The Adventure of the Mega CD collectorThe Adventure of the Mega CD collector

Today is a day of sadness, but not emo, as I lose my chance of getting two very rare games to add to my collection. To help me explain, I will use comics made by me in the form of the style of Ben "Yahtzee" Crowshaw (Zero Punctuation, EscapistMagazine.com).

When I was looking through eBay to see what I could buy, I noticed two very good and rare titles, one you will know it's rare, the other...? Well you need to know the history and be European to understand. That latter one was "The Lawnmower Man" the game based of the classic 80s film. In Europe, it did get a release, but because of region coding issues it was recalled, but was never rereleased, meaning non recalled copies are quite collectable. I saw one that had no bids, so I placed a 10 bid, and through the days the auction went on there were no competing bids.

The other game is one you'll definitely know, SNATCHER. The god damn game that isn't as rare but because it's demanding people sell it for donkeys nowadays! But when I saw one with no bids and a starting price of 99p, this was my reaction.

and after I placed the 10 which I increased to 40 (it was just for safety) I was glad

That one did get a 27 rival bid about 3 days into the auction, but no other bids.

Until yesterday, I was going with my family to London, and I made a fatal mistake, I didn't increase the bids. When I came back and checked eBay, both auctions ended, and this was what happened

Yep, as soon as I was outbidded on Snatcher, there was a minor bidding war, and on Lawnmower Man, I was out bid at the last hour by 50p. Even though I shouldn't take Video Game Collecting seriously, I was still hurt. Sure I expected to be out bidded on Snatcher, but on Lawnmower Man? Damn. I think I've learned my lesson. I need to keep more of an eye on auctions and chances, and when I'm not take precautions. Well right now schools back and I've got time to pay attention to eBay as I make sure I keep an eBay page open when I go on the internet (and go to the doctors at some point, lol, just kidding).

So until my next page in my adventure, see you later!

Wow, with the price Snatcher went for I'm so glad I still have my copy of the game.
Then again I can understand the price, I mean it is THE BEST GAME EVER after all.

JESUS thats absolutely insane.

Would a US copy of Snatcher go for that kind of price on eBay UK?
If so i bet i could scrounge one up Smiley

Sucks about losing by such a small amount too.
Happens to me quite frequently. :-/

Ouch, bad luck. Sad

The only way to prevent being out bid like that is not trying to buy rare games on eBay I guess. There's always some rich guy out there whose in desperate need of the game you're bidding on. Wink

Honestly as a fellow Ebayer take it from me the way your bidding is really not helping you out at all. Stop bidding on items days before hand your only increasing the price that little more and also setting yourself up to get snipped like you did.

Reasons why you do not pre-bid early
-Increases auction price for no reason at all, if its at 0.99 and 0 bids just watch it no need to be first the auction wont go away
-Allows other users to "test" your bid and again could artificially inflate the price, also they might notice patterns in your bidding that can be used against you.

What you should do
-Set a budget for the item and hold to it, do not get caught up in bidding wars of emotion
-Put the item in your Watch List and take note when it ends
-Try to bid as late as you can, even better if you can be there for the closing.

There are some other Ebay tricks I use to help my chances out as others who Ebay often might have similar tricks or things they find work. I have to missed out on auctions which always sucks but in the future help yourself out and save your wallet some cash hopefully Wink

you should never bid.....buy immediately! you know...if you can

@Zenki:"-Try to bid as late as you can, even better if you can be there for the closing."

I know you're right, but I find it so annoying when people do that. Tongue

@Zenki:
I know i have tested peoples limits on quite a few items.
Constantly do minimum bids find out when you have the new high one then the same person comes back and bids it up a little more. If it is something i really want and i can't have it i am at least going to make them pay for it.

Picked up a Mortal Kombat game for 20$ shipped that i had gotten into a bid war for and drove the price up to around 100+ shipping.

@Izret101:Did you win that MK game?

No someone who dare challenged the amazingness that is me won the 130ish shipped copy and i about a week later won a 20$ shipped copy.
