You guys have been so kind to me, I couldn't help but stick around.Have you ever met or personally know anyone at RFG?Technically, no, but I have spoken to bickman2k and slackur through Skype.Number of Games Owned(at time of printing):I don't actually know the exact number, but I am absolutely sure I have over 150 different games handy.Number of Games on Wishlist(at time of printing):None, because I'm impulsive. I buy games on the spot, so a wishlist isn't really my thing.Number of Systems:Eleven.When did you start collecting?Honestly, I'm not really a collector, but when I *was* collecting NES Games, I started in early 2011.What was your first system you owned?Super NES.What was your first game?Super Mario Bros. 1.What was your first game you bought yourself?Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.What made you decide to buy that particular game?I think it was simply because “Mario” was in the title. I was quite surprised when I was playing a different character upon booting it up.First game you ever beat?The Magical Quest on Super NES.Have you ever broken anything due to frustration from a game? Be honest, we won't tell…I've broken an Xbox 360 Controller while dealing with Legendary Souls Mode on Soulcalibur V.Are you collecting now, if so what anything specific?Nope.When did you feel a tipping point from gamer to both gamer and game collector?Probably around the time I started with the NES Collection, early 2011.What are your goals as a game collector, how have you developed them, and how do you feel about your progress toward them?My only real collecting goal was to get 100 NES Games. Speaking from that time, I can't say there was any specific development on how I did it, but I made good progress at a good pace, and felt great about it. How many games, systems, etc. are "enough"?There is NEVER enough. Ever. So long as there are games, systems, etc. to get, there will never be enough. Keep on truckin’!What's your proudest moment as a game collector?When I finally got my Power Glove.What's your least proud moment as a game collector?Prices were kind of weird at one point, so I ended up selling a copy of The Misadventures of Tron Bonne for PS1 at a “bad for me, good for them” price.If you had to give part of your collection away for a worthy cause what part would it be, and why?My Super NES Mini (Not to be confused with the recently released Super NES Classic) with my copy of Super Mario RPG, because I feel that everyone should have a chance to experience it.Where/how do you store it all?It’s all in my bedroom with me, on shelves and in very contained tubs. What's your favorite part of your collection?The fact that it’s big enough that I can’t get bored easily.What about a favorite series?The King of Fighters.What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to gaming?Does using my Power Glove more often than it should ever be used count? That.What is the most valuable part of your collection(Value or sentimental)?My copy of Chrono Cross. My best friend gave it to me.What game do you have the most nostalgia for?Super Mario RPG. It was my first RPG ever, and I love my RPGs.What would you like to improve in your collection?There are some CIB PS1 Games I have, and the cases could be a lot better, as they are cracked and scuffed.What do you think was your best deal while game buying?Probably getting the Super NES Game, Hagane, for 40 US Dollars.What item in your collection do you feel you overpaid for?I paid a small fortune of 90 US Dollars for Dokapon Kingdom on Wii.Good spending is crucial in collecting. What do you feel is the strangest or weirdest item in your collection?You're not gonna believe me, but it’s a PlayStation 1 equivalent of a Power Glove.What item(s) do you not have in your collection that people are surprised to hear you don't have?Chrono Trigger.Is there any way you'd ever stop collecting?Since I technically don’t collect now, this is a tricky question. But to answer it in another way, I’d never stop because I just love playing so much.Do you have a funny story about your collection?No.Have you ever had to move your collection to another house? What was it like?No.If your significant other told you no more games, what would you do?I’m not married or in a relationship, but if she told me that? She’s gotta go. No one I’d ever be with would say that to me, because they’d have to enjoy games too.What percentage of your games are still sealed?Not even one. What percentage of your games have you actually played? Completed?I’d say about half at 50 percent are completed, but about 80 percent are played.Do you own any complete collections?No.Time to bring out the fanboys! What is your favorite game of all time?Chrono Cross!Least Favorite?Rise of the Robots.Do you collect anything else besides games?Laserdiscs.What do you outside of games?I’m a trivia historian, of sorts. I love random trivia and history of things. Mostly anything.What other features would you like to see more of at RFG?Isn’t Vectrex open-source? We should add some of those games to the forum’s arcade.Addicted, the previous interviewee, asked,"(Camp CRT or LCD)" CRT."Are you planning on purchasing an upscaler for playing your old console on your HDTV or are you sticking with CRTs?" Purchasing an upscaler.Thanks for your time!

Great read! Nice learning more about you Redd.

Somehow, the fact that King of Fighters is your favorite series has escaped me, when we've chatted on Discord. Always fun to learn new tidbits about folks

I love KoF too!! My fav is probably 13 but I also really love 97. Do you have a favorite? What are your thoughts on 14? I want to love it, but it's the ugliest game in the series by a lot and that really drives me nuts when every other game in the series looks amazing.
Is there a reason you love Chrono Cross so much but don't own Chrono Trigger? Nothing against Cross, but it just seems odd to have the latter and not the former.
Anyway I Love this interview.....it's so bad!!

@Crabmaster2000:
Tough question! I really do love 97, but I also love 2006 a lot too. My opinion on 14 is that I like it a lot, but dang, why can't more characters have more alternate costumes?
The question regarding Cross VS. Trigger is easy: I despise Trigger so much thanks to it's plot. To keep a long answer short...why would you go FORWARD in time to stop a threat to your world? They start in 1000 AD, so rather than go backwards to stop the thing from ever attacking in the first place, say, killing it in 65 Million BC, they do the stupid thing and go forward. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!! I hate Trigger so much!! But Cross is perfect in comparison. Everything about it is perfect. In my honest opinion, Trigger only exists to setup the greater plot of Cross. Period.

Always love to read these. Good job

@ReddMcKnight: I havn't put much time into 2006. I'll have to revisit that one.
I've never heard that attitude towards Chrono Trigger. Fascinating. You know you can defeat Lavos in 65 Million BC though, right? I'm not saying there arn't plot holes (pretty much a given with time travel), but you can totally get the ending you want.
I used to hate Chrono Cross. I tried a bunch of times to get into it and it just was so boring. A few years ago I gave it yet another go and the further I got the more I enjoyed it. I think it just has such a slow boring start to that game, but the more you get into it the more it picks up. Ended up really loving it when I was done.

As much as the world has changed, our still somewhat niche spot as gamers has adapted to the times as well as the games. We have created our online museum of our past. We share our experiences about the present. And we will evolve together as the gaming community continues to change. I hope to write about some of my experiences with gaming, as well as on some topics that were not directly relevant to me, but to the community or you personally. |
