Posted under Site News, Thanks, Submissions

RF Generation would be nowhere without its members and staff. Your submissions and additions are what help make the database grow. As such, I want to thank those who really  helped make the database grow this month.

First off, I'd like to thank Belgarath for being the top submitter for May. His 446 submissions made him the top submitter, and we are grateful for his hard work. The next largest submitters all with over 50 submissions, in order, are Tan, Funk_Buddy, BadKarma,  Dreamcaster, Fuyukaze, Speedy_NES, Samada, Tynstar, Rajaat the Warbringer, NES_Rules, and marriott_guy. Thank you all for your dedication last month, and we hope that you guys will continue making our database better this month.

Other statistics that you may find fun is that for May we had 1247 image additions, 768 game additions, and 371 games edits. Our hardware database, on the other hand, had a whopping 76 submissions, which relative to the games total submissions of 2388 submissions is lacking. So, here is my challenge for you -- make the hardware database grow this month, and make it significant. Good luck meeting that goal.

Thanks to all those who helped the database grow, including those not mentioned. Your dedication and hardwork help make this site a better place for all.

I suppose I don't need an image in this post for you to figure out that something is different. Three months ago, a decision was made to begin the process of redesigning the site. This site would be cleaned up greatly and it would also be using Cascading Style Sheets, something that the previous site sorely needed. Today, June 8, is an important date. Three years ago today RF Generation went live, and today, June 8, 2007, we launch our new site design. Clearly, this may take some time for you to get used to if you really, really enjoyed the old design, but we feel that the new design is cleaner, more professional, and more structured than the old site. It also has some new features that the old site just didn't have. Let's look into those:

First, we have a new front page script. It's really complex, and I guess you could call it a blog. As with most blogs registered members of this site are able to comment to any posts made to the blog, via a comment box on the article's page. Additionally, if you would like to be able to keep track of news or any other topic on the blog you are able to subscribe to that tag and get a lovely RSS feed of that. This new front page design is the reason why we promoted Tan to Front Page Editor, and I know that he'll do a damn good job with the front page. Of course, a good front page editor needs a few good writers, so if you are interested in writing for the blog please let Tan or I know. We are grateful for Tan's willingness to shape the blog, and with his knowledge and leadership I am certain that the blog will flourish.

Secondly, we have some new sections. At the top, there is an about section, where you can find out about the site or its staff, and you can also get some cool promotional images. I should mention that if you are a registered member and you also have a collection you should probably check out the "Promote" page. We also have a home for our weekly features, which can be found in the "Features" section (big surprise there). Lastly, we have the tools section, which for right now are the collection tools. It is rather likely that some day way down the road there will be more tools on this site, stay tuned for that.

I'd like to make the point that during this redesign there has been no removal in functionality of the site, save for System Checklists, which will hopefully make its triumphant return in the not too distant future. Aside from checklists, you should be able to find everything still somewhere on the site.

This project would not have been possible without assistance from many other people, and I'd like to thank Eddie Herrmann (St0rmTK421), Dennis Gruchala (den68), Keith Brown (Tan), Ken Wozetek (Mezmoron), and Scott Williams (Tynstar) for their assistance in addition to the members who unknowingly helped test the commenting system.  If I missed thanking you please know that while I missed mentioning your name I am ever grateful for your assistance.

As always stay tuned to RF Generation, there will always be more to follow when you keep it tuned to channel 3.

Posted under Site News, Weekly Features, Guitar Hero, I Wanna Rock

This week is a special week. On Friday, we have the three year anniversary of when the site went public. We may or may not have something fun planned for that day, but such banter is for another time an place. Right now though, we talk of features.

There is one game series that just seems to be talked about more often than any other on this site. Guitar Hero and its later incarnations have a special place in the hearts of many RF Generation members, and to celebrate our affinity for the game this week is 'Feature Everything Guitar Hero Related' week. Unfortuately, none of you have uploaded hardware shots of one of the guitars for the game, so I threw a Sony model 2 PS2 in there as the featured hardware, you really can't play the featured game, Guitar Hero II for the Sony PS2, without it. Oddly enough, the featured image is the box front image for the 360 version of Guitar Hero II. Surprising, no? Lastly, we've got a featured collection, which for this week is that of our resident graphic artist den68. He's an avid fan of Guitar Hero.

But, that isn't the only reason to feature den's collection. As I write this post, his collection has an astounding 3997 games listed under it. I've also been told by den that he has many more games to add, which will definitely place him over the 4000 game mark. That is a momentous milestone, and it also means that den68 is still king in the total games department. Congrats den, and may the gaming gods smile upon you.

From all of us at RF Generation stay tuned, you never know when more is to follow.

Three yearsââ"¬Â¦. three years ago to the day RF Generation was founded by a wonderful group of people, and today we celebrate the fact. What started as a site for a small group of collectors has grown into something so much larger. I donââ"¬â"¢t think anyone would have fathomed when the site was founded that it would have grown as much as it has up to this day. We could not have done it would you, our readers, members, and staff, and for that we are truly grateful.

In the last year, weââ"¬â"¢ve seen many new and exciting additions to the site. From big things like the submissions system, hardware database and new forums to small things such as additions that you, our readers and members, ask for, the last year has surely seen lots of changes to the site. The outlook for the rest of 2007 is no different, with the biggest project currently cooking being the site redesign. A few of you know what it will look like, and to be honest, we think it looks pretty darn good. Stay tuned for that project and many more, youââ"¬â"¢ll certainly here about them more as they come closer to fruition.

You may be wondering if we are doing anything to celebrate the third anniversary of our founding. The answer to that of course, is yes. Today we launch the ââ"¬Å"Show Us You Love RF Generation!ââ"¬Â contest. Winning of course could land you some nice swag.

Join the celebration, and keep it tuned to channel three!

This is a friendly reminder, after yesterday's abysmal chat turn out, that every Monday at 8:00 PM EDT we have RF Generation Chat hosted by the one and only shaggy. There we talk about what ever we feel like, and it tends to be a lot of fun. Of course, you can not join in on the fun unless you are there, so be there or be square every Monday for RFG Chat.

Additionally, to eliminate any confusion, I would also like to point out that you can join the chat 24/7 provided that you are a registered member. Even if no one is in there a single person in chat tends to act as a seed, so don't be afraid of the chat.

See you in the chat!

Today I'd like to congratulate Tan on all the awesome work that he does. Tan is number one in submissions not by just a bit, but is such a hard worker that he has almost doubled the number two submitter. His, and your, submissions are not unnoticed, and we appreciate all of your hard work.

Times are changing yet again around here with this site redesign, and as it gets closer and closer to completion we need to make some changes. See, we have this nice new front page and news script that is going to grace the site, and I want someone to be the caretaker of the front page. I'd like the front page to be a true gateway and a place people will want to visit consistently, and for that reason I need someone who will focus on achieving that goal. For this reason, the directors of this site have decided to promote Tan to Front Page Editor. It will be his job to ensure that this goal is met. There are a lot of cool features that will be implemented into the front page, and he will, along with other staff members, work to ensure that these features are well used and make a desirable front page for people to see and visit.

Congrats to Tan! May our front page flourish!

Posted under Site News, April Fools

Yes, it was an April fools joke, just like my personal favorite April Fools joke, Pretty Generation, where everyone was pretty as a posy. What a beautiful time that was.

For those of you who did not see the April fools joke, you can find Toddler Generation here. You can also find the posts of April Fools in the the April Fools category of the forum. This won't be a permanent category, and will likely be decommissioned in a week or two. So get to seeing those posts if you haven't seen them yet.

Luckily for you guys, unlike the previous two years the site remained fully functional today save for the hideous color pallette that was Toddler Generation. As such, any changes you made to your collection on April 1 will remain them, and any submissions made also still exist. I'd like to thank our resident graphic artist den68 and our Database Director Eddie Herrmann with assisting me with the joke, this would have been much harder without them.

For those of you who wonder about the previous April Fools jokes of the site, here is a list of them in chronological order:

As you can see, this is a reoccurring theme here at RF Generation, so you can expect to see another one of these jokes come again next year. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Having said that, we have a lot of things cooking at RF Generation. Our third birthday is coming up, and you can expect to see some contest and birthday bash in 4 weeks. Also, we've began the extremely arduous process in cleaning up the site and making it use CSS tags. I guess you could call it a site redesign. Don't expect to see the new site rolling out in the near future, but I thought that perhaps you might like to know what's cooking at RF Generation. As that gets closer to fruition I am sure more will be said about that project.

As always stay tuned to RF Generation. More is certainly going to follow when you keep it tuned to channel three.

I'd like to apologize for the slowness seen on the site this weekend. I do not know if it was necessarily our fault, but I have made some steps to ensure that our load on the mySQL server is decreased. Hopefully these improvements will allow for the increased responsiveness of the mySQL server, and subsequently our site.

Sincerely,
David Murnan
Site Director, RF Generation.com

Here is something for you all that not even the staff knew about. Want to pimp your collection stats in an easy, banner sized image? Here you go! This image generates in real time your collection stats for the games database. To get your stats up here is the general link:

http://www.rfgeneration.c...collectionstats;user=USER

Your stats will show up when you replace USER with your forum username. It may also be advantageous to save this as a separate image, as the loading speed is at the mercy of the mySQL server.

Enjoy!

After countless hours of programming and optimizations tonight RF Generation releases the submission system version 3.0, which you can find here. You may be wondering what this submission system allows you to do, well, here is the short list of new features:

  • Ability to add Alternate Titles
  • Ability to add Countries to a game, if it was not a region wide release
  • Ability to add a game ratings and rating descriptors, such as for the ESRB
  • Streamlined Media Formats
  • More forgiving submission search scripts
  • Ability to search by country in the advanced search
  • Ability to see all the new features on the game and hardware pages
  • Lots of backend improvements

We hope that these improvements and new features further solidify our place in the internet as one of the premier games databases and collection tools. I'd like to thank everyone on staff for helping to debug the scripts as well as the donors for unknowingly debugging the system as well. Hopefully their assistance will keep the occurrence of bugs to a minimum, however, if bugs do pop up please let me know, so I can quash them as quickly as possible.

From all of us at RF Generation, thank you for keeping it tuned to channel three, and we hope that you continue to keep it tuned in for years to come.

Today is a momentous occasion for RF Generation, as today is the day that we hit 1000 members! We are quite humbled to have reached this milestone in under three years of operation. We hope you enjoy the community we've got going here, certainly we here on staff do. Are you not a member yet? Feel free to join by clicking here! All the cool kids are doing it!

You might be wondering who the lucky 1000th member is. The answer to that question is Yurf! Congratulations on being the 1000th member! We hope you enjoy the collection tools and community as much as everyone else does!

Also, since today is Monday, we have a new set of features for you to enjoy! Our featured game this week is the decidedly different Mario Paint. Is it a good game, or is it something to be passed on? Be sure to check out Mezmoron's opinion on the game. Our featured collection belongs to nupoile! Primarily an NES collection, nupoile also has such treasures as a Vectrex, Odyssey^2, and an Atari 5200! Be sure to check his collection out. Rounding out the features are the featured hardware, the Memory Card 251 [Pokemon Box Red-Blue], and image, of front cover of the box for Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball Max'd. Special thanks goes out to Mezmoron for getting those features up with his very busy schedule.

From all of us here at RF Generation, thank you for helping us get to this milestone. We couldn't have done it without you, and we hope that you decide to keep it tuned to channel 3. Stay tuned, more is always to follow when you put it on channel three. See you in the chat!

It's hard to believe. One year has passed since RF Generation lost its webmaster and co-founder, Michael Collins. In that year, we've had the time to cope, adjust, and move on, but I am sure I am not alone when I say that I miss Mike. I grieved, like many people grieved, and it still sucks to this day that Mike is gone. Mike touched the lives of many, and the community lost someone special when he passed away. Without Mike there may very well never had been this website. This website, its content, values, and community, are a reflection of who Mike was. It's special knowing that fact.

You may have never known Mike, or perhaps you were one of his good friends. Regardless of who you are, we hope that you will never forget that Mike was not only one of the driving reasons behind this site, but also a friend to many and one of the nicest leaders you could ever meet. Mike had this crazy idea when he founded the site that "No one should be forgotten". Well, if that is such a crazy idea then mark me insane. No one here should ever be forgotten, especially someone as wonderful of a human being as Mike. We will never forget you Mike, and we hope that neither will you, the members of our wonderful little community on the internet.

Mike touched the lives of many. Knowing this and what a wonderful person Mike was today we launch our memorial of Mike. Mike may be gone, but he is certainly not forgotten. We hope that on this day you will take the time to read a bit about why Mike was such a wonderful person to many. Perhaps you would like to contribute to our memorial through your own memories or reflections, and if so we encourage it. We hope though that you will take the time though to at least get a glimpse of who Mike was and why he was a friend to many.

Today RF Generation pauses to remember a friend who has passed on. Mike, you are gone, but you certainly are not forgotten.
