Show Some Love

A little while ago my wife and son went on a short visit down south to visit her mother. She does something like this a couple times a year when we can afford it and her days off align with the planets. Usually we have something around the house that needs to get done so I use that free time to try and fix an appliance or replace boards in our deck. This time though we were pretty up to date on our home maintenance so I had a lot of Nintendo time! So I decided to dive into a lengthy and legendary game while I had the chance.

Other than quick cart tests I've never spent much time on KOEI games from this era so I decided to make my first taste one of their most famous offerings on the system, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. My first couple attempts were miserable and I was getting frustrated. I posted a "help wanted" thread over at nintendoage hoping for some pointers. Luckily a couple of guys from my neighbourly Alberta were familiar with the game and were more than happy to help me out.

With a firm grasp on the basics I was finding the game A LOT more enjoyable. The scope of the game was still fairly large though as I not only had to defeat every enemy in every state, but I also had to conquer each of 58 states and have a loyal general occupy each territory. After many, many hours of harvesting rice and setting fire to my rivals fortresses I was finally victorious in my quest!

As some of you may know I just recently received a package in the mail from Duke.Togo. In said package was a game that he has been requesting I try for quite some time now, Gumshoe. Its been a little while since I've played a straight zapper game (I'm not counting Bayou Billy), so I popped it in tonight and gave it a whirl.

As far as zapper games and black box games go its quite good and very unique. Quirky little side scroller that involves you shooting the main character, Stevenson, a lot in order to get him bouncing around the screen to collect and avoid items and baddies repsectively. The goal is to gather 5 giant Diamonds from 4 different levels and deliver them to some sort of kidnapper in order to save your daughter. The final gem is protected by the only boss in the game Kulie in which you have to simply keep Stevenson alive long enough that he can take done Kulie with his newly acquired machine gun.

If your in the mood to zap one night check it out.

Glad you finally got to go through Gumshoe. It's a real forgotten gem IMHO, and a very unique light gun game.

I haven't played Romance of the Three Kingdoms yet, but as a kid, I was a big fan of Nobunga's Ambition.  From what I understand, they are quite similar.

@singlebanana:
Nobunaga's Ambition on SNES, to this day, still has the most hours I've ever put into one single game. I think I put upwards of 500 hours into it during one summer alone.

I've put hundreds of hours into Romance of the Three Kingdoms II for SNES. It's probably my favorite game for SNES. I'm sad that this genre has mostly disappeared in modern gaming.

@aeroc:
Try the Dynasty Warriors: Empires games. They're "somewhat" similar, though more Action than Simulation. Other than that, I heard there was a Nobunaga game released only in Japan for Xbox 360, which I've been dying to import.

Woohoo, Gumshoe!  I think that the main reason I keep an old CRT around is the off chance I run across Gumshoe in the wild.
