Hello all!
Welcome to the first community viewing of Game Center CX, also known as Retro Game Master here in the US. If you're unfamiliar with the series, it typically involves a segment where the show's host Arino (member of the comedy duo Yoiko) attempts to conquer a retro video game, as well as other segments including Game Center (Arcade) visits, interviews with industry leaders, and overviews of Japanese games, among other things.
Recently, Kotaku has started airing translated episodes of Retro Game Master on its website, but without all of the nice segments that come along with it. As such, I'm inviting all of RFGeneration to participate in a weekly viewing of the original Game Center CX episodes, complete with fansubs.
Unfortunately, for the first season, finding complete episodes for Game Center CX will be tough as most people have mirrored the original subtitle effort, which only focused on the challenges for the first season. For now, I'll post up Arino's Challenge for this episode. The missing segment for this video focuses on him attempting to track down the developers for this game and discussing how it came to be.
Post any comments or feedback on the episode below for discussion.
Title: Takeshi no Chousenjou

Wow what a crappy ending lol

Yeah, Kotaku cut out all the best parts. And didn't even translate some things, like the intermissions. I've seen most of the episodes so I encourage everyone to watch this show! You'll laugh, you'll cry (at his mistakes) and most importantly, you'll enjoy it.

I LOVE this series. I've seen most of the first season, as well as the Transformers challenge. Funny thing is, I never realized there was anything outside of the challenges! With the added segments it's like I get to enjoy them all over again.
What made it for me was not only the crappy games, but the constant laughing from the crew as Arino fails over and over and...
|
That was a pretty terrible-looking game. I enjoyed the video though!

Arino's quotes are always priceless.
The best part of all of these episodes is that Arino's typically experiencing the game for the first time. The reactions aren't scripted, and since he's more of a casual gamer, I get to enjoy seeing how differently he reacts to all of the different situations.
Best comments in this video (paraphrased): "After writing this strategy guide, he [the author] died." "We received 400 complaints a day when it was first released. Each call lasted about 1 minute."
How bad must documenting and playing the game have been if he died in order to escape it? Also, I can imagine how those calls must've gone:
"Hello. Are you calling about Takeshi's Challenge?" "Yes. Your guide is worthless. How do I get past [XXX]?"
To steal a quote from Family Guy: "You don't win. You just do a little better each time."

For those interested, I plan on making this into a weekly segment. The more people that participate, the more interesting the discussion becomes.

My favorite part was when he had to let the game sit for an hour and decided to see what would happen if he pushed something. Kareoke x 2!!!

Yeah I haven't been able to find the full episodes for many of the real first season of GC CX for a year or so. All that can be found is that. Thankfully the episodes for the seasons afterwards are intact from the subbers.
|
@SirPsycho: Well then, sir, I guess I need to import the DVDs.
|
I found this site recently, they have a lot of GCX episodes online: http://www.vgmastersclub.com/version2/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=28&Itemid=151
Much better quality than those I found on youtube :-)

@aragon: Same videos on YouTube, just rehosted.

Poor Arino. I've watched a few of these before, and he is so good natured about the torture. How could anyone have figured that game out without that guide???
|
Hee heeee... the dude played Vic Romano's stream-of-consciousness nightmare for five hours, and was rewarded by being chastised for taking the game seriously. Kudos to "Beat" Takeshi for channeling the spirit of Andy Kaufman with this epic IRL troll job. Sortuva proto-Rick-Roll, really.
And kudos to Arino for taking it pretty well. If there's an anti-AVGN, he's it.
I also dug the 6:20 mark, a literal example of a "boss battle." Hey, who hasn't had the desire to pop a supervisor in the back of his stupid thick skull a few times before starting the work day? Oh yeah, right, I'm the only one? Buncha fibbers...
A little disturbing was the 6:45 mark, where he laid the beat-down on a chick in the karaoke bar. Heh, get it? "Beat"-down? You know, because this game was conceived by-- ahhhh, bite me, ya humorless lamers...
It's a shame that they couldn't get Mr. Kitano himself to be a part of this episode. Now that woulda been epically mind-blowing. Or mind-blowingly epic. Or a blow to the epic mind. Whichever suits your fancy...
|
I wish Takeshi would've made a Takeshi's Castle Famicom game. That would've been epic.

These videos are gold! That crazy Japanese humor.
|
I started with season 2 (unknowingly), but these are great!
