Another update and another Baseball season under my belt!
First game this time was Rocket Ranger, and it was an unusual one. Started off as a simulation game where you move spies across a world map. These spies are searching for rocket parts, fuel, your captured scientists and enemy bases. Occasionally your spies get killed, but when they succeed missions start becoming available. The missions are all over the place from one on one combat, to bombing enemy tanks to sniping from the bushes. The point of the game is to obtain each of the 5 rocket parts to build a rocket, stockpile enough fuel for a trip in your rocket to the moon, then defeat the would be alien overlord. The game has a lot of good ideas, but unfortunately the gameplay isnt great in most areas. Enjoy this sexy end screen!

Since no one else seemed to want to tackle another long baseball game I took to conquering Roger Clemens MVP Baseball. It was similar to Bases Loaded in that once you figured out a few tricks its just a matter of time.......41 games worth to be precise.

Lastly was Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure. Contrary to the title it really wasn't that "excellent". Tons of aimless wandering as you look around for hidden items in which you have to return to randomly placed historical figures. At first you only have to return one item to one historical dude, but as you progress you have to match 2 and then 3. The worst part of the game is the men running after you constantly in each level who throw you in prison with just a touch. It takes a long time to travel to some areas of the map so its pretty annoying to get thrown in jail as you're nearing your destination. At least your are treated to a pretty rocking Wyld Stallions concert for your trouble

Future Plans - Destination Earthstar and Days of Thunder are both on deck right now. Really running out of options.
The genres are all over the place this week!
If you've followed my blog for the last couple months you may have noticed me mention the game Thunder & Lightning a couple times in my future plans. If you're not familiar with the game its an Arkanoid clone. A pretty good one though. I played it several times before my surgery and got the either the last level or second last level 5 times and then failed. One such run was particularly frustrating as I got to the last level with 5 extra men, which should have been more than enough to finish it off. All I needed was pretty much any item except the missile. Literally any other item would have been helpful (some more so than others, obviously) except that one. Well with my 5 lives I was able to obtain 5 missiles before dying. Its very rare that I get the same item twice in a row, so 5 was devastating.
When I was recovering from surgery at home I gave the game a try on our 42" Flatscreen and was finding it much more difficult to play for some reason. So it got shelved until I returned to work this past week. With all of the above in my mind I was determined to finally beat it even if it meant playing it safe (or being cheap some might say :p). There are 3 levels that have new blocks spawning and if you can clear out enough of the blocks and keep them at a manageable level you could play the same level for as long as you want. By doing this I spent probably about 1-1.5 hours farming 1UPs between these 3 levels in order to ensure my victory. Doesn't make for the most exciting video, but I'm still happy to be able to cross it off my list! And after all that I was treated to the best ending screen to date......

Since we had a pretty good snowfall up here already what better game to celebrate with than Heavy Shreddin'. Much like George Foreman's KO Boxing this game seemed brutally hard at first. After getting used to the controls and realizing that you NEVER have to use one of the two styles of control available it became quite a bit easier. The game seems quite long at first two, but all of the 18 different runs are short so in the end my final run was just barely over 20 minutes. The Backwoods levels which you have to finish at the end of each run are really a lot of fun too. This game really surprised me.

Last up for this update is Flying Warriors. You might remember me talking up how much I enjoyed playing Flying Dragon this year. I was very much looking forward to Flying Warriors as its somewhat of a sequel. While it did have some of the parts I enjoyed from Flying Dragon it also added a lot of new things to the game. Most of which I didn't like. One of the things I liked to much about Flying Dragon was the simplicity of it. The game had you doing fetch quests, farming enemies for money, changing to multiple characters for slightly different spells, and a couple poorly thought out turn based boss battles. I really want to like this game, and had they fleshed out some of the new ideas a little better I think I would have, but given the choice I'm gonna pick Flying Dragon over it.

Future Plans - With the nintendoage list I'm using to choose my games dwindling, and the number of games I even own on that list rapidly shrinking, I'm getting relatively low on options these days. I got my doctor's OK to finally dig into those two last power pad titles I've been salivating over though. After that though you can probably expect to see some gems like Back to the Future II & III, Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure, Mad Max, Roger Clemens MVP Baseball, and maybe if your lucky some Pinball games!
I'm healing well and expecting to get back to work soon. This is my last batch of "at home" games:(
Started off with an interesting one, George Foreman's KO Boxing. It really feels like a pre-cursor to Punch-Out!!. The enemies all have only one short cycle they go through which makes them much easier to figure out than the Punch-Out!! opponents. With less and easier guys to fight against it didnt take long to get through. If you check out the video you might notice that there is no music during the fights. The music during every other part of the game is actually pretty decent though!

Next was Galaxy 5000. If you've ever played one of my favorite racers, Rock 'n Roll Racing, this game might feel familiar. Its got a sci-fi setting, digitized voices, similar control and view, vehicle weapons, cash bonuses, and a nice focus on destroying your opponents instead of just straight racing. It was pretty fun and definitely something to check out if you like unique racers.

Lastly was another racing game, Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge. The gameplay is basically Rad Racer. The only difference is how the campaign is set up. There are 16 races in total and your goal is to have the most points after your 16 race season. Each track starts you off with a qualifying lap. Depending on how well you rank on your qualifying lap you'll get a better starting place for the actual race. Only the top 6 racer out of 26 get points depending on their final ranking. Like George Foreman I was pleasantly surprised by some of the music.

Future Plans - Going back to work soon and am hankering to finally finish off Thunder & Lightning. Also want to play Flying Warriors and Roger Clemens MVP Baseball soon!
As the list I'm choosing my games from over at nintendoage has been slowly dwindling the games I've been playing have been getting more time consuming. Thus the slower rate of uploads lately. Getting our basement renovated and having my appendix removed have slowed me down a bit too. But I've still been hard at work knocking off titles when I get the chance. Here are my latest triumphs.
Spider Man Return of the Sinister Six was something I had mixed feelings about. I really like many super hero games of the SNES/Gen/Arcade era, but I've been coming to the realization that many NES super hero games just weren't up to par. Spider Man on the NES just happens to be a good example of that. While not quite in the terrible arena it has a lot of problems that cause it to ultimately not be all that good. The web swinging is surprisingly good, but otherwise the game doesnt have anything for redeeming qualities.

Next up is yet another of the infamous NES wrestling games, Tag Team Wrestling. Now this game is freakin cheap almost right off the bat. The enemy wrestlers turn red (which happens more often and for longer periods of time the further you get in the game) and when that happens they become invincible and get a free move on you. In the later levels they turn red so often that they tend to grab you the second you get up from their previous move leaving you unable to fight back. Luckily there is a way you can be just as cheap too! If you can cause the fight to move outside the ring they will not turn red at all, and with some good timing you can ring them out pretty consistently. Now just do that at least 35 times in a row (one loss is game over) in order to beat the "Super Champ". Easy, right?

Finally I've been able to cross Eliminator Boat Duel off my list also. This is a boat racing game that plays like a combination of Race America (starting drag), RC Pro AM (upgrade vehicle in between races/similar race view) and Rad Racer (behind the car race view). It does all of the above fairly well, but nothing overly spectacularly. Decent game overall. It took me a few attempts to figure out how to maximize my spending and get my upgrades built up, but the easiest way to ensure victory is to learn when to spam your nitros. Its ok to let our opponent dominate the entire race as long as you can seal the deal right at the end.

Future Plans - I've already put a fair amount of time into Thunder & Lightning which has brought me to the last and second last level several times. I have no doubt I can beat it, I just need to get a good play through. Also gonna give Galaxy 5000 a go before too long unless someone beats me to it.
After a brief hiatus from my NES in order to experience some current gen games (Batman Arkham City, Persona 4 Arena, Valkyria Chronicles) I'm back to my go to system. I scoured the Nintendoage list that I'm currently choosing my games from and saw a couple games that peaked my interest.
In the wonderful box of treasures that I recently got from singlebanana was a copy of Conan which I've actually been looking forward to for quite a while now. So I started off with that one. I had pretty low expectations of the controls and basic gameplay due to hearing others talk about this game. Much to my surprise I found it quite easy to pick up and play though. Sure its odd to have to hold A and Down to pick stuff up, but it really didnt take long to get used to it. Another benefit to having talked with others about this game in the past was having knowledge of a few of the more obscure puzzle solutions in the game such as the Urns puzzle at the end of the game or knocking down the Achilles statue by hacking away at his foot. Overall it was short and somewhat sweet. I didnt mind it, but its definitely not great.

I remember someone here at rfgen mentioning Cobra Triangle when I was looking for challenging games near the start of the year. For whatever reason at the time I left it off my list. Now I finally got around to it though and it was probably deserving of being on that list. There is no one part to the game that is super hard, but its just all around challenging straight through which lead to some pretty disappointing runs. I made it all the way to the last boss on 5 separate occasions and was met with death the first 4. Luckily the game isnt very long so starting over again wasnt the end of the world, but it still hurt that I had to save the damn swimmers and jump the waterfalls again.

Future Plans - I have no game in mind right now, but Romance of the Three Kingdoms II has been on the back burner for a while and I should probably get back to it before too long.
So I've been slacking on my NES playing lately. I spent a little bit of time in the modern world again playing my newly aquired Persona 4 Arena (which I would highly recommend checking out) and revisiting Batman Arkham City working my way towards a platinum (still a couple trophies left to clean up). But I can never completely ignore my NES hunger so I jumped back in with an interesting title, Dirty Harry.
Dirty Harry is an odd game in that the first level is completely different than the rest of the game. In the first stage you wander through a fairly confusing city scape trying to search down certain items and special entrances to other areas. Its quite difficult at first, but with a little practice becomes a bit more manageable as you learn the correct path to travel. The second and third (also final) levels of the game are straight forward side scrolling action. Thankfully there was a password system so I didnt have to revisit stage 1 after finally figuring it out. The ending was fairly unique though. It had a decent sized digitized voice clip of a very recognizable line from one of the Dirty Harry movies.

More importantly than beating Dirty Harry was that I beat my 200th recorded NES game since October 2011!!! I'm quite pleased with that number! Another interesting number that I'm pleased with is 50,000. Thats how many views I exceeded on my youtube channel thanks to my 40 subscribers (many of which I recognize from rfgen!). Looking forward to getting to 400 games now!
Here is the full list for you guys.

Future Plans - Cleaning up my last few Batman Trophies and then I'll dive back into NES full force.
I typically like to update every 3-5 games, but somehow I managed to knock out 7 titles since last my last blog! And there were a few delightful surprises in there too!
First game I beat was a very interesting title called Treasure Master. This game was developed in association with MTV and was basically a contest. You enter your special code packed in with the game to unlock the final stage and therefore be eligible to enter the contest. Upon completing the final stage you receive a new code to enter into a mail away form and a phone number to call for help if needed. The prizes actually sounded pretty decent with stuff like trips to see your favorite band or sports team, new home theater systems, big cash prizes and tons of game/console prizes. The game itself can be a bit frustrating at times, but its not to bad. Its a platformer with a little bit of action tossed in and an interesting exploration/puzzle aspect to it. Each level has various tools hidden throughout it and you have to figure out where to use each tool you've found. Most tools only have one area to use them in, but a few attack items can be used in any part of the game. If there is one thing to say about this game though its that the main character has one badass stride when he walks. Its probably my favorite character animation of any NES game.

Since I've already taken care of the other 3 Simpsons games I figured I might as well knock Krusty's Fun House off my list too. It starts off fairly fun and simple, but quickly becomes boring, repetitive and frustrating due to the way you have to stand on the very end of platforms to solve many puzzles. There are much better puzzle games on the system so its only really worth checking out if your a huge Simpsons fan, and even then there isnt to much fanfare.

King's Knight by Squaresoft was my next target. This one is another interesting mashup of genres. It is very much a scrolling shooter, but with strong RPG type elements in it. The game consists of 5 levels, the first 4 having to be played each with a different character specific to each level. The final stage is played by any of the 4 characters that survived their initial levels. By hitting select at the title screen after dying you can replay any of the characters levels again in order to get them all to the final stage. Each character has to be on the lookout for some special powerups in their respective stages in order to gain access to a powerful spell in the final stage, there are 4 of each of these powerups for each character to find. In addition to the spell powerups each character can collect other useful items such as: increased attack power, increased defence, faster movement or increased jumping capabilities. Depending on how many of these powerups you find your character is given a level (1-20 where every single powerup collected adds one level to your character) So the challenge is to get each character as close to level 20 as possible and have access to their spell for the final stage. Now in the final stage all for characters form a diamond shape and by hitting arrow tiles scattered through the level you can swap your front character. By some trial and error you can find which character needs to use their spell at different parts of the level. Once you are able to navigate your way through a fairly challenging castle you get to face off against the final boss. Each character is needed to beat him and all 4 of your guys must hit the boss at least 15 times a piece before you can claim victory.

After that was done I decided to follow in Arino-san's footsteps and challenge Mighty Bomb Jack. This was one of the best titles I've played in quite a while. Each room is scattered with treasures, secrets and randomly spawning enemies. The character controls AMAZINGLY and feels very fun to move around with such ease. Each level ends in a room full of bombs and baddies. After clearing all the bombs from the room you get to move onto the next level. A nice little trick I learned from Arino was to collect the bomb with the burning fuse last in order to skip a world. By using this technique I was able to save the king and beat the game fairly quickly, but I definitely plan to come back to this one day and see if I cant find some of the secret items and get one of the better endings.

After that I had to keep my Bases Loaded legacy alive and started work on Bases Loaded 3. The win condition in this game was fairly unique. My goal was to beat a Level 5 team (the hardest) and have my rating at the end of the game be 100, which is the highest possible rating. Every error you make, such as getting struck out, throwing wild pitches or tossing the ball to the wrong base costs you 3 of your 100 points. If you can shut out their team for the inning you can make 1 point back and by making a "great play" you can score 2 points back. I took the easy route out and used the team edit tools and created a team of steroid induces berserkers in order to keep my play time with this game to a minimum. I figured I have spent enough time loading bases on the first two games that I deserved to take the easy way out. Plus it was a built in game feature so it didnt feel like cheating

Second to lastly I played a game that I've heard a fair amount of negativity about, Castelian. Each level starts you at the bottom of a tower and tasks you with figuring out some short puzzles in order to reach the top of the tower before your time runs out. After completing the tower you get a bonus stage in which you can rack up points by collecting gems and if you are able to make it to the end of the bonus stage you are awarded with some extra time for the next tower stage. I found the towers to be a lot of fun and surprisingly addictive. Definitely a game worth checking out.

And lastly I played possibly my favorite game of the bunch, Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll. Flying Dragon starts off as a very generic side scroller, with very simplistic controls. In these types of levels you have to defeat 5 enemies in order to get a boss to appear on screen. Once you've killed 5 bosses and collected the items they were carrying you gain access to the real fun part of the game. The 1 on 1 fighting areas. To fight you have to watch for targets that appear on either your character or the enemy and react quickly before the opponent can strike/dodge. To make things even more interesting you have to defeat some enemies in very specific ways in order to get them to reveal their true form as Tusk Soldiers and then fight these demonic rivals in order to obtain the secret scrolls they have stolen. The game has the basic high/mid/low kicks and punches for you to work with, but there are also several special moves at your disposal as well as healing items that occasionally make their way across the screen for you to pick up. These fighting levels are so much fun that the side scrolling areas feel like they just get in the way. Luckily you can do all of them, even the later levels in about 2 minutes and get back to the good stuff. This game has a required second quest in order to get the real ending, but since I had so much fun going through it the first time I had no issue doing it again right after. The only difference is that you are also tasked with finding 4 crystal balls along with the 6 scrolls hidden throughout the game. Its not nearly as daunting as it sounds and its a blast to play though, even the second time around.

Future Plans - I'm getting close to another big milestone so I'm going to try for another game that big in scope such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms II to try and make that milestone memorable.
This update is all over the place again. First was Kid Kool adn the Quest of the Seven Wonder Herbs. Awesome title! This game seems to be designed to be an especially frustrating platformer. Your quest is to finish seven stages, each ending with a boss battle, and depending on how quick you finish you get a slightly different ending. The levels have a lot of different trial and error sections which I'm assuming are to slow you down and prevent you from getting the best endings to easily. After you get used to the awkward jumping controls (you have to be moving at a decent pace to be able to jump forward with any momentum) it plays alright, but holy hell some of the areas you have to get past are annoying. It took me around 3 hours to finish the game and I still seemed to get a good ending (but not the best one).

Someone on the nintendoage thread I've been following made a comment about AD&D Dragon Strike being nearly impossible. I'd never tried it out and always assumed it was going to be a traditional RPG or possibly a dungeon crawler. Turns out its a shooter, cool right! So I had to pop it in and see what all the fuss was about. Turn out I loved the game and only wish I'd played it years ago. You get to control one of 3 different dragons, all with different stats and attacks. Even though this game is definitely in the shmup family it plays drastically different than most. Instead of scrolling vertical/horizontal you get complete freedom to move as you wish across a small map. Each mission consists of 1 or more objectives which have to be met before you can move on to the next mission. Your dragon moves in a swooping motion instead of straight ahead and you can switch between to different heights. Some enemies or projectiles will require you to be at a different height to hit/avoid. Very cool little game that I'd definitely recommend trying out.

Popped in yet another black box beauty and tried out Slalom. Having played a few different black box games already I had some expectations about Slalom going in. It surpassed most of them right away. As far as BB games go its got to be one of the best. Decent graphics, sound and gameplay really werent what I was expecting when I turned it on. Short enough that it doenst get too repetitive and just a lot of fun.

Next up was yet another Taito game, Wrath of the Black Manta. I've had relatively good experiences with most other Taito games so far so I had high hopes for Black Manta. While it did do a few unique things and have some funny cheesy-ness to it, it ultimately was broken because of one move you obtain after completing the first level. It wasnt bad, but not up to par with many of Taito's other games.

Finally for this update is my most recent pick up, Race America. I'm not a fan of racing games unless they are Mario Kart. This may be the exception though. I had a lot of fun with Race America and it played VERY well for an NES title. Almost something I'd have expected to see on the SNES or Genesis. It might even be a bona fide hidden gem. Very cool game!

5 more games to slate your NES thirst this time around, and they are a little all over the place again.
My friend lent me several seasons of the fantastic TV show The Wire recently. So I thought I might as well play something mindless and time consuming while watching. Enter Bases Loaded II. 75 games need to be won in your season to enter the World Series and then a best of 7 game series must be won to beat the game. Needless to say I finished 4 out of 5 seasons of The Wire while playing this game. They fixed a few glitches from the first game and made the game much faster paced, but at its core its nearly identical as its predecessor.

After that I decided it was time to explore the world of 8-bit pool for the first time in my life and booted up my copy of Break Time: The National Pool Tour. The tournament mode consists of playing a best of 3 match of 9-ball against 5 different computer opponents. The AI is savage right off the bat. You cant afford to make mistakes against even the first couple challengers. Luckily your given a password save after beating each opponent. Due to the level of difficulty, if you watch my video (when I get around to editing the pieces together and uploading it) you'll find that many of my victories are rather flukey. I take what I can get though. I did find a few of the computer players to have very amusing pornstar-esque names. Gems like Betty Bank Shot or Hot Shot Harry.

Next up I revisited a game that kicked my ass a few years back, Rainbow Islands. This time I had more drive and determination and am arguably at the peak of my NES skill so I made sure nothing was going to stop me this time around. Even as early as level 3 this game starts getting pretty tough. Level 4, 6 and 8 in particular though are pretty brutal. Good thing they load you up with unlimited continues!
After finishing off the last boss you get to choose 1 of 3 options and are rewarded with an ending. Friendship is the "true" ending as with any of the Bubble Bobble games, but I decided to use my wish to force a celebrity to marry me instead. Who can resist the allure of Cutey Cutey?

On Bomba's recommendation I tried out Conquest of the Crystal Palace. After getting used to the massive kickback that your prone to when getting hit by an enemy I was on my way. Very cool game with a few pretty unique aspects to it. I think Bomba did a pretty good job of describing it so check it out here if you havnt already.

And finally I played a game that is the epitome of vanilla, Peter Pan And The Pirates. Its so bland in nearly every way. At least it was short though. Check out level 2 for instance where EVERYTHING is green. Blah.

Future Plans - Nothing in particular in mind at the moment. I'll probably try and knock off another 1 or 2 shorter titles before I leave town on Thursday and then when I return home early next week I can dig into something more time consuming.
Its been a while since my last blog, but dont fret I've been hard at play. My internet connection at work has become very unreliable lately so my online time (aka blogging time) has been cut down considerably until we can solve our problem.
During that time I beat 4 more games and surprisingly enough I actually really enjoyed each of them. The first of this batch was The 3D Adventures of World Runner. And I have to say if you havnt played it definitely check it out. Its one of the most unique platforming games on the NES. It takes a back to front scrolling view as opposed to the very familiar side scrolling look. During the last 3 levels it can be a bit challenging, but the music is so freakin happy its nearly impossible to get frustrated. The bosses are all the same and very boring and repetitive, but the rest of the game is tons of fun straight through.

Had a second adventure after that one with my buddy Rad Gravity. Its a platformer with lots of puzzle elements tossed in. Each level has items that give you access to new areas on your map. So you've got to figure out what your new equipment does and where to use it to find yet more new equipment. Eventually you'll resurrect an alien bent on world universal destruction to fight with. It takes a lot longer than your typical platformer, but there are tons of secrets and enjoyable puzzles to keep you going.

Followed up my adventures with a nice little shmup called Twin Eagle. I had overlooked it because the box art kind of sucks, but it was still on the list of games yet to be completed over at nintendoage so I got around to it. Nothing to write home about, but it was solid. I like my shmups to be fairly plain and it definitely fit into that category. Kind of a step above something like Sky Shark, but waaaay behind something like Zanac. If love shumps I doubt Twin Eagle will do much for you, but if havnt played the really good ones yet it might hit the spot.

Lastly I was able to beat quite possibly the hardest game I've come across yet, Dragon's Lair. What made Dragon's Lair so challenging was one small part of the game, the final boss Singe. The rest of the game I really enjoyed and thought it felt as much like a traditional Dragon's Lair game as a platformer possibly could. Lots of memorization and following patterns like in the original, 5 lives to start you off like in the original, same story and some of the same characters as the original and pretty much EVERYTHING in the game will instantly kill you...... like in the original. Lots of the complaints I hear are about Dirk's sluggish controls. I think they played perfectly into the feel of the series though. With tighter controls the game would have played more like an action platformer. Because of the slowed down movements though you had to rely on memorization like in the other Dragon's Lair games. It felt right to me in every way, until I reached Singe. Everything moving at you during that fight is an instant kill and the speed of his attacks combined with Dirk's molasses-like movements made it nearly impossible. I said nearly. I ended up fighting him somewhere around 4 dozen times, by which time the rest of the game because increasingly easy, until I got a lucky round on him. By lucky I mean he shot a high puff of smoke every time a baby dragon appeared on screen during the fight. I find it incredibly difficult to kill the baby dragons when forced to jump the low puffs. He may have tried to give me a round like that much earlier, but I often made the mistake of jumping into a high puff because of the quick response time required to dodge them. Finally I was victorious though and I have to say, it was one of the most satisfying games I've beaten yet.

Future Plans - A buddy lent me a couple seasons of The Wire to watch so I needed something long and mindless to play while I watched. So I started Bases Loaded II!!
After a slow last few weeks working on some time consuming titles I wanted to blast through a few shorter titles to help me feel productive. So I did just that!
Thought I'd finish up the last of the Volleyball games (licensed ones anyway) on the system. First on my list was Kings of the Beach. Plays like a more serious version of Super Spike V'ball. Tournament mode consisted of 15 matches of 2 on 2 volleyball to 15 set point games. Late in the game I figured out how to expoit the computer, but early on it seemed like each rival had a different weakness you could take advantage of. After figuring that out the game was a breeze and I was quickly crowned the King of the Beach!

To finish up my V'Ball trifecta I played the only traditional volleyball game and Black Box title, Volley Ball. This one plays with 6 players per side rather than 2 like the last 2 games. Seemed quite crowed at first and took a lot of getting used to. Spent several games getting slaughtered, but eventually figured out how to abuse the AI and won my 3 matches that resulted in a victory.

Some time ago I tried out Blue Brothers and was amazed at how it seemed to have nothing to do with its source material. As I got further into the game it seemed to have less and less to do with it too. Its a semi-puzzle platformer, which is normally a great combo in my books. But in the case of BB it wasnt great. I think the main issue was some tricky jumping combined with the fact that your character is utterly defenseless. You have to avoid nearly everything in the game or you'll take damage. Luckily its a short game so it was over in less than 20 minutes once I got the hang of it.

Lastly was Lode Runner. I used to play some version of it on a friend's PC years ago and remember it fondly so I was actually little excited to check out the NES version. It didnt disappoint. The game has built in stage select so its very easy to complete, but still a fun game none-the-less. There were a few levels that took a while for me to figure out, but for the most part its fairly straightforward. The video is pretty long, but its literally every second of me playing the game. Usually I restart my games after I fail and restart the recorder in order to cut down the time of the videos, but with the infinte chances and level select I just went with it. You can see my learning curve in its fullness with many many deaths early on and getting temporarily stuck on stage 6 before I find my footing and start running pretty smoothly through some levels.

Some of you might have seen my recent post in the Small Scores thread in which my buddy Duke.Togo graciously hooked me up with a beautiful copy of a new homegrew game - Assimilate.

Future Plans - After getting a few more titles under my belt I think I'm ready to dive into my next epic adventure. Got Romance of the Three Kingdoms II lined up and ready to go!
Since well before I decided to take on Romance of the Three Kingdoms I started playing the well known baseball game Bases Loaded. It never occured to me it would take as long or longer that the epic KOEI title to actually beat it though. Well if I would have read the manual a little better I would have known you have to win 80 games our of a 132 game season in order to declare victory.
I wont know which title I invested more time in until I get a chance to edit together the both of them, but right now my money is on Bases Loaded by a hair. It took me 85 games to win the Penant, but at least its done.

I meant to bring my newly aquired Assimilate cart along with me to try out after I finished Bases Loaded, but I mistakenly grabbed another new cart I had set next to it, The Addams Family Pugsleys Scavenger Hunt. Oh well why not give that one a go. After about an hour this very bland game was done. The entire game seemed to be absent of music. It was very odd and I'm curious to know if my opinion of "bland" would change at all if there was some tunage added to the experience.

Future Plans - I also attempted some Time Lord tonight, but it seems there is a glitch on the third stage boss that makes him invulnerable. I hit it three times in a row, so I'm going to have to figure out how to work around that to progress.
A little while ago my wife and son went on a short visit down south to visit her mother. She does something like this a couple times a year when we can afford it and her days off align with the planets. Usually we have something around the house that needs to get done so I use that free time to try and fix an appliance or replace boards in our deck. This time though we were pretty up to date on our home maintenance so I had a lot of Nintendo time! So I decided to dive into a lengthy and legendary game while I had the chance.
Other than quick cart tests I've never spent much time on KOEI games from this era so I decided to make my first taste one of their most famous offerings on the system, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. My first couple attempts were miserable and I was getting frustrated. I posted a "help wanted" thread over at nintendoage hoping for some pointers. Luckily a couple of guys from my neighbourly Alberta were familiar with the game and were more than happy to help me out.
With a firm grasp on the basics I was finding the game A LOT more enjoyable. The scope of the game was still fairly large though as I not only had to defeat every enemy in every state, but I also had to conquer each of 58 states and have a loyal general occupy each territory. After many, many hours of harvesting rice and setting fire to my rivals fortresses I was finally victorious in my quest!

As some of you may know I just recently received a package in the mail from Duke.Togo. In said package was a game that he has been requesting I try for quite some time now, Gumshoe. Its been a little while since I've played a straight zapper game (I'm not counting Bayou Billy), so I popped it in tonight and gave it a whirl.
As far as zapper games and black box games go its quite good and very unique. Quirky little side scroller that involves you shooting the main character, Stevenson, a lot in order to get him bouncing around the screen to collect and avoid items and baddies repsectively. The goal is to gather 5 giant Diamonds from 4 different levels and deliver them to some sort of kidnapper in order to save your daughter. The final gem is protected by the only boss in the game Kulie in which you have to simply keep Stevenson alive long enough that he can take done Kulie with his newly acquired machine gun.
If your in the mood to zap one night check it out.

Both of these games gave me a problem that I didnt encounter with the rest of the power pad titles. My running was very twitchy onscreen and jumps seemed less responsive than the other games. Athletic World in particular was quite frustrating, especially the events with animals to jump over. The only event I found particularly enjoyable was the river rapid. The squatting and jumping was fun, but..... the fish you had to dodge ruined the experience for me.
Super Team Games was just boring compared to most of the others. Just what you'd expect. The Skateboarding part had potential, but was ultimately lame.
Now I just need to pick up the last 2 Power Pad titles I'm missing, Street Cop and Short Order/Eggsplode.

Future Plans - You may not have seen many videos uploaded to the old youtube channel lately, but I havnt been slacking. Been logging many hours into Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Bases Loaded.
There has been one person on Nintendoage that has had more NES games finished from their list this year than myself. Its been bugging me so I've been pushing hard to catch up and pass him. I was able to knock off 4 more games in the last couple days. All pretty short and relatively easy, but a couple pretty fun ones.
First up was City Connection. Fun little arcade style game that has you jumping your car from streets at different heights trying to make sure you've touched every bit of road before being able to move onto the next stage. While driving around you have to avoid cats and police. With only 6 different stages to see it didnt take long to get them looping, but it was definitely a fun time.

Next game was also surprisingly fun, American Gladiators. I remember catching a show or two when I was younger and each event featured in the game was familiar. Some were more fun than others, but I though that the Wall, Joust and Human Canonball were pretty cool, and the Eliminator round at the end was a blast. Very neat game.

Picked a couple quicky sports games next to help move things along. Roundball 2-on-2 Challenge was the first one. Had some trouble at first until I realized it was very easy to sink 3 point shots. After that I just sat back and just sank basket after basket without worrying about what the opposing team was up to.

Lastly I played through 720, which is a skateboarding game and not a very good one. Like many NES games that have your character rotating 360 degrees I had a very hard time actually landing the spins. Luckily I didnt really need to do spin tricks. The game consists of 4 events in 4 different classes. This one was kind of like Ski or Die in the sense that you can just clear each event and dont necessarily have to do very well.

Future Plans - Wife and Son are going out of town tonight so I'm going to have several days to myself shortly. Thought I'd use that time to conquer an RPG or Strategy game, possibly something KOEI.
