Join your fellow rfgen members in January when we play arguably one of the most important titles in gaming

Everyone knows about Super Mario Bros 3 so I'll keep it short this time. If you had an NES you basically had to have SMB3. It was a no brainer and one of the best selling games of all time. That's impressive considering its nearly a 20 year old game.

Lucky for us there are a few different ways you can obtain and play this game. There is of course the original release (and my personally recommended choice) on the NES. Its also playable on the SNES via Super Mario All Stars and the GBA via Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. Or if your one of "those kind" you can download it onto your Wii through the Virtual Console.

Its in high supply and quite affordable on all platforms so do yourself a huge favor and grab up a copy. I hope to see our biggest turnout yet for this one.

I'll have to see about firing up the SNES for this one if i still have AllStars
Or i could go out of my way to get a CIB copy for GBA....

I still want to know who voted for Vectorman and then didn't play it. Bastards!
That being said it was a new and fun experience Smiley

Thanks for the involvement this month Izret. I'm sure a couple people planned on it, but you know how busy people get in December, so we'll let it slide this time. Hopefully a lot more people pop in for ol' SMB3 though.

Thanks for setting up the idea. Smiley

I like having people to talk to about games when i play them. It can kinda suck when every game you play everyone finished years ago/doesn't remember it/never heard of it/wouldn't play it.

If Anyone wouldn't mind, could I have the basics of this explained? I would love to play SMB3 and maybe beat it this time, but I haven't been able to give myself a reason as I find myself suffering from an addiction to Xbox 360 Achievements and haven't played a non 360 game in almost three years now. I know I am missing out on a lot of good gaming, but I can't find a good reason to break from it to play anything else in my collection.

I had a GBA copy on its way to me, but it got "lost in the mail." Sigh. But I'll get it after xmas. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time.

@Boshamp: Yeah sure. The basics is that Super Mario Brothers 3 is the best platformer ever made by quite an enormous margin. And it's an absolutely huge game in terms of the number of levels, secrets, and powerups.

Actually the purpose of Off the Shelf is for people like you bosh.
It is to get you to break out an older game (or newer) that you haven't played in years(or ever) and since others on the site are going to be doing the same thing everyone can (re)discover these games and talk about them, give advice, say they suck, whatever.

Oh boy did I misinterpret what Bosh was asking lol.

@Izret101: And whatever we feel the urge to talk about or share we add as posts to this thread? I think this thread could really help me break my habit of achievement whoring...ha ha.

There is/will be a thread on the board. This is just a precursor blog.
If you played Vectorman last week you could have gotten a double whammy. I got achievements for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis collection and invest time into and beat a game i probably wouldn't have put more than a try into otherwise.

Banjo Kazooie/Gunstar Heroes were 2 other games people voted on that you can play on 360 too.
Both of which i have never played before. If/when those end up being the game of the month i'll probably dload them and give them a try and up my gamerscore.

@Izret101: You should add me on LIVE or give me your tag to add to my friend list. Boshamp33 is mine. (Original I know...ha ha) I already have 1000/1000 for S.U.G.C. and 200/200 for both Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie...lol I also own Gunstar Heroes on a handheld and Download, but have never played it either.

I will keep my eye open for the thread and will start it up next month and hopefully achieve my own personal goal of conquering the game without the use of warp whistles. Smiley

I'm izret101 on Live. I am also spectacularly original but i like the consistency so people can find me Smiley I'll send you a request tonight if you haven't sent me one.

I've never beat SMB3 without the whistles. In fact i doubt i even could...

Between my younger brother and myself, we made it to the sixth world without them, and I have made it to the second map screen in the eighth world, but I couldn't ever do it.

really? I always found SMB3 really easy. I'm not sure I even remember where the f'ing whistles are anymore. And I plan to play it faq-less so, I'll let you know if it's as easy to me as I remember.

We used to get really bored at my Grandma's house and she had an NES with a few games. So my sister and I have beaten SMB3 with and without the wistles multiple times. There are some tricky spots in worlds 5, 7 and 8, but besides that its not to bad.

I'm not even sure what a faq could reveal to me after so many times playing it, but then again, I have been surprised before...especially with Castlevania: Symphony of the night...I thought I beat that game to the utmost fullest extent, but found that I had only discovered three familiars and missed several rooms...I had lived that lie for ten years...lol
