Hey everyone, just wanted to give a heads up that there will be some down time soon. The OS that the server is on is going end of life soon, so we need to upgrade. Unfortunately, in this case, that means that we have to take it down and deploy a new server because of the version that we're moving to.
What does this mean? Well, I don't anticipate this taking an incredibly long time, but the site will be down while this is happening. We'll have the URL redirect to a Wordpress blog that we have set up for situations where there is an extended down time. You can watch for updates there in case something majorly breaks, but you can also hop in the Discord or follow the site on Twitter as well to get additional updates or if you want to hang with the community while this is being worked on.
Sorry in advance for the inconvenience, but hang with us while we get this done and we'll be back soon. So, while you may end up changing inputs temporarily, be sure to change it back to channel 3 when we return.

Will this have any benefit to the site? Maybe some future updates?

It will at least enable that to happen. We have a little bit of work to do still, but this is more of a requirement even if we had the other updates done before now.

Thanks for all you do, good sir.

I hope the downtime this time around will be of a much shorter duration than the unintentional one we experienced back in 2012. Also, while you're at it, please try not to lose 4 years of the site's history. Much obliged...

Downtime?! If 2020 wasn't bad enough...
and 2012? Let me tell you about the 2009 downtime young whippersnapper...
|
@nupoile: What a coinkydink, 'cuz the 2012 outage led to the erasure of all posts from Late March of 2009 all the way through to mid-February 2012.
BTW is there a set date and time for when this downtime begins? If so, let us know, plzthx.
Aaaaand finally: A few years back, I recall that there were plans to upgrade RF Gen to make it look more like a proper Web 2.0-era database, as well as add a few new features. I'm curious to know whatever happened with these proposals...

@Zagnorch P. Welinskivich II, Esq.: Hoping to do it this weekend if possible.
As for the upgrades, we did recently have someone reach out who has some PHP experience to help us out with some things. I do have plans to upgrade the forum software to a newer version that will allow us to properly utilize https on the site as a whole as well as other things. Combination of a lot of things have kept me from being able to spend the time on it that it would require.
The 2012 one was related to a server hardware issue and was exacerbated by poor support by our provider that spurred the move to a new host. We will be doing full backups of everything and doing everything we can to make sure that nothing is lost.

@bickman2k: Thanks for all the hard work Brickman. As a IT Server guy, I know how much of a pain upgrades can be.

Thanks for the hard work you all do that keeps this place going
