So, we made it. Our last episode of 2010 is here! We decided to do a little year in review episode complete with awards just as meaningful as the Spike VGAs! We have a little discussion and each of us has our viewpoint (as usual), but we also want your input on what you thought of this year in gaming! We didn't go the normal route of "Best game of the year", but once you check out our categories, we'd love to hear what you think about things. Did you agree? Disagree? Were we way off? Or do you have something else entirely that you think fits?

So, the first episode has been released, I'm going to be working on getting it up on iTunes for easier subscribing, and now it's time for you guys to chime in for an upcoming episode. (We have the next episode blocked out and should be recording very soon!)

What we want from you is to ask us some questions. slackur and I both agreed that there should be some sort of an introductory episode that lets you know just where we are coming from when we are giving our opinions. The time between our ages is about the same as a console generation, so while we have probably played many of the same games, we are bound to have different viewpoints on different games and topics. So, we would like to get some input from you (yeah, you, the listener!) about what you want to know about us. We'll be answering your questions in an upcoming episode. You can comment here or in the thread here: http://www.rfgeneration.c...m/index.php?topic=10781.0

Look for more episodes soon (with your input!) and don't forget to keep it on channel 3!

So... it's now been over a year since I announced the RF Generation Podcast. That went... nowhere. Again, after chatting in the IRC room again, slackur brought up the question to me about just what happened. I had nothing but excuses. It's been in the back of my mind for a long time, but the excitement that he brought to the discussion reinvigorated my desire to podcast for this site. We are beginning the framework and some initial topics and scripts now, but feel it's time to officially...

REANNOUNCE THE RF GENERATION PODCAST!

To reiterate my previous blog post on this: this podcast is for you, the members. slackur and I will be your co-hosts. We will, eventually, have guests from the community as well.

Starting off, we're looking at bi-weekly episodes, but if it takes off (and we get good at this), we may move to a weekly schedule. slackur is working on some topics for us to start off with, but we're going to have a topic in the forums to take your reactions, your topic suggestions, or any other comments you may have about it.

Hopefully, it's not another year before a topic like this comes up and we hope to hear from you guys soon!

EDIT: Wanted to include a link to the new topic in the forums.

Planet Comicon http://www.planetcomicon.com is in town this weekend. There were plenty of comics, movies, and collectibles to be had as well as many artists showcasing their talent. Here's what we picked up yesterday.

All of my pictures are links because it appears that the links are broken when I try to directly link to them from Picasa. If I get it figured out, I'll get it changed.

With the current generation of consoles, Microsoft and Sony have both touted their machines as being the center of your entertainment center. Microsoft banked on their userbase using Windows Media Player to share their media over your home network. Sony went more open with their platform by allowing any DLNA or UPNP device to share to it. Neither supports every format yet, but with the right software, you can rip and share your media to whatever device you may have at home. Since I first purchased my Xbox 360, I was trying to utilize the media capabilities. It wasn't easy, but it worked. When my wife and I purchased our first home, I wanted to continue to share media, but it obviously wasn't first on the list. Soon after, we purchased a PS3, and quickly it became our media playback device of choice. DVD upscaling over HDMI (I have an HDMI-less 360) as well as Blu-Ray playback, and we were set!

So, the podcast had to be put on hold due to some car problems taking up a lot of my time (and money), but until it finally comes out, I managed to go out of town this weekend and managed to hit up some game stores and thrift stores. Kind of a slow weekend for finds until we were on our way out of town.

Ideas are interesting. For those who don't frequent the chat, I at one point made a YouTube video highlighting a portion of my collection that was kept in storage to show just how much was missing from my online collection. Fairly soon after that, logical123 posted a forum post of a video that he put on YouTube showcasing his collection and his setup. That's when I realized that I don't necessarily think that I can fully express myself with text like I can with my words.

Announcing the RF Generation podcast!

This will be for the members. While I was talking with logical123 one day, I was talking about how I got into collecting and other stories regarding finds, deals, or just interesting parts of collecting. I was able to elaborate much further on this than I feel that I could if I was typing it out. I also feel that the possibility of a co-host or an interview would allow the podcast to focus on the members of the site and their collections and experiences with the fluidity of conversation and truly allow their voice and excitement to be expressed to you.

As I mentioned in the forum, I will probably do a few episodes to see how it works for you and me. I also will be taking suggestions for show ideas so that this will become our show instead of just my experimental project. I hope to be hearing from you all soon.

As those in the chat know, because of my living arrangements, I have my games stored in two different locations: my current house and my in-laws, where we lived previously. My collection at my house had grown to nearly 1000 games and it was starting to bug me that I had no solid idea of exactly what else I had. So, that's what I spent my night doing last night.

I made my way over around 5:00pm and set up the router, then headed downstairs and started plugging away. Things started rather slowly as I began with my containers full of mostly hardware. As those slowly transitioned to containing more and more games, my collection began growing online at a much quicker pace. This is SO much better than IGN. I ended up finding a stopping point roughly 10 shy of 1300 with many boxes to go. But that's not what this is about.

As I was entering stuff, I was finding myself saying, "I didn't know I had this" or " I forgot about that one." I was rediscovering my collection. I really had no idea just how much stuff I had amassed in a relatively small period of time. Along those lines, I had no idea how much hardware I really had. Some obscure, some not-so-obscure, but all there. Lots of joysticks, controllers, and just plain cables.

As for the games, I found some that I forgot I had, but I apparently forgot just how many times I had bought a game. How many copies of Aladdin for Genesis does one person need? I found manuals I didn't know I had for games I'm sure I don't have. With maybe half of my stuff from my in-laws online now, I still have a little way to go. I had originally estimated 300-400 games/systems/accessories over there. With nearly 300 being put in last night alone, I have to think that I had guessed about half of what I had there. Soon, I'll know for sure.

For some time, I have been interested in using Linux as my primary operating system. My first experience was with Red Hat 9-10 years ago. Things have certainly progressed since then.

I have now moved on to Ubuntu. I have tried out each version of Ubuntu for a couple of years now and each has had one little thing that has kept me from switching. I tried the 9.04 beta with some higher hopes from what I had read about it. It does every thing I ask it to. I have found applications that replace my Windows versions and for those that still don't work, WINE has progressed to the point where many applications now work except for maybe the very newest.

I'm now Windows free in my house with my work laptop and home desktop running Ubuntu and our other laptop is a Mac. It is still somewhat of a learning experience and I do have to use Windows at work, but I'm not doing it to make a stand against Microsoft. I'm doing it because, honestly, I'm cheap. I don't want to keep buying an operating system. I haven't ever purchased a version of Windows and I'm not going to start now. I don't want to find ways around their protection. I want it to work. This works for me. I was still in my limbo stage when my mom came over one day and needed something printed off. I hadn't set up my networked HP printer yet, so this was just as good of a time as any. The XP driver download is something around 250MB for the full function driver. I ran the Printer tool and went to add a new printer. It found my printer and was installed within minutes. That really sealed it for me. The fact that my hardware of any type just works is already way ahead of Windows. No more installing Windows, reboot twice, install drivers, reboot, more drivers, reboot, updates, reboot, MORE updates, etc. I can now just install and have a base system with a solid web browser, e-mail client, office suite, image editor, and an adaptable media player. One reboot after install and many updates do not require a reboot during use.

If anyone is interested or wants some help with Ubuntu, I'd be happy to help out. Feel free to PM, IM, or e-mail.

Over the years, gaming has gone from a sort of niche hobby to a full-blown, mainstream activity. I seen gaming go from an activity that only a few of my friends growing up did to dorm room gaming to my 1080p, 5.1 audio setup at home. The first community I was a fairly active member of was the GameFAQs forum. Did the collection on IGN, tried out Digital Press forums before finding my way here. I lurked for a while, primarily using only the Collection tools. I finally started posting more and more, and the people here are extremely nice and really my kind of people. Then came the chat.

I jumped in, and as the new guy, I sort of found it difficult to jump in. After 2-3 times (that I could tell), I felt like I was starting to feel as a part of the group. I am now on a first name basis with pretty much everyone in chat. This type of small community is what I need. I grew up in a small town, and that's the sort of vibe I get here. These people are RFGeneration, down to the roots.

I'm very thankful for this place. It's kind of hard for someone like me to put myself out there and jump into conversation, but when I did, I wish I would have sooner. I plan on sticking around for a long time and I really hope that the community grows while keeping the roots of the small site. I consider all of you my friends and hope to meet many more of you along the way.

Thank you.

As much as the world has changed, our still somewhat niche spot as gamers has adapted to the times as well as the games. We have created our online museum of our past. We share our experiences about the present. And we will evolve together as the gaming community continues to change. I hope to write about some of my experiences with gaming, as well as on some topics that were not directly relevant to me, but to the community or you personally.
