Posted under collecting, Sega Saturn, opinions

I had a great collecting day on Saturday.  I added 4 consoles(mentioned below) and over 50 games to the collection and the prices were outstanding.  I was able to trade a single Virtual Boy game plus a minimal $ for a CIB Nintendo 64 system, buy multiple hockey games for different systems for $0.50 each, added two original Playstations (7001 & 9001) for a total of $4, and added an Atari Flashback console to my collection for free - Thanks RM.

So now I'm curious what I should offer/consider reasonable for an original Sega Saturn system CIB that I found for sale today.  It is somewhat difficult to trust eBay or VGPC when most sales are with games and acc. or without box.
And inquiry #2 would be what everyone's favorite Saturn games are, if I am going to try it out.  Tell me all about it/them.  I enjoy all the stories.

I heard someone complain about how we don't talk anymore, so let's discuss a bit.

These days a Saturn goes for about $50 (controller and cords only), but CIB will set you back a bit.  The Saturn (back in the day) was neither common nor popular with the general public.  These systems were usually purchased, played for a bit, then either discarded or placed aside in storage.  I imagine that many of the consoles on ebay were previously forgotten (and such, usually do not include original boxes, booklets, and/or inserts).

That being said, a complete Saturn will most certainly set you back $80-$130, depending on condition and included controller (make sure you get the Japanese-style controller!).  While it wasn't a mainstream console, this system was a treasure for importers, 2D fighter-fans, shooter-fans, and hardcore (and patient) ROG gamers.

My personal faves include:
-Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter - (with a RAM cart this game is arcade perfect. Import only)
-Metal Slug - (Once again, arcade perfect. Import only)
-Working Designs' RPGs (sooo much fun, if a bit sluggish on the load times)
-Guardian Heroes
-Three Dirty Dwarves (a guilty pleasure...)
-There are really too many good games on this system

I paid $70 for my CIB Sega Saturn console, and it was basically brand new. Depending on the condition and whether or not it contains everything that came with it, I would offer $75.

As for games, I would basically go with bombatomba's list. There are many awesome RPGs to be had on the system without importing, and between the awesome imported shmups and fighting games, it's an impressive system.

One suggestion for Guardian Heroes: wait until the game is released on XBLA this summer. The price on it will plummet as demand drops, just like it did for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on PS2.

I'm also interested in getting a Saturn. The biggest reason I want it are the 2D Capcom fighters (the vs. series). Should I just get the Japanese console?

You don't necessarily need a Japanese console. There are very simple ways of getting around the region locks for the Saturn with either hardware or software. However, there are certain games that will only play in a Japanese Saturn, and some require the RAM cartridges.

@Shadow Kisuragi: I really only care about playing Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel vs. Street Fighter. Maybe Metal Slug.

@quake897:
X-Men vs. Street Fighter requires the 4MB RAM cartridge. They have RAM cartridges that can be used in NTSC Saturns.

@Shadow Kisuragi: Thanks for your help. I'm looking at buying a NTSC Saturn which comes with an Action Replay 4MB cartridge. Anything special I need to do to play NTSC-J games?

I'm pretty sure you can use the Action Replay.  The only other alternative I am aware of requires the installation of a DPDT switch which allows you to switch between NA and JP games.
