The Hori Mini Pad is a considerably smaller controller that swaps Nintendo's optical encoder-based analogue stick for a "GameCube-style" joystick that utilizes potentiometers. Similar to the ASCII Pad 64, Hudson Joycard 64, and Hori Commander, the Hori Mini Pad was licensed by Nintendo. These Japanese-produced licensed controllers can share the same buttons as Nintendo-produced Nintendo 64 controllers, but due to differing form factors or functionality, some of these parts are unique to these licensed controllers. For the Hori Mini Pad, the B and C buttons, aside from C-Left, are all compatible with official Nintendo controllers. Everything else is incompatible, including the GameCube-style joystick. The joystick uses potentiometers instead of optical encoders and is soldered to a smaller PCB that attaches to the main controller PCB through a small ribbon cabble. The controller was likely produced by Nintendo in one of their Japanese factories because it was made in Japan like earlier Nintendo 64 controllers and features the same quality of plastic and coloration as official Nintendo-produced controllers.
