I don't really like setting goals for myself, but these are some that I'd like to get, but I'm not really trying hard to get them all.
Reach 2,000 total games (I've only got 78 to go, so that's an easy one)
Reach 2,000 unique games (a little more challenging at around 500 to go)
Get down to 75 systems (I'm at 98, and need to get rid of some dupes)
Reach 350 unique NES games (about 100 to go)
Reach 200 unique SNES games (about 60 to go)
Reach 100 unique N64 games (easy one, with only 15 to go)
Reach 250 unique Genesis games (about 70 to go)
Reach 200 unique 2600 games (only 34 to go, but they're so hard to find anymore)
Once again, get rid of a lot of the duplicates.

My goals for 2009 are
Reach 100 PS2 games (still a goal from 2008, should be an easy one 12 more to go)
Reach 75 PS1 games
Reach 75 NES games
and get any CIB SNES Syetem
Got 100 PS2 games and Marvel vs Capcom 2 was My 100th!

After trying to decide on some realistic goals, here are mine:
1. Over 3000 unique games total by end of year.
2. Over 600 NES games.
3. Obtain some sort of Turbographx console.

I'm keeping things light this year. I'm just happy that I can actually afford to buy games this year. Here's what I'm gonna try to do.
1. Reach 200 NES games
2. Double my Turbografx collection (shouldn't be too hard since I've only got 5!)
3. Try to beat a few games this year
4. Expand my 7800 collection
5. See if I can get my Sega CD in working condition
I think I can handle these

YMMV. I regret getting a Dreamcast now. A couple decent games doesn't warrant keeping the system for me. I'll probably get rid of whatever I have left, I never play the damn thing.

If you want a Dreamcast, send me a PM, I've got several for sale, they're cheap too.

2009 - Get rid of whatever Dreamcast stuff I have left.
How's that?
Seriously though, I don't actually collect games as much as I play them. I treat all systems new or old the same way. I just buy whatever catches my eye for whatever system so I can play it. I set a hardware goal a couple years ago to buy backup hardware and accessories but that's it. I could no more set personal goals for gaming than I could guess the number of games for each system that I'll buy this year, because to me they are one and the same.

This year I want to seriously track down a Hello Kitty Dreamcast. I'd love to get a Japanese PS3 with PS1/PS2 BC, but I don't think I want to throw down the cash on one.

1. Get the cable I need to hook up my 7800
2. Hit 500 games(shouldn't be too hard I only need 20 more)
3. Not spend more than 40 a month on games
4. Get more shelving so I can display everything
5. Finish the work on my pinball machine

Pretty much the same as last year. I don't plan on completing most of them thats why i have so many
Maintain over 1000 games
Complete Game.Com (games)
Complete Pico (games not including Storyware Sampler)
Complete HyperScan (game discs not Trading Cards)
Complete US Mortal Kombat home console releases (including major variants)
Reach 200 PS2 games (same as 08)
Reach 150 Xbox games (the goal in 08 was 200)
Reach 50 Wii games (same as 08)
Obtain a 360.

-Get a Famicom, probably an AV model or a Twin
-Get a Model 2 NES

-
Maybe
get an Xbox 360
-Get another 2600
-Get copies of Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Super Metroid
-Get a TurboGrafx-16 **IMPORTANT**
-Build up to at least 200 unique 2600 games
-Get a Sega CD and 32X
-Get a Sega Master System
-Get a Japan Mega Drive
