Famicom and FDS should allow variation tie-ins.

Famicom and FDS should allow variation tie-ins.
They're not the same games - it would be the same as tying in Virtual Console to Nintendo NES.

If the only difference is language and sound, how is it any different than say Akumajou Densetsu and Castlevania III? Is media type the thing that defines it?

They're different systems, FDS games can't be played on a standard Famicom, so they can't be variations. Its the same with N64DD games. And its pretty much the same as games being released on PS3 and 360, the games are the same, but they're not variations.
You can always add FDS and Famicom counterparts as Related Games, which I know is slower to do, but its the correct way to go.
