that enough fresh water will enter the Oceans and shut down thermohaline circulation in the arctic which would result in a sudden massive cooling of the planet. This has happened before (the Younger Dryas), and exists as proof of the planet's ability to right itself once it reaches an extreme.
I took a course last year on Global Warming, and as far as the human element is concerned it can only be hypothesized what will happen. Looking at the large scale of things, compared to the temperature changes and carbon levels that have been found through ice core samples, if you looked at one of the temperature charts they showed us it is almost ludicrous to even argue that we, as mankind, exist. There is the possibility we are going to tip the scales, people argue that we are at the end of a warming period but rather than cooling down we are entering another one, and that our pollution is the cause. Maybe, but there is such a margin for error and such impossibility to predict factors such as solar activity that it could simply be that the current warming period is simply not done yet. Only time will tell.
For things to worry about now I'd suggest the water shortage that's starting in the American west...before you know it it'll be like Road Warrior as people are fighting for water and gas.
