Show Some Love

Tonight I took on The Little Mermaid. It was my first time playing it and it was obviously made for a very young crowd. The levels are painfully short and the bosses are ridiculously easy. My video from start to finish is about 15 minutes long. Lots of the games based on similar properties at the time are fairly decent games, but this one is just sad.

I thought I had figured out a work around for my sprite issues, but unfortunately I have not. I found a couple programs that will read my capture hardware and show the sprites that are abscent from my current software, but the game lags severely on each one making it impossible to progress.  Grrrrr. I really dont want to have to resort to my VCR since all the VHS tapes I have left seem to be in pretty poor shape. But I may have to. I might have to splurge and see if I cant find some brand new VHS tapes for order online.

Some of you may have seen my post a while back asking for assistance with a King of Fighters XIII Tournament that is coming up locally. Well my copy of KoF XII finally arrived yesterday. I was hoping it would have been here a week earlier, but Canadapost took its sweet ass time. Luckily (as far as my KoF training goes) my wife and son took off for the next 3 days to visit some family. That means I can eat and sleep KoF until they return!

I've only got until the 26th or November to get myself whipped into shape for this thing. The two biggest hurtles are going to be 1)getting familiar with competitive fighting games again, and 2)learning how to use the standard 360 pad for this kind of game.

To get used to KoF I'm going to be spending a butt-load of time playing it (obviously), but I'll also be digging through fighting forums for tips and advice, both for playing the game and for how to approach tournament style play. Because of my locaction and that its not really being advertised well, I'm not expecting to many strong challengers. But being as rusty as I am at versus fighting I'm not going to slack off. I have a lot of room to improve right now.

So right now I've got KoF XII on the 360. I'm going to play it a lot until XIII comes out on the 22nd (which I've pre-ordered now), when I'll swap over to the actual game that is going to be played at the tournament. When I pick up XIII I will literally be spending every second of free time I've got over the days up to the 26th learning the game as much as I possibly can in that time.

I'm also going to break down and purchase a month of Xbox Live so I can get used to fighting strangers, skilled players, and different characters.

This morning I spent some hours in practice mode getting a feel for each and every character. I also took into account which characters are generally known as higher-tier picks for fans of the series. I was able to widdle my possible team down to 4 characters, so I still need to cut one out. I came up with: Kyo, Robert, Joe, Goro.

I'm really leaning towards Kyo and Robert so the big decision is wether to cut Joe or Goro from the roster.

Luckily KoF only uses a 4 button combat system. This makes the 360 pad much more bearable than it would have been for any game using the triggers. The D-pad will now be my biggest learning curve. I love D-pads, but the 360 has one of the worst I've ever used .

Spent some time exploring The Jetsons game for the first time tonight. The controls took a long time to get used to. If you tap the opposite direction that your facing quickly you wont actually turn around, which means if your not fully turned your jumping ability is greatly diminished. It was really annoying in several different areas. After getting the hang of a few basics I started making decent progress, however there were 2 parts in the middle of the game that took, much longer than they should have. Eventually I was able to make my way to the end. The game should be about 30 mintues to complete, but since it was my first playthrough it took me just over 2 hours. Nothing to really write home about. If your looking for a new platformer you can do better for cheaper.

Had a little time and was going to start Snow Brothers, but I was having missing sprite issues right off the bat and had a couple other things to take care of, so I only had time to cross 1 game off my list tonight. My in-laws are leaving tomorrow morning so things will get back to normal very soon.

I was finally able to fullfill my childhood goal of beating Tiny Toon Adventures!! Its one of the games I played the most in my pre teen life. I have lots of memories of getting to the final stage, but had to much difficulty climbing the corridor with the missile launchers. I was able to make fairly quick work of everything tongiht though. What took me dozens upon dozen of hours to fail at as a child took me less than an hour to conquer tonight. Still a fun game and something I'll come back to from time to time.

Tried out some Tiny Toon Adventures 2 afterwards. I was able to beat all 4 rides and gain access to the fun house with quite a bit of difficulty. The roller coaster and bumber cars were very frustrating. After spending way to long figuring out the fun house I decided I needed a break. Came back to the game after a while and thought it would be more enjoyable to skip the roller coaster and bumber cars this time around. So I loaded up on tickets by beating the Train level over and over. Its going to be one of the most boring videos because of that I'm sure. Dominated the fun house though and the last boss was super duper easy.

This is one of the few times when my future plans were made a reality. I started the night off with Roller Games. Its a surprisingly fun game. Its like a fast paced beat em up, with some levels having a strong focus on platforming or dodging obstacles. Out of all the games for this challenge that I wasnt familiar with so far, this one is probably my favorite. The last couple levels have some pretty challenging platforming parts, but they are not broken just challenging. And unlimited continues makes it not so bad either. A person could easily beat the game in less than 30 minutes, but because of all my deaths in the last 2 levels it took me just over an hour.

Stuck in some Widget next. I've been looking forward to checking this game out for a long time now. It was pretty disapointing. Its not that its bad, its just so mediocre in every way. Plus for an alien he has the worst weapon ever, even when its at full power. Before its at full power it might as well be a knife instead of a gun. It took several tries to figure out how to proceed. After the first stage your given the option to choose the next 3 levels in any order. Problem is that you need to complete some stages before others in order to unlock new abilities to help you traverse specific stages. After a little trial and error I was able to figure out the route and get moving. The game is super short and fairly easy when you know what to do.

Still need a new free screen capture program if anyone is aware of a decent one. I dont need anything fancy, just something that will reliably capture a specific region. Or even a whole screen and then allow me to crop it afterwards.

Went for the Joker's throat right away tonight. His other minions didnt put up much of a fight, but the Joker himself gave me a good run for my money. About half the video is going to be me replaying the last level and dying to the Joker. At least theres some awesome tunes in that level.

Followed that up with the unusual game Circus Caper. Tim has to rescue his sister from the evil hordes of carnival employees. And I do mean hordes. The sky basically splits open and spews forth demonic carnies from start to end. As long as you get to each boss with a decent arsenal of secondary weapons they are all pushovers though. Plus health drops are fairly abundant. The game seems a lot harder than it is at first.

With the circus in flames behind me I decided to tear up the streets with some inline skates. Roller Games is a lot of fun and something that I've over looked for a long time. Got to stage 5 fairly easily and spent the rest of my time dying and retrying it. It seems to be the last stage so I'm going to go hard on it tomorrow night and see it I cant knock this one off my list as well. Check it out if you havnt played it yet. Its a lot of fun.

I gave my screen capture another try tonight and give up. Please let me know if your aware of a decent, free screen capture software I could use to replace Greenshot. I'd really like to keep including the end screens in these blogs.

Sorry for the long time off. I took some vacation time that I needed to use up before I lost it and part way through that time my inlaws came in (and are still in) for a surprise visit. My game time is usually significantly lower when I'm at home, but with my inlaws around it was nearly non-existant. I'm back to work now and that means I'm also back to gaming.

For the first few days I put any spare time I had into Dr. Mario. I was expecting a quick victory. My goal was to beat level 24 on medium speed. 24 was the number to beat because the game loops back to 24 after its been beaten. I thought I had done this in the past quite easily, but in retrospect the speed was most likely on slow. Medium proved to be quite challenging and took many many failed attempts to overcome.

I wanted something easier afterwards so I put in one of my all time favorites, Bubble Bobble. Its not that the game is super easy, its just that with the infinite continues combined with very short levels, even the hard parts can be fun. Forgot how long it would take me and has to split it into two parts. Not a problem with the handy password system.

Followed that up with a childhood fav. MC Kids. Its a great little platformer that adds a bit of flare to the standard run to the end formula. Each level has 1 to 2 M cards hidden in it and your job is to track down enough relevant ones to move along to the next area. Its got some very interesting levels through out it and even gets fairly challenging near the end.

My screenshot program seems to be giving me a lot of problems lately (like on Bonk's Adventure). Can anyone recommend a good free program to replace Greenshot, which is what I'm currently using?

I've had a few more issues with some sprites not showing up in games over the last few days. Luckily I've got Bickman2k on the job and he's been helping me working through it. I think were getting close to figuring it out.

I didnt however manage to find a few games to fill the void until that gets done. Started off with some Bonk's Adventure. I've beaten this game on my TG16 a while back, but this was my first try on the NES. The controls felt a little looser than I would have liked, but not game breakingly bad. I managed to limp my way through the entire thing on my first try. I was a little worried I wasnt going to make it at the start, but after figuring out a couple of the bonus games I was able to rack up a safe amount of extra men.

I had a few games out while I was trying to decide what was next and my son wanted to see Panic Restaurant so we gave it a go. As far as time spent playing compared to money spent this has to be the worst of the expensive NES games. I finished it in just over 30 minutes with very little trouble. My son played it for a bit afterwards though too and I think he is a fan, just because most of the enemies and weapons are funny to him.

Thought I may as well cross another rarity off the list and popped in some Bubble Bobble 2. Its a decent game, but I feel the first one is significantly better. I was getting low on lives as I neared the end of the game and lucked out with an item (some kind of star wand) that warped me to the second last boss fight. Because of that I was able to finish the game with no continues!

Tried staring the night with some Ninja Gaiden II and wasnt able to see my secondary weapons. If I picked up the powerup that give you an orange clone ninja thing though I could see that guy only when I took damage and dissapeared from the screen. It was interesting. I figured NGIII would have a similar issue so I just jumped to another game. Any ideas on how to get around this problem? I can use my VCR, but I'd much rather do my playing on the computer since it saves me a step and has better quality results.

Spent a lot of time playing Dr. Mario after that. I know the game loops at stage 24 so my goal is to conquer stage 24 on medium. Made it to stage 23 a few times, but couldnt quite get by. Sucks since if you lose your back to stage 20.

Took a break and played a couple hours (yes hours) of Where's Waldo?. I'm quite happy to say that, like Jaws, I'll never have to play it again!! I noticed I was getting better and better at finding him so I didnt want to quit playing and have to get used to looking for his blurry, pixelated, little ass again. Luckily the hardest stage by far to find him was the second one so whenever I screwed up it was easy to reset. There were 3 mini-games that broke up the 5 searching areas. The first mini-game in the cave was super easy, but the clock you pick up randomly adds or subtracts 1 minute from the 7 minutes I had to complete the game. If it subtracted it basically meant game-over. The second mini-game was the most interesting and most frustrating. You have to navigate a small maze and collect, Waldo and his Glasses and then escape. If you touch the Evil Waldo-ish thing your time plummets so fast that there is no hope for recovery even if you only graze it for a second. It was fun figuring out how to navigate the maze, but losing time to your Evil self was much to harsh. I'm sure you'll agree that its the most exciting video I'll ever post though!

Started the night off right by killing Jaws. It still took me several tries to stab the big jerk, but I eventually did it. I think the trick was to wait for him to be moving away from you when you get him to jump out. Thats the only thing I can think of because I'm pretty sure all my previous attempts were with him charging me. Whatever the method was, I'll never have to use it again Smiley

Thought I'd sink my teeth into some Ninja Gaiden after that. Spent about 1 and a half hours playing and getting my ass handed to me by Jaquimo's (I dont remember if I spelt that correctly) second form. Took a break and did some work (I actually have to do that once and a while:P) Came back and had a much better run. Still took a few tries more than I would have liked, but I really cant complain to much.

Lots of game playing tonight. More than usual if you can believe that.

Sarted it off with one of my childhood favorites, World Games. This one isnt exactly hard playing to beat since its mainly a versus game. My goal was to get the first place record in each event. I expected to have a little trouble with the Log Rolling and Sumo Wrestling, but to my surprise I got both of those records on my first attempt. Also to my surprise 3 events that I thought I'd ace right away took me several attempts each: Barrel Jumping, Slalom Skiing and Caber Toss. Barrel Jumping and Caber Toss used to be my best events so that was very unusual. Got it done though and even scored my first 99 (I think that is a perfect score!) on the cliff diving.

Followed up with some Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular. This was another one I played a bit as a kid. My goal was to get a medal. I ended up with a bronze medal, which for this challenge was good enough for me. The Pizza Walk and River Jump are both really annoying events so I basically had to do very well on every other event. If I could figure out how to score some points on either of those 2, I dont think a Gold Medal would be to hard.

Caveman Games! It just dawned on me that I must have really liked these ridiculous sports compilations since I played this one as a kid also. The events in this one are really goofy. Mate-Toss is probably my favorite, although Fire Making and Saber Race are also a lot of fun. Like World Games my goal was to get first in each event. Unfortunately there is no way to view all the records at once like on WG so you'll just have to take me word for it until the video goes up.

Followed up with some DK Classics. Just ran through one loop each of DK and DK Jr. That was enough to beat the default score and see all the levels. Quick and easy.

Next I tried to play some Dr.Mario and was doing very well, but then the game suddenly froze and gave me a little trouble when I went to start it again. I'll have to clean the contacts again before I give it another go.

Tried some Where's Waldo expecting another super quick victory. Turns out this game is hard as hell. I keep running out of time on the second level (of 8 I think). I did make it to the fourth area once, but that was only once. The graphics are so bad its really hard to find that jerk. Anyone have any tips for this gem?

Finished up with a lovely session of Jaws. I hate it. After finally figuring out what to do I had 4 chances to finish him off in the final battle and blew every time. You get 3 tries at it each time you get to him so I couldnt hit the damn giant shark even once out of 12 tries. It'll be a really short video when I finally figure out where exactly I'm supposed to stab him.

Started off the night with some Sky Shark and after exploding randomly several times it became quite obvious that I wasnt seeing many of the enemy bullets. I'll be resorting to my trusty VCR once again. I really need to pick up a better quality tape though, because my run of Metal Storm which I recorded the same way was pretty crappy quality.

Luckily I brought a few extra games along with me. Tried out some BreakThru on Tynstars advice. And what good advice it was. I would have been pissed had I payed full price for it when it was new. You are seeing my first play through of the game on the recording (aside from the 2 minutes I tested it after cleaning). Took me 30 minutes to complete, and part way through the game I realized how to use the jump more efficiently and could have dropped the time even more had I discovered that earlier.

Next up to bat was Commando. Unlimited continues meant it was just a matter of time and patience. It was a little rough at times, but I was able to finish it off it just under an hour. Stage 3 and 4 were both a bit of a pain, but with as many tries as I wanted I eventually eked my way through.

Last up tonight was Guerrilla War. Because of how the continue system was setup, start exactly were you dropped, this one was also a cake walk. After a bit I just started zooming through and taking full advantage of that system. Its probably one of the least interesting videos to watch since its just me running in a straight line and dying a lot.

Tried to slate my thirst for shooting tonight with some Legendary Wings. I thought it would be a quick 2-3 tries, hour and a half tops, kind of game. Turns out it wasnt Sad I forgot about the stupid glitch where you can get stuck in the walls and die (happens when you pick up a weapon upgrade or get hit by an enemy). That happened to me on two very promising runs. After way to many resets I was finally able to land a video of me finishing the game. Apparently all that practice payed off though since I was able to finish with a no death run. The game had very little dialogue, yet they managed to have a spelling error in nearly every single screen with words. Very amusing.

As suggested previously I spent my last few gaming sessions attacking Krang, Shredder and their gang. First attempt at TMNT 2 lead to an honorable defeat at the hands of Krang. The run helped me get familiar with the bosses, challenging areas and master Donatello's special attack. This made my next attempt much easier. I made a few mistakes, but still was almost able to beat the game without using a continue. I messed up very late in the game and had to use 1 though. The run seems very fluky since I beat about half the bosses with only 1 hit left (including Shredder), which was awesome since you start the next area with a full health bar! I've beaten this game before with my brother, but never by my self. Its a bit harder playing solo.

Next came TMNT 3. After playing 2 so recently I really had to adjust my play style. Spamming the special move and jump kick got me through 2 almost entirely. 3 however made the jump kick much weaker, and often got me punched for even trying to attempt it. And though the special moves were awesome, they cost a health, unlike 2 so I had to use them sparingly. The good news was that if you were on your last health you could spam your special as long as you wanted until you got hit again. It was also nice to be able to swap turtles with each death, instead of each continue. They each have a different special that comes in handy on certain bosses. While Donatello is my favorite and I wanted to use him, Leonardo's special was much better on most bosses, so most of the run is with him. It was a nail biter and I beat Super Shredder with about 2 hits left on my last continue, but this also marks the first time I've ever finished this game too.

I've officially caught up on my uploading backlog so now I just have to keep up with games as I finish them. Anyone know what the maximum length or size is that I can upload to youtube? I put a 2 hour Blaster Master video on there and didnt seem to have an issue. Wondering if I can hit the 5-6 hour mark for some future titles.

I checked out the video Shadow recommended (there were 2 actually) and neither of them were going to help me get past this Crab very easily. So I decided to do it the slowest method, which was to get my gun maxed out and slowly make my way to him trying my darnedest not to get hit. Unfortunately my full gun meter (8 bars I think) was only 3 bars full when I reached the boss. Not exactly as I had planned it. Somehow I managed to beat him without taking any damage though. Just took a loooooong boring time. Forgot where to go after that part and ended up doing a bit of exploring in the last 3 areas. So the video is going to be a long longer than it could have been.

Since we've been tossing around the idea of a commentary I gave it a practice run tonight and literally talked to myself the entire time I played Blaster Master. About 2 and a half hours. I'm still not convinced that I'm amusing enough to make it interesting, but I'll let you guys give me some feedback when I get it up and running and then I can go from there.

To follow up Blaster Master I played some TMNT 2. Did decently, but ultimately died to Krang near the end. Having refreshed myself on several challenging parts now, I should have no problems on my next run.
