Another list of movies I've seen in the last 2 weeks or so.

Dead Poets Society - (1989) - B+
--> Great movie, though I question the likelyhood of Williams personage to exist at a boarding school in the 1950ies.

V for Vendetta - (2006) - B+
--> Interesting movie, leaves something to think about. It is quite stylized. Hugo Weaving steals the show.

Rat Race - (2001) - C
--> Typical mindless comedy, not much to say. Lots of big name actors in this movie, though. Has enough gaffes and jokes to keep you entertained.

Rabbit Hole - (2010) - B+
--> Succesful portrayal of a couple dealing with the recent death of their young child.

Good Will Hunting - (1997) - A
--> I had not yet seen this movie, yet I thought I did. The main premise of this movie is perhaps a bit far-fetched, but everything is kept believable.

Tulpan - (2008) - A-
--> Seeing the desolate Kazakhstan steppe is reason enough to watch this movie. It's amazing to think how people live in that environment, and how they do so. The story itself is secondary to the environment and ends relatively abruptly. I recommend this movie to anyone wishing to see something different.

Shanghai Knights - (2003) - B
--> Second viewing, always fun to watch.

True Grit - (2010) - A+
--> All movies should be this good.

Yours, Mine and Ours - (2005) - C-
--> Weak romcom movie with a predictable plot. Ok if you have nothing better to do but otherwise skip this one.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets - (2007) - B
--> I enjoyed it. Some of the plot twists are hard to believe, but that's half the fun in a movie like this.

The Invention of Lying - (2009) - C
--> They should have taken this otherwise original concept a lot further.

Started watching (on Crabmaster's recommendation) the Anime, Attack On Titan. Two episodes in. I really like it.

I had 10 episodes in my DVR I had to catch up on after finishing the Ghost in the Shell I had saved. I started watching that night around 9 p.m., I watched all of them by the time I went to bed. The series is one of my favorites so far.

Sword Art Online is also very awesome and is video game related in the best ways possible storywise.

Particle Fever - hooray they made the Higgs Boson by slamming things into each other in a giant circle.

Easter Island: Mysteries of a Lost World

NOVA: Ground Zero Supertower - Making the memorial/museum/replacement tower.

NOVA: Asteroid: Doomsday or Payday? - LETS HARVEST ASTEROIDS! We can just slowly drag them into orbit around the earth. What could possibly go wrong?

Nova: Ultimate Mars Challenge - How they tested and eventually landed the super huge mars rover safely.

Nova: Megastorm Aftermath - About Superstorm Sandy.

Mystery Files: Hitler - Smithsonian Channel program that details what they think happened in WW1 to make Hitler a badman in WW2

Nova: Decoding Neanderthals - Everyone is part neanderthal. Some more than others(Mostly northern/western European descent.)

Secrets of the Dead: Caveman Cold Case - Neanderthal was killed in Spain 49,000 years ago. They made a special about it. With any luck in 49,000 years someone will dig you up and make a show about you.

Tesla: Master of Lightning

National Geographic: The Human Family Tree

Nazi Mega Weapons - miniseries(?) I think it was 6 eps. There was some pretty awesome stuff i hadn't heard of before. Like the super bunker in Berlin, and the super gun/artillery(think French Super Weapon in C&C), and the tank that was essentially the size of a Brownstone

Nova: Rise of the Drones - Yay technology moving faster than outdated laws can keep up with!

The Avengers - "Loki is my brother." He killed a bunch of people.... "Half brother" I love Marvel movies. On the whole i think "Puny god" was my favorite comedic line and "My secret is I'm always angry" was my favorite serious line.

Hellboy - How can you not like Ron Perlman? Saw this when it came out. Never saw the sequel. Don't think it is on Netflix either.

Small Soldiers - Such a goofy movie. Almost was going to suggest watching it with my son. Glad i didn't it was more "grown up" than i remembered it being.

Weird or What? - Pretty sure i watched season 1 awhile back. Season 2 and 3 are hosted by Shatner. It is decent. The formula for every episode seems to be: Strange event, crazy explanation person, person who doesn't agree with crazy explanation: uses logic, person who doesn't agree with crazy explanation: offers even crazier explanation.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey - The new one with deGrasse. If memory serves i tried to watch the one Sagan did and just couldn't get into it. My son has actually seen more of these than i have but we've been rewatching them together.

Dark Secrets - BS scenarios and conspiracy theories. The best part is it is full of interviews with people who were there. And yet those people are generally 20+ years younger than they could be given the time lines. Towards the end of the series they started getting more age appropriate people at least.

Dark Space - Spring Break in the future. + crash landing on an "uninhabited" planet + military death squads = Don't let the super low star rating fool you. It is a decent flick.

The Machine - don't let the super high star rating fool you. Britain is never going to acquire a super human-esque AI first in a futuristic Cold War scenario.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks - meh

Evacuate Earth - How humanity might escape earth if we discovered we only had 75 years before a free roaming star decided to smash into our solar system. Even though it tries to be super sciencey it still requires a massive amount of suspension of disbelief. Like the 75 year counter that is both the deadline for the star killing everything. But so long as the space "ship" is ready by then everything will be cool.

Did God Create The Universe? - Fell asleep watching this again. Hawking "talking" about god and science.

Red vs. Blue - About 2/3 of the way through season 5 now. Hilarious.

I've been watching a dumb TV show called The League. They advertised the piss out of it during The Simpsons marathon so when I saw it on Netflix I figured I'd give it a shot. I loved it. I ended up plowing through the first two seasons over the weekend and I'm about halfway through the third. Good for fans of low-brow irreverence.

Watched Kick Ass 2 tonight with my wife.

I am not sure what to think. Certainly more over the top than the first, and still nowhere near the severity of the comics, and yet, there were parts that I felt had no place on film. I guess it really is true that not every comic book or novel will translate on film. ha ha

Surviving Progress - Documentary about how humanity is destroying everything through the constant forward march of what we consider progress. Mostly gross excess. Unfortunately even if everyone rationed due to the ever increasing population we are doomed anyways. Too many people not enough replenishable resources.

Goodbye World - The grid goes down across the US (doesn't specify if world wide)and this movie follows a small group of pretty diverse "friends" in Cali surviving in the days/weeks after.

13 Sins - Sadistic "game" comprised of 13 challenges. Run by the hidden ultra elite of society. Game apparently always starts the same and ends 1 of 2 ways.

The Ghost Army - Documentary about a WW2 division who used loud speakers and rubber inflatable tanks/halftracks/planes to trick nazis into believing the number of troops were far greater or location of troops were far different from what they actually were. They were highly successful too!

Hawking - Biography of Stephen Hawking. Super interesting. I think my favorite bits were about all his pop culture cameos tho...

The Devil's Bible - "Documentary" "investigating" the Codex Gigas. Some sleuthing was done but much of it just seemed like quick work and sweeping generalizations due to limited research time frame.

Human Lampshade: A Holocaust Mystery - This was one i surprisingly had not heard of before. Overall not that interesting. Save you 60-90 minutes. Many of the parts match WW2 era(more or less) production from germany. But the lamp was made from cowhide. The jew who owned it seemed very disappointed. He ruined the show. Seemed like he was going out of his way to play to the camera and get sensational results.

Forgiving Dr. Mengele - Old Jewish twin talking about how she freed herself of the feeling of being a victim by forgiving those involved in the torture and killing of jews. Ironically when visiting Israel she seemed to view of all arabs/mulsims with the same attitude i would expect germans had towards jews in the 30s

Secrets of Scotland Yard - Started illegally originally the cops could not investigate any potential wrong doings and could only attempt to stop crime as it was happening. After an attempted assassination of the queen they were able to pass legislation to make detective work legal. Lots of other stuff was covered too. Pretty interesting stuff on the whole. The much more modern jewel heist they mentioned was most interesting though.

Death by China - All the ways China is destroying the global market (this focused only on US though) and economy of the US and how "american" companies have helped that. Primarily by moving all their jobs over seas. They rattled off a huge list of items that the US doesn't make any more and can only get via import from China. All things considered it was mostly about how consumers always want the cheapest they can get not realizing it has eliminated massive job sectors in the US which have in turn started wrecking havoc on other sectors, and how corporations want to maximize their profits at all costs.

Drugs Inc - Season 2 and 3. I think this is/was a Nat Geo series. Each episode they show things from the views of various people involved in some way with that drug. Cops/paramedics, dealers, users, parents/families. Some of it is pretty crazy.

Bottled Life - Nestle is a bad bad company. Anyone who buys water is a sucker anyways. Poland Springs water for example. I believe this said Nestle is able to take ~20$s(or less) worth of water from Maine and rebottle it for ~60k$ MSRP.

The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden - Documentary. A husband and wife tried to escape the civilized world. I wasn't paying full attention but i believe they first left for the Galapagos in the 20s/30s. Unfortunately for them it didn't work. Long story short a few people end up following them. People hate eachother. Murder happens.

Mission Blue - Another documentary. This one is a netflix original. Some famous ocean science lady going on about how we are destroying the oceans and their ecosystems. In turn destroying the rest of the world. They included an interview she did with Colbert which of course was priceless.

This one was surprisingly well made to me and the scenarios were very interesting. However I always find these kinds of movies to be kind of unbelievable from the aspect of "how far will the normal guy go?" It was cool though.

I watched a movie on Netflix called Alyce Kills yesterday. Supposed to be kind of a gory horror version of Alice in Wonderland with some social commentary on modern life but it is weak on both the commentary and the connections to AIW. However the lead actress did a great job portraying a good old fashioned descent into madness that left both my wife and I happy we watched it.

Ice Age: Continental Drift - (2012) - B
--> Decent animation movie. The pirates were fun, the rest of the cast is getting a bit boring.

GoldenEye - (1995) - B+
--> GoldenEye! Pierce Brosnan is the James Bond of my childhood and consequently feels like "The" James Bond to me.

Tomorrow Never Dies - (1997) - B
--> A bit sillier in parts than GoldenEye.

The World Is Not Enough - (1999) - B
--> About as good as Tommorow Never Dies. Probably even more unrealistic and goofy than Tomorrow Never Dies, but at this point I suspect them of going for just that. Especially the hot, young nuclear physicist has me rolling eyes every time.

The Three Investigators and the Secret of Terror Castle - (2009) - C-
--> Not only far too long a title for any serious movie, but this is mostly bad. I guess the environments and the castle, which isn't a castle but instead a country house, are nice. Most of the actors can't act, especally Jupiter.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World - (2010) - B
--> So cool and hip it kind of becomes stupid. I don't really like Scott's voice that makes him sound like a 9-year old.

Die Another Day - (2002) - C
--> This is rediculousness taken to a whole new level. It's unsurprising that Brosnan didn't do more Bonds after this. There's a point of stupid you can't come back from.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - (2000) - A
--> He's bona fide! Cracks me up every time.

Snow White and the Huntsman - (2012) - B+
--> Thought it was quite good but felt like it missed something that could've made it great. Not sure what though. Maybe it just needed more screen time.

Returning Lily - (2003) - B-
--> Decent acting for a movie that is probably a TV movie. The Hawaiian environments are nice.

Casino Royale - (2006) - A
--> Such a huge change of pace from the later goofy Brosnan pictures. Probably the best Bond film ever, in my opinion.

Lots of Bond for you lately. I agree with you about the Casino Royale. I was never a fan of the Brosnan films, and never seen any of the earlier Bonds with Connery or Moore, but Royale did feel different to me too.

I had a feeling early on there would be a second contestant. I was more certain about who one of the previous contestants was though.



Madness in the White City - All about H. H. Holmes. Americas "first" serial killer

Secrets of the Tower of London - Self explanatory more or less. The tradition of it is somewhat interesting and amusing. If i was a Brit it would probably be neither.

Secrets of the Dead: The Lost Diary of Dr. Livingstone - Needless to say when they get his personal diary discernible  it is significantly different from the doctored up articles meant for publication during his lifetime.

Mystery Files: Marco Polo - Spoiler alert. He didn't really exist.

Secrets of the Dead: World's Biggest Bomb - It amazes me sometimes the lengths we go through to destroy ourselves. They scientist in charge actually went against orders and made the bomb smaller than he could have because a blast any larger would have just wasted energy blasting out of the atmosphere and into space.

Dead in Tombstone - Trejo makes a deal with the devil to get his soul back. And get revenge. Trejo is a bad guy with a "good" heart.

Bunraku - Not really sure how to explain it. Excellent movie. Some big names in it too. My personal favorite in the bunch is Ron Perlman(how i found the movie) but Woody Harrelson is good too.

Truth or Die - If you go in expecting a bad horror movie you might get a bit of a surprise. Legitimately surprising twist at the end. But things don't exactly make sense. I guess it doesn't need to when it involves college(?) kids.

H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer - Not as good as the other one.

How Sherlock Changed the World - 2 part series Some pretty interesting stuff. Haven't finished yet

20 Feet Below - Trejo again. Takes place in the sewers. Trejo is the bad guy for real this time.

Oh yeah when i got around to finishing season 3 of Drugs Inc i was amused by the dealers from the UK.

Anywhere else in the world they will talk about how its kill or be killed and they sport glocks and aks and m16s and etc
UK the guy says "I can get swords, taser, pepper spray, a gun." So apparently if you want to rob a drug dealer do it in the UK because they are least likely to have a gun.
One guy had something like £50k worth of pot growing in his attic and said "If anyone tries to get in here i've got this" and reaches for a fucking sheathed decorative knock off samurai sword he probably bought at a fair.
