The SG-1000 II was released in July 1984 as a revision of the original SG-1000, Sega's first game console. Although the internal hardware remained largely unchanged, the expansion port was relocated to the front of the system and the hardwired controller for the first player was replaced with a controller port. The system was also packed in with two Famicom-style control pads, which plugged into the rear of the console and could snap onto the sides of the console for storage.
Being a cosmetic redesign, the SG-1000 II was compatible with all SG-1000 games and accessories such as the Card Catcher and SK-1100 keyboard. The SG-1000 II was produced until late 1985 when it was replaced by the Mark III.

Trivia
Two hardware revisions of the SG-1000 II exist; the first model has a discrete TMS9918 VDP and SN76489A sound chip, while the second model has both chips combined into a custom chip (the Sega 315-5066) and can be modified for RGB output.
