So in talking with a coworker recently, I realized how unique our hobby really is.  As gamers we use our spare time to become characters in another world.  Sure there is some of that in a book or movie, but that is a linear story, and there is nothing wrong with that, I love stories.

Like I said, I was talking with my coworker who is a gamer this morning about the new Front Mission and about my experience with Dogfighter the last couple times and it really struck me that our hobby is really unique.  Most of my coworkers go home, watch sports or the news, play with their kids, and thats it.  Done.  I was recently placed in the middle of two other teams for crosstraining purposes and out of the thirty people, that is what 27 of them do daily.  Well last night I piloted an aircraft (Dogfighter) and later drove a 37 ton robot around a battlefield trying to rid my planet of hostile forces (Mechwarrior 3).  The night before I was on a quest to save some princesses (Castle Crashers).  So when one of my new coworkers asked me this morning what I did last night what did I tell them?  I said that last night I was trying to figure out why a utopia fell to madness (Bioshock).

Ofcourse this is a common thought among the gaming population, but when you sit down and think about it, we really do have a magical hobby.

And yes, I know I am late on the Bioshock wagon  shut up.  I was a Wrenchlord of the Deep.

last night I was a three-headed dragon who ultimately had to destroy a much larger mechanized version of myself.

Last night I united an underground resistance and overthrew our totalitarian dictators, defeating an army of Thomas the Tank Engines, Batman, and a few Battlemechs.  Then it was bath time and my kids had to put up the toys.

I love the wonder of interactive media and video games are by far my favorite hobby.  I just hope we don't forget to bring our imaginations to other activities. Smiley

last night I was the ruler of europe (Empire: Total War) followed by being a hedgehog with ADD (sonic & knuckles).

I think its interesting to note the difference between us, meaning those of us on this site and the majority of "gamers" now a days. For example I hear coworkers and managers talk about the last nights events on madden and COD at work everyday, but if I mention anything older than the current generation (Rush 2049 for example) Im looked at like ive just talked about Bing Crosby's newest hit.

Last night I was wandering a seemingly abandoned suburban neighborhood, going from house to house and exploring.  Every house had their televisions tuned to different horror movies, and in each house, there was something very creepy about the shapes of the rooms...

Then I had a conversation with a work mate about how much I love scary games.  The weird part?  I am self-employed and have no co-workers.  Man, I really need to get a second job...

Yeah last nite, let's see, I was a rallycross champion framed for a recent zombie outbreak, making insane weapons in a mall crowded with said zombies...I bet you can guess what game that is (dead rising 2 for those who just don't know).    Also I was an alien trying to protect my interests on earth from rival casinos (Destroy all humans path of the furon).  Great stuff, and although I was only on my ps3, i can't count how many times I break out the ol' saturn, or dreamcast, and though not old, my wii is def my secondary of the modern gen consoles.  Come to think of it, I should probably get on my PC cuz I have not been playing that much lately and it's easily my most powerful gaming machine....

Last night, I was piloting a massive battlemech trying to find out what an evil organization is doing and why. While doing so I have destroyed countless other mechs, a giant mechanical spider, and squashed a couple hundred infantry. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about Mechassault 2, great stuff.
