If you play Super Nintendo games you know what to expect. A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy III are fantastic games, which many of us hold close to our hearts. Perhaps these were games you played as a kid or during your teens, but you at least have the satisfaction of knowing that you've experienced these essential pieces of gaming history. What we played in North America is only the tip of the iceberg though. There are so many great role playing games that we never got to see because they never left Japan. Here are five games that, thanks to translators and/or repro developers, we can finally add to our backlogs.

During October you made a total of 2380 submissions to the ever growing database. Of those updates 45 were hardware submissions and 2335 were game submissions. And you kept those scanners buzzing with 1163 image submissions.
Our top contributors last month were: ericeskapade (596), Shadow Kisuragi (257), Flee (206), ae.tc (197), and CoinCollector (169)
On behalf of the RF Generation staff and community we thank you for your incredible efforts.
Our top approvers were: Shadow Kisuragi (1256), ApolloBoy (205), and Tynstar (88)
I recently started playing Far Cry 3 to see what all the hype surrounding the game was about. The game took some getting used to, since the first-person shooter genre is still very new to me, but there's one mechanic in this game that I'm very familiar with, the skill tree. However, I this mechanic wasn't the right choice for this particular game.

After a month-long fight through the night exploring Dracula's castle, we have arrived at a new frontier. Join RF Generation in an outer space sci-fi Community Playthrough in November. This time we invite you to play the Super Nintendo classic, Super Metroid and the cult PC hit, System Shock 2.
A young Metroid specimen has been kidnapped from the Galactic Federation science colony by Ridley and his Space Pirates! Battle through the caverns of Zebes again to recover the Metroid from the rebuilt Space Pirate facility. Another amazing title to tackle this month, so please join us for Super Metroid on the SNES in the Retro Community Playthrough.

Board the Von Braun Space Station in 2114 to battle wits with Shodan, a rogue A.I., in the spiritual prequel to BioShock. System Shock 2 is a tough as nails PC only game released in 1999, just over the verge to be considered modern. This Ken Levine cult classic is heralded as being way ahead of its time, and you'll be shocked at just how deep and complex of a game it is. So join the Modern Playthrough Group this November for their playthrough of System Shock 2

I'm facing a dilemma, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Digitally distributed games are saturating the market, and as a collector, I feel a little strange.

Lately the Community Playthroughs have allowed us to play a handful of incredible games. Coming right off of Ico I'm facing the question of how video games use or misuse narrative.
Whether used well or not, a game's narrative pulls in and ties together the experience the game is attempting to illicit for the player. Just like the laces on a pair of shoes, you can haphazardly tie them into a knot, but you may look a little odd and your shoes might fall off your feet. Without a story, a game can't effectively gel with the player, which at worst, results in a game left unfinished. Sometimes tight, solid gameplay can't redeem a game with a lackluster story. The narrative of a game serves a key role -- it is the foundation that the game's motifs and objective(s) rest upon.

I'll often step away from the grand scale RPGs I normally play to indulge in bite sized gaming experiences I can finish in a few hours. These shorter titles are ones that have fun gameplay or offer small nuggets of great stories. Kentucky Route Zero by Cardboard Computer falls into this second category

Game developers and journalists descended upon Cologne, Germany for another Gamescom Conference. This event is similar to E3, but the spotlight is placed on upcoming games. This year, Microsoft, Sony and EA (which I was unable to watch due to their 4 a.m. EST stage time) highlighted their future line ups of games. Backlogs and wallets beware, there is a lot to be excited about just over the horizon.

There's a current trend in the video games scene to abandon the strict conditions synonymous with large-scale major name development studios in favor of smaller teams that focus on projects they are highly passionate about. This one of the major shifts that's currently changing the way we look at RPGs.
Once role playing games were associated with developers like Square, Atlus, or BioWare, but now smaller teams, some the size of a household family, are making names for themselves. They are the new trailblazers who are defying today's RPG status quo. They are the passionate creators who work on projects that are labours of love. Whether the game is the result of artistic expression or love of the bygone golden era of RPGs, these new names in the gaming market are generating a lot of buzz.

How has the summer been treating everyone? Sure, you can head to the beach and work on your tans, but why not join your friends here at RF Generation for some quality gaming?
Last month we had the special honour to play Suikoden on the PSX and Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2. All of the Playthrough hosts want to thank all of the participants to playing and completing two very heavy games.
July's retro side sees the RPG train steadily rolling on with the essential, and classic gamer favourite, Chrono Trigger. Considering the various platform supporting this game, how could we avoid this masterpiece?
Over on modern generation, if you're tired of the same old traditional gameplay and are looking for something that defies genre placement, then this month's Modern Community Playthrough is for you! We'll start off on our creative foot with an ongoing multiplayer experience in Minecraft where you can build anything you want on your own or with other RFGeneration members throughout the month, or just try to survive. Week 2 will be a mysterious game called Gone Home from The Fullbright Company. In week 3 we'll tackle the hilarious puzzle(?) game, The Stanley Parable. Dear Esther will finish it off, a very poetic and moving story told through a video game. Enjoy all these PC/Mac indie titles with the community this July!
There you have it! Classic JRPG greatness and current Indie Game hits. See you all in the discussions.

April database submissions bring May congratulations!
Last month you guys made a total of 3279 updates to RF Generation's database which comprised of 3154 game submissions and 125 hardware submissions.
It's also clear how much RF Gen members love pictures because 769 images were added to our database.
In April six members surpassed 100 submissions. ae.tc made 284 database entries and Raidou contributed 111 additions. The other four to add over 100 submissions were staff members: ApolloBoy (966), Shadow Kisuragi (540), Flee (440), and CoinCollector (176). Honorable mentions last month go to Sauza12 with 93 entries and Zagnorch with 92 entries. Way to go!

It's that time again! Time for another exciting Community Playthrough!
April was a great month full of good old Atari fun courtesy our resident Atari historian singlebanana. Likewise, exploring the magical planets of Magical Starsign was a treat and we want to thank you for joining us on that intergalactic rump. We'd like to thank everyone for their participation and congratulate the Atari Activision Champion who can be found in the thread here.
Last month's games have left us feeling a little bananas so it should come as no surprise that we invite you to join your fellow RF Gentlemen in playing an apish SNES classic and a hidden gem for the Wii.
Hold onto your barrels in this month's Retro Community Playthrough as we work to recover our stolen hoard of bananas from the evil King K. Rool and his Kremling Krew in Donkey Kong Country on SNES. After that it's onto the sequel, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest. Donkey Kong has been captured by Kaptain K. Rool and it's up to Diddy Kong and his girlfriend Dixie Kong to rescue him and keep the banana hoard safe.
Your shadow has been severed from your body and the only way to get it back is to climb to the top of a mysterious tower. Manipulate light, solve puzzles, and overcome enemies in your quest to reunite with your body in Lost in Shadow for the Nintendo Wii.
