Once Upon a Time in America - (1984) - A
--> Great movie, enjoyed it a lot. The slower pace compared to today's movies is just great. Wikipedia says there's multiple versions of this movie. It was very long, so I must've seen one of the 200+ minutes versions. I can't believe the US release was 139 minutes! They cut out half the movie. What a joke.

Have you seen the 2010 Robin Hood? While not exactly a slower paced movie of old, it has way more of that feel than most other recent big movies. Ridley Scott directed, I'm sure that had to do with it. I really like how they spend time fleshing out secondary characters. It really adds to the movie. I just watched it, again, recently.


About long movies and multiple versions: generally I like the really long, directors cuts the best. I like long movies. Don't mind watching the Special Edition Return of the King, and all the credits....

Sometimes the shorter versions are better. My best example is Star Trek The Motion Picture. There are a few really long versions that just drag on, for a long time I didn't much care for this movie. A friend gave me a directors cut, which is about an hour shorter than some of the other cuts. So much better. Its actually a good movie.

I have seen that movie, but can't say I agree with you. I found it very mediocre. At 140 minutes, its length is closer to an standard 100-120 minutes movie than a long movie such as Once upon a time in America or Return of the King. There isn't that much character development, except for the obvious (and therefor a bit annoying) "blossoming romance" between Robin Hood and Marian. What really killed the movie for me though, was the rediculous looking and overacting King John. Plus the unrealistic act of Marian bravely showing up at the fight on the beach but of course needing to be rescued two seconds later. Either make the women strong (see: Kill Bill and Return of the King) or don't bother.

To me it felt like a thinly veiled superhero Hollywood movie with a historical backdrop. I guess it doesn't suffer from the continuous-explosions syndrome which does make it feel slightly less fast-paced than other movies in the genre. Once upon a time in America is a great movie though and Robin Hood certainly isn't.

I was mostly talking about Robin Hood within the confines of what the typical big budget movie of the last few years has been like. I wasn't actually comparing it straight up to Once Upon a Time in America or its like. 

The final scenes I both love and hate...its mostly ridiculous, which is were the 'love it' part comes in.

But I do think it has a bit of character development, all the extra scenes with friar Tuck showing what he was into and why he was on their side...great stuff. The little conversations Hoods team would have which didn't need to be there to further the story...this is what I was talking about, stuff I didn't see in Transformers 2.



I do have a 'problem,' I just like movies because they are movies. I give them lots of breaks.

I'm watching the new Whose Lines, they're so funny! This revival with a new host is just what the show needed.

As for myself: I decided to take a gander at the Modern Marvels episode on the A-10:

101 Dalmatians - (1961) - A
--> Classic movie, some hilarious scenes. One more down on my list of trying to see all Disney movies.

Lucky You - (2007) - B-
--> Not a bad movie at all. About a guy who's a 'professional' poker player and has a difficult relationship with his dad, who is the same. He bets on a lot of things. I liked the more technical scenes where they talk about certain hands, etc... The relationship with the girl was predictable.

Meet the Parents - (2000) - B
--> I can't believe this movie is 13 years old...

Toy Story 2 - (1999) - A+
--> My favorite scenes is where they enact the robbery and when the rescue party crosses the street. But really, all scenes are good.

Burn After Reading - (2008) - B+
--> It looks and plays as a typical thriller, but the story is completely random and a big joke. Makes for an entertaining movie though. I'm not surprised the Coen brothers made this. If you're talented enough, you can make a good movie out of the stupidest stories.

Nue Propriété - (2006) - B
--> Typical French/Belgian drama about a mother with grown-up twins who live in an old farmhouse. The mother wants to sell the house but the twins resist.

Rien à dèclarer - (2010) - B-
--> Comedy about Belgian and French custom officials who don't like each other.

The Shipping News - (2001) - B-
--> Movie about Kevin Spacey playing a bit of a loser who goes back to his roots in Newfoundland. Not really bad, but the story is missing something.


I'm also still watching The Sopranos. I've finished part 1 of season 6 and am now 4 episodes into part 2. It's a bit odd why they decided to make it into two parts instead of just adding a 7th season.

I'd been meaning to do so for a long time, but I finally watched all of the Archer episodes available. It's so damn good.

Before that, I re-watched "Better Off Ted" (I missed a day of work, so I had a lot of free time). This has to be one of the most underrated/under-appreciated TV shows of all-time.

I also went to see a bunch of movies in a relatively small window. I would rate them as follows:

1. The Conjuring (9/10):

Didn't expect this, but it was exactly what I needed. It's a very traditional horror movie, but with much, much better cinematography.

2. Pacific Rim (8/10):

Had just enough story to justify all of the special effects. Woke up the kid in me.

3. The Heat (7.5/10):

Not the best comedy I've seen, but it has a ton of one-liners and a few of them really hit hard. I had very low expectations heading in.
 
4. Red 2 (7/10):

It's exactly what you'd expect. I found myself needing to be distracted for a couple of hours after a long day at work and it fit the bill.

5. Wolverine (7/10):

I like that they didn't go too "grand" with the story. I actually thought the movie's scope was perfect. There was just a bit too much psychological drama in it.

6. World War Z (6/10):

Felt like it was going to be awesome (great concept), but the pacing for this movie is awful. It has a few moments of intensity but it has a greater bunch of slow-plodding scenes. It also felt incomplete, to me.

7. 2 Guns (5.5/10):

Generic as generic can be. The banter can sometimes be enjoyable, but that can only carry a movie so far. The only memorable thing about this movie is Paula Patton's "2 Guns".

the original from the 80s or the re-imagined series that started in 2003? i haven't seen the original but the re-imagined is amazing, watched every episode 3 or 4 times now. i'm currently going through it with a friend right now, up to season 3 too. season 3 finale is one of my favourite episodes.

The re-make. I was told it was great and I set my expectations pretty high, but it just blew them out of the water. It's just so well done. The acting is really quite good and the writing is great.
