Back into the modern realm with this one!

Spyborgs was a game that originally went right under my radar. After doing a bit of searching for Wii titles that sounded interesting I stumbled upon it. The thing that sold me the most was the fact that it had simultaneous Co-op play. Most of what I've been exposed to over the last couple generations are either Single Player or Competitive Multiplayer. So I was pretty psyched to play something Co-op again. In a Genre that has been pretty neglected over that last 10 years + no less.

Spyborgs is a 3D Beat'em Up that plays like a 2D one. While you can move your character in any direction, the levels are designed to keep you moving in one direction and are very linear. It uses the same formula that games like Streets of Rage or Final Fight have used in the past. Defeat a group of enemies and move onto the next group of enemies.

One of the ways that Spyborgs sets itself apart is by uncovering secret items or hidden enemies by using the Wii Remote as a pointer to uncover them. Each level has a ton of secrets to expose using this method.

Each of the 3 characters also has access to a "team move". These allow you to have both team members attack an enemy simultaneously. An on screen prompt will pop up for each character and they must be input quickly in order for the move to take effect. Each type of enemy in the game has a different prompt to input in order to keep you on your toes. Each enemy type also produces a different type of powerup.

When defeating Enemies, Breaking objects or performing Team Moves you'll be rewarded with 1 of 3 different powerups. Health is the obvious one. Team Moves also run off a "health" type meter and are filled by collecting the Orange power ups scattered in each level.

The last Power up is a form of currency which is used between levels to increase your characters abilities. New moves, increased strength, increased health or quicker team attacks can all be upgraded by using the currency collected each level.

The difficulty is frighteningly difficult after finishing the first level of the game. Luckily you can go into the options menu at any time and adjust it if you are having trouble. Once your character is beefed up a bit you can replay the older levels on higher difficulties if you so desire.

Spyborgs has a ton of replayability to offer. Each level has a best combo score, time to beat and hidden tape to find. Achieving these goals unlocks tons of extra content such as, early builds of the game or spoof movies regarding the games story and characters. On top of each levels goals there are trophy goals also. These range from beating all levels on certain difficulties to finding hundreds of hidden items to destroying every possible object of certain levels. A few tedious ones, but overall quite varied.

Spyborgs is a solid beat'em up game by yourself, but it really shines with a second human player (The computer controls a second player if you are playing solo). It can easily be found for less than $20 so don't hesitate to grab a copy for yourself and smash some robots and enjoy the cheesy dialogue and interesting extras.

Final Score - 7/10

Totally agreed! Good thing they changed the art style midway through development. Great coop beat-em-up, they just don't make those anymore...

Interesting read, I've never even heard of this game before. Does it have online co-op?

@ Duke

No online functions at all!! My kind of game!!
